How to bicycle the Danube River Valley, Austria
Rating: Excellent Nature of the Ride: The Danube River ( Donau in German) flows from its source at Donaueschingen in the Black Forest of Germany, to the Black Sea, 2900 kilometers (1,700 miles) downstream. Serbia and Romania are not considered safe for western bikers, on and off the road. In Germany and in Hungary, many bikers do follow the Danube . However, by far the most popular section for biking is the Austrian Danube between Passau, Germany (on the Austrian border) and Vienna, a total distance of 340 kilometers (~200 miles). The reasons for this popularity lies in a great concentration of tourist sights, with new variety for each day of a ride; and in the presence of wide bike paths (or very minor roads) that keep cyclists apart from traffic, usually right alongside the river. (Whereas, in Germany one often rides on roads and in Hungary, on roads and on highways.) Also, in case of bad weather, river steamers provide a painless way to continue a journey. The Danube bike route is excellent for families with children, and attracts many families. The way is

Masonry Museum in Austria - Schloss Rosenau
The castle of Rosenau
"Schloss Rosenau", the only Freemason's-museum in Austria is because of its site and its architecture a cultural centre of the "Waldviertel". It is located nine kilometres west of the town of Zwettl in the federal province of Lower Austria. This Renaissance-castle was built by Mr. Greiss from 1589 to 1593 and was first documentarily mentioned in 1593. In the middle of the 18th century Count Loepold Christoph Schallenberg reconstructed the castle in a baroque stile according to the plan and building supervision of the famous architect Munggenast. After his son Count Josef Schallenberg has sold the domain in 1803, the ownership has changed a number of times. During World War II and in particular during the time of the Russian occupation the building suffered considerably. In a desolate condition it was eventually purchased by the federal province of Lower Austria. An association was set up to restore the building to its baroque splendour and to prepare it for a museum. The most important discovery during the interior restoration were the decorated rooms on the first floor in the southern part that once had been a freemasons meeting place. This unique find with its signed frescos prompted the association to set up a Masonic museum in the rooms in which a Lodge had met in the 18th century.

Day 9
Tuesday
16 July 2002 Tentative Activity: Day Tour of Burgenland

Travel from Eisenstadt with a Robber-Baron lunch at Castle Lockenhaus.
Continue on through the province of Burgenland with dinner and wine tasting in Rust on Lake Neusiedler. Burg Lockenhaus , Burgenland
The oldest known document referring to Castle Lockenhaus dates back to 1242. In another document from 1671, the knights/hall was referred to as the meeting place of the templars.
Schloß Lockenhaus is the one and only castle in Austria, which has the character of a well-preserved knight's castle. Between 1676 and 1968 the castle was part of the empire of the Esterhazy dynasty, and since that time it is owned by a foundation, and managed by the province of Burgenland.
On a Guided-Tour through the castle you will find romantic and gothic architecture, dainty column-windows, frescos, subterranean halls, crypt and other details of the 13th century, which demonstrate the high developed sensation of art and the rich history of the castle. Today the castle, after major reconstruction, hosts many activities. Several music festivals are given annually in the festival hall, which can hold over 600 people. The Robber-Baron Dinner The Robber-Baron dinner traditionally given at Castle Lockenhaus is a social event. The menu covers a guided tour in the castle, aperitif, knights snack, grilled porkling, dessert and wine. It is a tradition to use your hands instead of knife and fork at the "Robber-Baron" dinner, (they do supply a large bib). The province of Burgenland is known for producing among the best wines of Austria. Specifically the country around Castle Lockenhaus is famous for the blue grape "Blaufränkisch".

Created with the financial support of the Czech Minister of Culture and the firm Ipix The main cellar area, originally unified, is 48 m long and 8.5 meters high, while the wagon vault of the cellar is 4.6 m high at its peak. The room has retained its Renaissance appearance up to the present. In the 16th century the cellars served as stables, and according to archival information up to one hundred horses could have been kept here. The window segments are five-sided, confirming the Renaissance origin of these rooms which were built around 1580. The western part of the cellars were modified by a younger Baroque wall which now divides the area. There is access to other cellar spaces from the eastern side which, as archival sources indicate, were used as a prison in the 19th century. The present-day entrance to the cellars is original, and was separated from the I. courtyard by a moat in the 16th century. This moat was localised during archaeological excavations in 1997 in the area of today's

What is a Castle?
By Stephen Francis Wyley Drawings by Steven Lowe
Figure 1. Quadrangular castle. What is a Castle? Is it a masonry edifice constructed on a hilltop with tall towers punctuating the curtain walls topped by battlements? Can you imagine a column of knights in full plate armour mounted on war horses charging out of the main gate over the lowered drawbridge to do battle against an attacking enemy force, while beautifully coiffed ladies watch from a tower window, and serfs till the earth to grow harvest so that the lord of the castle can continue to spend money on courtly pursuits and new armour form Italy or Germany? This imagined spectacle represents the feudal system where the castle was a place of both residence and defence for a lord. On the other hand was a castle simply a base for military and administrative operations, such as; dispensing justice and collecting taxes and tolls; subjugating conquered lands; suppressing rebellion and unrest; acting as a base for raids or invasions; protecting trade and territory from attack or just to attack another castle. Whatever the case, the castle has become a visual symbol of the Medieval period and everyone has their own view of the subject, be it coloured by their educational background and the bounds of their imagination.

Austria Travel Where to Go in Austria BAD GASTEIN This famous health spa, casino and ski area, much of which dates back to the 1500s, is set in the spectacular Gastein Valley. From the train station, the town plunges into a steep valley with church spires and rustic lodges stacked one on top of the other and wooded peaks arranged overhead. Although the town is overbuilt, it is still easy to see why it has attracted such famous guests as Schubert, Constanze Mozart (the composer's wife), Kaiser Wilhelm and Emperor Franz Josef. Winter activities include excellent skiing, tobogganing and horse-drawn sleigh rides; summertime attractions include hiking and horseback riding. There's good shopping year-round. Bad Hofgastein , just down the valley, also offers nice scenery and spas. It is quieter and not as well known: We find it more relaxing than Bad Gastein.
