Welcome to the web page on Muslim contribution to humanity and Islamic Civilization. This page is dedicated to those Muslims whose multi-disciplinary contributions sparked the light of learning and productivity and without whom the European Renaissance would not have begun and come to maturity. Their contributions are rarely mentioned in formal education, and if at all mentioned their names are Latinized or changed with the effect of obscuring their identity and origin, and their association with the Islamic Civilization.

The Facts: Math students who are taught by a math major outperform their peers by one full grade level. Students in low-income areas who complete chemistry or algebra I and geometry are more than twice as likely to attend college than those who did not take these courses. (Source: US Dept. of Education, National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2000) Use your math and science skills to be part of the solution. Through Teach For America you will:
Nathan Boland
Southern Louisiana Corps, 2001
Colby College, Chemistry, 2001
Challenge: Nathan knew that for his chemistry students to be ready for college-level science classes, he would have give them opportunities for hands-on scientific experience that would put them on an equal footing with students from higher-income areas. Solution: Nathan worked with his former chemistry advisor at Colby College to obtain a $20,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. This grant funded a six-week exploratory geochemistry research summer program and New England college tour for two of his chemistry students from Baton Rouge. The students took part in ongoing research at Colby investigating the geochemistry of the Belgrade lakes watershed, and the summer program served as the launching point for the students’ senior-year advanced science courses. In the future, Nathan plans to use the program as a model for other partnerships between urban and rural high schools and four-year colleges and universities.

Institutional Requirements

Applications will be accepted from faculty members at public and private institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada. The principal investigator must have a faculty appointment in a department of astronomy, chemistry, or physics. A qualifying department must offer at least the baccalaureate, but not doctoral, degrees. The institutional environment and support for research are important considerations in evaluating the potential of the proposal.
Faculty Requirements Applications are accepted and encouraged from investigators at all stages of their professional careers. For both beginning and established faculty, program emphasis is on initiating an area of research. Proposals from established faculty beginning a new program of research are strongly encouraged. Proposals for funding to continue ongoing projects (those that have extended beyond "preliminary results") and requests for supplemental support of projects that have received support from other sources are not encouraged.

The National Doctoral Program Survey is an observational study, not a controlled experiment. Participants were self-selected, and as a result their responses may not fully reflect the opinions of the entire graduate student population. Despite the self-selection, there is important evidence that the concerns expressed represent widely held student opinions rather than a small but outspoken set of negative voices.
  • Our survey reached a broad cross section of the graduate student population. The demographics of the survey participants, after controlling for discipline, are similar to the demographics of graduate students and recent cohorts of Ph.D.s ( see below The vast majority of students expressed satisfaction with their programs (81%) and with their advisors (86%). Most would recommend their programs to others (80%). A pilot survey using similar methods, when compared to a survey conducted using more traditional methods, showed very similar findings. The

Vice President for Research and Information Services It's Not Just Employment/Unemployment Anymore Realities of Ph.D. labor market lead to more complex measures of postgraduation employment A trio of professional societies has recently released reports on the labor market status of new Ph.D. recipients in science and engineering. While providing the usual statistics on employment and unemployment, this new round of reports reveals the underlying complexity of the current science and engineering labor market. Ph.D.s are not just obtaining traditional jobs in academe, government or industry; they are finding employment in a wide variety of situations. Included in this mix is the postdoc, which is considered in some studies as employment, and in others treated as a separate category. The analyses conducted by the professional societies reflect this more fluid employment picture. American Institute of Physics One of the perennial leaders in collecting and disseminating data on physicists, the AIP has published its 1996 initial employment report on 1995 physics degree recipients. As shown in Figure 1 , AIP divides employment status into a number of useful categories, including postdocs, potentially permanent, and temporary positions. The change in employment status from the summer immediately following the receipt of the doctorate to the winter is striking the 19 percent seeking employment drops to a 4 percent unemployment rate, and the percentage with postdocs and potentially permanent positions increases. As expected, employment status for new Ph.D.s changes rapidly in the first six months following the doctorate.

    - Introduction:
The Jordanian Astronomical Society (JAS) - previously known as the Jordanian Amateur Astronomers Society - was founded in Amman in September 1987. It is temporarily located in Haya Cultural Center, we have about 50 active members in the Society. - Objectives of JAS:
    • Assembling amateur astronomers in Jordan and the Arab World, in order to develop their astronomical hobby through the exchange of astronomical data, information, articles, and observational expertise, as well as the provision of all what an amateur astronomer may need (e.g. astronomical equipment, periodicals, books, references, ... etc) - if possible.
    • Popularization of Astronomy, that is, spreading astronomical culture and awareness among all classes of the Community, and ascertaining the importance of astronomy and allied sciences in every-day life, and their inter-relationship with all fields of knowledge (such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, environmental sciences, technology, communications, ... and even philosophy !).
    • Transferring astronomy in Jordan and the Arab World from amateurism to professionalism, and from individual initiatives to institutional frames.

    Introduction
In 1994, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation invited distinguished chemists and chemical engineers to a conference exploring the impact of chemistry on the environment. Based on the presentations and discussions at that meeting, the Foundation initiated the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry. First awards were made in 1996. The program invites experts in environmental science to submit proposals for the training of Ph.D. chemists and chemical engineers in research activities related to chemistry and the environment. Each awardee may then appoint a postdoctoral scientist to spend up to two years in a program intended to stimulate the postdoctoral scientist to carry out further research in support of environmental understanding and values. In general, five institutions are selected annually to receive a total award of $96,000 each.
    Eligibility and Scope
The program is open to all academic and other not-for-profit organizations that have well-established research efforts in environmental science or engineering. These research activities need not be located in traditional departments in the chemical sciences.
