The Beauty of Chaos is in its deceptive appearance. Scientific chaos looks disorganized, and can even pass the statistical tests for randomness. Despite this, chaos has an underlying order that can even be predicted in the short term. Delve into some chaos theory while you're here. The Art of Chaos Chaos begins with logic, the formalization of a mathematical equation. Art, too, begins with logic. Formalize the rules of logic into a mathematical formula, plot the result, and you will have created a fractal. Add to this self-similar design the element of human consciousness, and you will have created once-only chaos art. See Chaos on Canvas Visit my original Chaos Art Exhibit and feel free to e-mail me at sales@jessiegietl.com if you see anything you like. All of the artwork is for sale unless otherwise noted. Did the Romans Know? In the words of Julius Caesar, In bello parvis momentis magni casus intercedunt.
(In war great events are caused by small things.) This sounds uncannily like Lorenz' butterfly effect, which pop chaologists love to discuss in the first chapters of their books, because the concept is so easy to get their brains around. Lorenz, of course, was referring to weather, and Caesar, as always, was referring to war. But both nailed a key point in chaos theory: everything depends on that initial small event, or control parameter. Whether or not you believe that Cicero flapping his lips in ancient Rome can cause your webmaster to break out in a rash in present day Los Angeles, I bring you the fun side of

Welcome to Chaos Theory's Website Chaos Theory is a team that formed in June 2002. Although they have just started playing in tournaments, their season has been very suprising. The team practices are held at Muninger's farm which consist of wooded areas and a speedball course. Not only does the farm consist of practices, but just fun days of playing paintball. Anyone is welcome to come and join for free of charge. Objectives of Chaos Theory is to promote the sport of paintball and provide assistance to those who are new to the game.
Accurate, high quality paintballs is important during game time. Chaos Theory uses Kick'n Paintballs.

Chaos and Dialectics
Dialectical materialism, elaborated by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, was concerned with much more than political economy: it was a world view. Nature, as Engels in particular sought to demonstrate in his writings, is proof of the correctness of both materialism and dialectics. "My recapitulation of mathematics and the natural sciences," he wrote, "was undertaken in order to convince myself also in detail…that in nature amid the welter of innumerable changes, the same dialectical laws of motion force their way through as those which in history govern the apparent fortuitousness of events…" (16) What then, are the general features of chaotic systems? Having described them in mathematical terms, what application does the mathematics have? One of the features given prominence by Gleick and others is what has been dubbed "the butterfly effect." Lorenz, had discovered on his computer-simulated weather a remarkable development. One of his simulations was based on twelve variables, including, as we said, non-linear relationships. He found that if he started his simulation with values that were only slightly different from the original—the difference being that one set were down to six decimal places and the second set down three places—then the "weather" produced by the computer soon veered wildly from the original. Where perhaps a slight perturbation might have been expected, there was, only after a brief period of recognisable similarity, a completely different pattern.

Chaotic Systems
The word chaos has both a general meaning and a scientific meaning. As is usually the case, the general meaning tends to convey little of the strict definition that scientists and mathematicians apply to the word. In the American Heritage Dictionary (Note: you can also access the Oxford English dictionary online if the "American Heritage Dictionary" above refuses you access), we find that chaos is described as noun.
1. A condition or place of total disorder or confusion: ``emotions in complete chaos.'' 2. Often [Chaos]. The disordered state of unformed matter and infinite space supposed by some religious cosmological views to have existed prior to the ordered universe. 3. (Obsolete). A vast abyss or chasm. What scientists and mathematicians mean by chaos is very much related to the spirit of the definitions given above. We state that systems are chaotic if they:
  • are deterministic through description by mathematical rules.

The Extended Mind: Understanding Language and Thought in Terms of Complexity and Chaos Theory
Robert K. Logan Assoc. Prof. of Physics - University of Toronto
    Short Abstract:
The origins of speech and the human mind are shown to have emerged simultaneously as the bifurcation from percepts to concepts.
    Long Abstract
Ideas from dynamic systems theory will be used to address a number of fascinating questions related to the origin of language and thought and the dynamic relationship that exists between them. This paper builds from the results of The Fifth Language (R. K. Logan, Toronto, Stoddart, 1995) which assumes that language is both a communication and an informatics tool to show that speech, writing, math science and computing form an evolutionary chain of languages. Adding to these notions ideas from chaos theory, informatics, linguistics, McLuhan's approach to media studies, cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, and archeology of early hominids are used to develop a dynamic systems model of the brain, the mind, language, and cognition which addresses the mind body problem. The origins of speech and the human mind are shown to have emerged simultaneously as the bifurcation from percepts to concepts and a response to the chaos associated with the information overload that resulted from the increased complexity in hominid life. As our ancestors developed toolmaking, controlled fire, lived in larger social groups and engaged in large scale co-ordinated hunting their minds could no longer cope with the richness of life solely on the basis of their perceptual sensorium and as a result a new level of order emerged in the form of conceptualization and speech. Speech arose primarily as a way to control information and then was used as a tool for communication contrary to popular beliefs and inherited wisdom. Thought is not silent speech but rather speech is vocalized thought.

    Fractal Geometry
Chaos Theory is relatively new and sources of information abound on the Internet, especially for those who want to know more about fractals. But there is so much more than fractals to share with your students. I have included some of those sites I found most informative, but some are very technical. These may augment your knowledge without necessitating a course in Chaos at the local university. This site has been designed to offer educators a course in Chaos Theory and Fractal Geometry. The course encompasses the following topics
    • The mathematics and history of Chaos Theory
    • Iterations and recursions
    • Dynamical systems and how they relate to real world situations
    • Graphing non-linear equations and the creation of strange attractors
    • The mathematics of fractal, including fractal generators for students to create their own fractals
    • Mandelbrot and Julia sets
    • Measurement and Scale
This course offers text, relevant web sites, interactive Internet activities to reinforce concepts, and proposals for research topics and presentation modes for students. It is hoped that student projects may be presented for future students to use as models. The course is designed for high school students with a knowledge of Algebra. However, there are links to a number of sites that may be used for younger students. Teacher Support:
    • links to web sites that cover advanced topics in Chaos Theory and Fractal Geometry . These sites are marked by an asterisk. There is very little offered in traditional texts on these subjects, so please feel free to use this course or portions to augment your own offerings to students.

    Close shave with asteroid

The suspect asteroid is one kilometre wide
By BBC News Online Science Editor Dr David Whitehouse A large asteroid could miss the Earth by only 38,000 kilometres in 2027, according to new astronomical observations. This is an extremely close shave - the Moon orbits 10 times further from Earth. The calculations suggest that an impact is not possible that year but, in theory, the Earth's gravity could perturb the asteroid's path, possibly leading to an impact in 2039. The near-miss trajectory of a newly-discovered asteroid, called 1999 AN10, was announced in April. Now, the observational data of Australian astronomer F. Zoltowski allows calculations of just how close the asteroid may come to Earth. Closer and closer Astronomers at the Minor Planet Center at the US Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory used Zoltowski's work to work out an estimated approach distance for AN10 of 56,500 kilometres from Earth. The fly-by will occur on August 7, 2027. But the closest possible distance that AN10 could come to the Earth on that day is only 38,000km.

Make plans to come for the journey!
For 20 millennia droning drums and rattles have guided seekers to the sacred space between creation and the formless.
Becoming a shaman one treads a path of experiential learning. Creativity, Healing, and Shamanism is a 4 day workshop that will lead participants to three objectives on the shaman's trail: education, experience, and encounter. Intentionally primitive, attendees will camp on the earth, gather around the fire, and learn beneath the open sky. This workshop will teach and contrast the Shaman's art of entering sacred space within the framework of traditional shamanism, chaos theory and emerging views in science, and Spiritual traditions from around the world. This workshop does not advance a specific religious perspective but rather explores the common threads woven through many creeds. Attendees will learn by doing as they make their own drums, form a creative community, and engage the power of solitary contemplation and fasting. As a participant in this workshop, you will follow the stages of the creative process to explore a new paradigm for an ancient art, to experience a connection to your faith, nature's spirits, and to evoke the creativity and healing of your inner shaman.
