81. Fife - Scotland - United Kingdom

http://www.britweb.com/scotland/fife/
Fife Aberdour The town, with a population of just over 1500 persons, is not far from Edinburgh and so is frequented by day trippers seeking to find the quiet of this small and inviting community. The main feature of Aberdour is Aberdour Castle which dates back to the 14th century with additions in the 15th and 16th. The castle also has extensive gardens which include 16th and 17 century gardens.
Culross A finely preserved town (16th & 17th century) of red-tiled houses lining cobbled streets. The town dates back to the 16th century and developed well until the start of Transatlantic trade and the start of industrial areas in the west and central areas. The area was to go into decline for centuries until he National Trust purchased The Palace in 1932. Since then the town has been rediscovered and a renaissance of sorts has begun. The Palace was constructed between 1597 and 1611. The structure is an excellent example of Scottish architecture in spite of the origins of building material outside of the country including a large number of what are clearly Dutch tiles. In the town you can find the Culross Abbey which was founded in 1217. The Butcher's House shows the wares of the trade. The Sea Captains' House is quite interesting and contains a window which has a Greek inscription which reads "God provides and will provide." Dunfirmline The city, which is formerly the capital of Scotland, is known as the "auld grey town." Dramatic new industries have taken over from the coal mining and weaving of the past. The town no longer plays a colourful role in Scottish history but has the treasures from the past to provide us a glimpse of what once was. Andrew Carnagie was born here in 1835 to a man who was a hand loom weaver. After success in business in the United States, he gave many gifts to his old hometown including the Carnagie Baths, Pittencrieff Park, the Lauder Technical School and the Library. Well before Carnagie came the Dunfermline Abbey which dates to about 1070. The Abbey built up considerable wealth due to its extensive property, ferry tolls and coal pits. Its association with the royal establishment elevated its status to that of "the Westminster of Scotland" with 22 royals buried there.

Glasgow A wonderful city that has often been side-tracked by the tourist in favour of its more glamorous neighbour Edinburgh. Mainly due to the infamous "Gorbals" which was reputed to be one of the worst slums in Europe.
Today it has all changed.
It began with the Garden Festival in 1988, followed by a year long party as the European City of culture in 1999. It is now presently hosting the City of Architecture and Design. For further information on attractions, including opening times and admission charges PRESS HERE
