The Eyes Have It But the most innovative eyes may belong to some North American species of horned lizard, small anteaters equipped with gladiator-like armor, which may be picked on by hungry foxes and coyotes. When cornered, this lizard can squirt blood droplets from a sinus beside its eyes, shooting the blood into the mouth of its attacker. Wade Sherbrooke, a horned lizard specialist who runs the American Museum of Natural History's Southwestern Research Station, writes that the blood "appears to have a repulsive taste to kit foxes and probably to other canids but, as I discovered when I first tried it (the things we do for science!), it was not particularly offensive to my taste buds."

http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/lizards/blood/color.html
Color Schemes When lolling amid foliage, the Malagasy chameleon is a dull, dull green. But disturb this Madagascar lizard and it transforms itself into a mixture of bright yellows, whites and blacks that give it the look of a 1960s psychedelic poster. In fact, when some chameleons duke it out, they heave color displays at each other (rather than bite) until one waves the white flag, returns itself to a nondescript juvenile color and heads off in defeat. Color plays a major defensive role for many lizards. In eastern Australia, the 6-inch leaf-tailed gecko is nearly indistinguishable from the tree bark to which it clings; green lizards of the Central American rainforest blend so seamlessly with their surroundings that they appear to be another component of the flora, rather than the fauna. At night, the color fades from Old World chameleons' skin and, perched at the end of twigs, they're knockoffs for white leaves. The Australian blue-tongued skink has a brightly colored tongue that, when displayed before an aggressor, becomes a tool of intimidation. And the Australian frilled lizard is endowed with brightly colored neck pleats that, when unfurled toward an aggressor (while the lizard opens its mouth and hisses), can send many predators running for cover.

Chameleon Communication
By Donald L. Blanchard
Ken Barnett was handling Zappa, his pet veiled chameleon ( Chamaeleo calyptratus ) one day, when he noticed that it was producing a buzzing sound from an area just in front of its front legs. Insects are known to communicate by producing vibrations which are transmitted along twigs and branches. Although such communications have never been reported among reptiles, Barnett suspected that something similar might occur with chameleons. In a report published in Copeia and reprinted (with permission) in the May, 1999 issue of Herp Beat , the newsletter of the Upstate (NY) Herpetological Association, Ken, along with Reginald Cocroft and Leo Fleishman, report their findings. Ken and his co-workers attached a sensitive accelerometer to one branch of a small branching shrub. A hand-reared adult male chameleon was then placed on the branch, approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from the accelerometer. With the male alone and undisturbed, no vibrations were detected. However, when a receptive female was placed on the same branch, the male commenced a courtship display, changing its coloration, flattening its body, and approached the female. As it did so, it also produced a series of vibrational signals; 137 of them over a period of just over an hour were recorded. Signals were produced in groups of 1 to 14, each typically beginning with a series of high-pitched short signals followed by one longer one. While the signals varied significantly, the shorter high-pitched sounds generally sere above 105 Hz, and lasted less than two tenths of a second. The longer, lower-pitched signals typically lasted close to a second, and were below 90 Hz. (

Chameleon
Chameleon, common name for certain lizards that are well known for their ability to change colors. The chameleon changes color when it is frightened and in response to light, temperature, and other environmental changes. The color change is caused by hormones that affect special pigment-bearing cells in the skin. Its color does not always change to match its surroundings, however, as is commonly believed. The chameleon has a remarkably long, sticky tongue, which darts into the air to catch insects. Its body is unusually shaped, and most chameleons are specially adapted to living in trees. The lizard's long, thin legs raise it from the ground, and its toes are divided into opposable sets of two and three digits that enable it to grasp branches rather than cling to them as with claws. The strong, curled tail is also adapted to grasping. Many chameleons have large domed, or casqued, heads, and males may have as many as three horns, sometimes used for combat. One striking three-horned species is Jackson's chameleon of Africa. The chameleon has a short neck that is of limited mobility; however, the eyes are big and can move independently of each other in many directions. The chameleon has no external eardrum, or tympanic membrane. Chameleons range in size from just a few centimeters to as large as 63 cm (25 in).

ZOTZ!
More than a mouthful: NAU student uncovers chameleon secret
By Julie Otto , Public Affairs Jay Meyers discovered that chameleons, those shy lizards that turn colors when their emotions are high, have more tricks up their sleeve, or should you say, in their mouth. The chameleon's tongue is more than a tool to shovel in food; it's a precise instrument. Not only can their tongues shoot out longer then the length of their bodies, chameleons can pull prey up to 15 percent of their body weight. That's the same as a 180-pound person snapping up a 27-pound holiday turkey into their mouth using only their tongue. Because wild chameleons are known to capture birds and other lizards, Meyers questioned how they are able to feed. What are the muscles in the jaw and mouth that enables such a small creature to feed on such large prey? The result was an intensive collaborative study with Anthony Herrel and other faculty from the University of Antwerp in Belgium. "We knew that the stickiness of their tongues alone couldn't account for it," Meyers said. Meyers, a doctoral student at NAU, focused his research on learning how a chameleon's muscles work.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary © 1994 by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated The family Chamaeleonidae contains 120 to 150 known species. These Old World lizards are easily recognizable as a group. They are all adapted for living arboreal with pincher-like toes that allows for gripping branches and stems. They have sharp vision through conical shaped mounds of skin around independently moving eyes. Almost all of the species have prehensile tails. Chameleons are insectivores and will capture their prey at great distances by zapping the unsuspecting insect with their sticky tongue. It is truly amazing to watch these animals catch their prey, they are incredibly accurate and fast with their tongues, which can extend up to two feet. To many observers, the most spectacular thing about a Chameleon is their ability to change colors. What many people do not realize is that many species actually have poor color changing ability. People also tend to think that the only reason a Chameleon will change its color is to blend with its environment. While the former is true, it is the least likely reason for the color change, more often the color change is due to mood changes or to communicate. When the Chameleon is calm and in a state of rest, it will be muted shades of green, brown, tan and white that blend with their surroundings. When they become excited, happy, fearful, angry, sexually stimulated their colors will become most vivid and extreme.
