E. References Introduction As previously stated in the section related to desired student outcomes (Huitt, 1997a), in my opinion there are three major issues in the education of young people today. The first is the development of a vision for one's life that includes the discovery and/or defining of one's life mission and desired lifestyle. The second is the development of one's character, dealing with concerns of direction and quality of life. The third deals with the development of competence that deals with concerns of how well one is able to do something. These three issues are addressed specifically in the SCANS report (Whetzel, 1992) and in my critique of that report (Huitt, 1997). Similarly, Walsh (1990) defines education as the process that prepares young people for their social inheritance and advocates three dimensions of educationdevelopment of knowledge, training of mental abilities, and development of character. The issues of vision and competence permeates other sections of these materials (e.g., information processing abstract thinking critical thinking conation/volition .) The focus of this section will be the issue of character. The following two definitions provide examples of a normative view of character:

First, I want to thank the Marich family for their patience working me through the food line. I had worked up quite an appetite up top of the mountain, and I'm glad I got a little of that barbecue. Thank you for your hospitality. I want to thank the directors of the Y for welcoming me to this little slice of heaven. You know, when I was growing up in Texas, a lot of people say, you know, I spent my summer in Estes Park and now I know why. It's a beautiful spot, and thanks for having me. (Applause.) I'm traveling with some folks that you might want to at least say "hello" to. I picked somebody from to head the Department of the Interior who would understand the thinking of the West, who would understand that we can have good, sound environmental policy; that conservation is important. And so when I named Gale Norton from the state of Colorado to be the head of the Department of Interior, a lot of folks came to realize this is an administration that's going to be wise, full of common sense when it comes to preserving the natural beauty of our country. And I'm so thankful Gale Norton is here. Where are you, Gale? Thank you for coming. (Applause.)

A significant change to the overall Character Development Seminar program is the incorporation of separate formats and focus for the four classes. The First Class Midshipmen will participate in a one day Capstone Character Excellence Seminar which will focus solely on issues they will likely deal with as newly commissioned officers. Second, Third, and Fourth Class Midshipmen will have seminar topics tailored to their experience levels and will be included in the Leader of Character Seminars, which will focus on the Navy's core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

AN AGENDA FOR THE 21ST CENTURY by Rushworth M. Kidder (1988)
Contains thoughtful and thought provoking insights by people the book describes as the "world's most compelling thinkers" about the major issues that will face humanity in the 21st Century. Morality is one of the many issues that these "thinkers" address. This is a valuable resource.
CHARACTER EDUCATION: LESSONS FROM THE PAST, MODELS FOR THE FUTURE by James S. Leming (1993)
This short pamphlet reviews existing research on the curricular effectiveness of the morals/values education programs that developed and flourished in the 60s, 70s, and 80s along with a review of the potential of the classroom and school to develop student character. After a brief history of character education in the 20s and 30s, the work presents a conceptual and theoretical perspective for effective character education for the present.
CRITICAL REASONING by Jerry Cederblom and David W. Paulson (1991)
This book is a good introduction to logic and reasoning for people who have little or no familiarity with deductive and inductive logic, logical fallacies, truth trees, etc. Topics include evaluating inductive arguments, empirical generalizations, and empirical theories using real-life examples.

Why is Storytelling an Effective Technique to Use?
Telling stories has long been recognized as an important part of healing, self-knowledge, and personal and spiritual vehicle for connecting us to other people and to God. . . . it is a means for understanding ourselves and our place in the world. We conceive of our lives as a web of stories - a historical novel or a mini-series in the making.. . . . We tell stories in order to live. We use stories to construct meaning and communicate ourselves to another. Stories help us organize and make sense of the experiences of a life.

      "How Do You..."
      ...Involve Parents and Guardians?
      Whose Responsibility?
A common plea heard throughout the nation is that we must put our "Children First!" That is, first in consideration for school funding, after school programs and physical protection. Politicians have been among the earliest converts to this type of thinking, as evident in the frequency with which the "educating for the future" and "Children First" epitaphs are used during election campaigns. Unfortunately, these notions are premised on the assumption that parents/guardians, as well as educators, already have all the tools needed in order to teach children how to be successful, safe and well-behaved students.
For example, many parents/guardians believe strongly that no one has the right or the obligation to teach morality to others, especially to their children, citing freedom of expression and fear of excessive governmental intrusion as key motivators. While people of good intention disagree on whether these concerns are valid, the fact remains that parents/guardians believe (and rightly so) that the job of teaching children right from wrong is theirs.
