Pre-Law Agnes Scott students interested in law enjoy a sound foundation for the pursuit of their goals and chosen career. A challenging and broad liberal arts curriculum develops just the sort of skills and qualities law schools seek in applicants. An active pre-law club and knowledgeable and approachable faculty and pre-law advisers provide legal programming and advice to support students throughout the admissions process. Agnes Scott’s Atlanta location in a major legal hub offers abundant opportunities for students to observe or get directly involved in the legal process. What should my major be?
In line with the best liberal arts colleges and the preferences of law schools, Agnes Scott College does not have a major or program specifically designated as “pre-law.” Instead, law schools advise students intending to pursue law as a career to major in a liberal arts subject of their choosing. There is no favored major; rather, law admissions officers advise students to select any major that appeals to them as long as that major will challenge them and teach them to read carefully, write and speak effectively and think analytically. Are there courses that I should take to prepare for law school?

Department of Political Science Department-Based Assessment Activities 1. Goals for Student Learning in the Department of Political Science The Department of Political Science is part of the College of Arts and Sciences. At the undergraduate level, the purpose of the college is to provide students with a solid, well-rounded, liberal arts education rather than train them for a specific profession. More courses are required to fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences requirements than are required for the major. Assessment of the kind of education political science majors receive at Ohio University can, therefore, only be made within the context of their whole liberal arts program. The general goals of the department are the same as they have been for the last two years. They were developed through discussions within the department's Curriculum Committee and with the faculty as a whole during the process of our curricular review during 1993-96. They were discussed by the faculty as a whole again last year during the department's discussion of assessments of outcomes. A. Goals for Undergraduate Majors

VIEWING TIPS Top-paid appointed attorneys speak on indigent defense system By Max B. Baker, Star-Telegram Staff Writer FORT WORTH A group of court-appointed attorneys makes more than $1.6 million a year representing indigent criminal defendants in a legal system that critics say is unfair to the poor. Allan Butcher, Bill Ray and Leon Haley were among 25 lawyers who received about 39 percent of the $20.2 million the county spent on indigent criminal defendants from 1995 to 1999, including capital punishment trials. Tarrant County judges typically pay lawyers $60 to $100 an hour for court-appointed cases. Most privately retained criminal defense attorneys charge $150 to $200 an hour. The top-paid lawyers said they represent their poor clients with the same zeal as they do those who pay them tens of thousands of dollars. For most cases, lawyers are paid about $500 but on complicated, lengthy assignments they can receive as much as $30,000, according to the analysis. The attorneys said they tend to make more money per appointed case than others down the list because judges choose them for clients who have committed the most serious crimes. Defending a capital murder, murder or aggravated robbery case usually takes more time and effort.

    Guide to Pre-Law
The pre-law curriculum at UL-Lafayette provides students interested in careers in law with a balanced and challenging course of study. The curriculum is designed to meet the Association of American Law Schools guidelines for prelegal education and is coupled with sound career Counseling and assistance with the law school admissions process. The program, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, has been offered from the first days of the university and is the only curriculum in the university specifically designed with the pre-law student in mind. Hundreds of students have completed the pre-law Curriculum and been admitted to law schools throughout the nation. These include Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Texas as well as the Louisiana law schools at Tulane, Loyola, Southern, and LSU. Students who achieve a high grade point average in their undergraduate work and score well on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) will be especially attractive candidates for the most competitive law schools. Advisory Services Effective academic and career advising is particularly emphasized in UL-Lafayette's pre-law program. Two political science faculty members serve as specialized advisors to pre-law majors. They are prepared to provide information about individual law schools, their admission requirements and procedures, and their scholarship programs. These two faculty members currently belong to and have held offices in the Southwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors.

    Other Options for Continued Study
I'm interest in law but I'm unsure about law school. Are there options?
Law school is not the only path to a law-related career. Students who have a career interst in law may wish to delay or forego law school for various reasons. Academic burnout, financial problems, or future uncertainties are valid reasons for considering law school alternatives. For those facing such problems, there are law-related careers or options which should be investigated. A number of our students have opted for such careers.
What are some of the options?
Legal Assistant programs are offered at several colleges, universities and proprietary schools. There is a wide variety in the nature of the programs. Some are summer programs offered for students between their junior and senior years. Other may be four or six months of intensive study. Still others are full academic year programs. Usually, these are certificate programs, and not degree programs.
    What do legal assistants do?

To insure success, the student should be at the college level in reading and writing. For College Placement Curriculum deficiencies, a student may take either one of the U.S. Histories or World History courses. If taking history online, the successful student must be able to study independently, be self-motivated, and be able to meet deadlines.
