Quiet neighborhood in Bowie, Maryland Continuous, low-level traffic noise is a pollutant that can cause health and motivational problems in children, researchers in the United States, Germany and Austria have found. The low but continuous noise of everyday local traffic can cause stress in children and raise blood pressure, heart rates and levels of stress hormones, reports a new study by a Cornell University environmental psychologist and his European co-authors. "We also found that girls exposed to the traffic noise become less motivated, presumably from the sense of helplessness that can develop from noise they couldn't control," says Gary Evans, an international expert on environmental stress, such as noise, crowding and air pollution. The study is the first to examine the nonauditory health effects of typical ambient community noise. The researchers analyzed data on 115 fourth graders in Austria with similar family characteristics, such as parent education, parental marital status, housing and family size.

Water Safety
Overview
Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under according to Cincinnati Children's Safe Kids Coalition , led by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. This is particularly tragic because 100 percent of these cases are preventable. Most accidental drownings and near drownings occur in residential swimming pools. However, children may drown in as little as one to two inches of water. These drownings frequently occur in bath tubs, buckets, toilets, diaper pails and wading pools. Adult supervision is critical in the prevention of drownings. Taking an eye off a child in the water for as little as two seconds puts a child at risk for drowning.

Window Falls
Wendy Pomerantz, MD Fact About Window Falls
Each year in the United States, 15 to 20 children under the age of 11 die, and nearly 15,000 are injured, because of falls from windows. Window falls tend to occur in low-income neighborhoods with deteriorating housing, unsatisfactory window construction and no air conditioning.
Children living in apartment buildings fall from windows at five times the rate of children living in other types of residences. The height of the fall, rate of the fall, force of impact and surface on which the child falls influence severity of injuries. The greater the height of the fall, the higher the death rate. Preventing Window Falls
As temperatures rise and parents open their windows, says Dr. Pomerantz. But there are steps parents can take to prevent windows falls:

  • Make sure no furniture that children can climb on is placed near windows.
