Nga Putaiao Tangata Industry Overview
Scientific research is increasingly being recognised as crucial to the development of a modern knowledge economy. The New Zealand Government invests approximately 0.6% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in science and technology by purchasing research, technology development, and services from Crown Research Institutes, universities, research associations and the private sector. This figure looks likely to increase to 0.8% of GDP by 2010. Approximately 2,000 people identified themselves as physical scientists in the 1996 Census and another 4,400 identified themselves as working in related technician roles. Physical scientists in New Zealand are principally employed at Crown Research Institutes, universities and research companies in the private and public sectors. Research in physical sciences is broad ranging and includes, for example, observations on how weather systems develop, laser physics and the production of anti-tumour drugs from marine organisms. Public investment in research, science and technology was approximately $490 million in 2000/2001 and there are political commitments to increase this investment over the next 15 years. Approximately 80% of this money is targeted investment, aimed at achieving defined economic, social and environmental objectives. This includes money invested in science and technology in government departments, Technology New Zealand, the Health Research Council, the New Economy Research Fund, and Environmental Research. The remaining 20% is untargeted investment, and includes the Marsden Fund and funded research in universities.

World Wide Web: http://www.physsci.uci.edu/ Department of Chemistry Department of Earth System Science Department of Mathematics Department of Physics and Astronomy The School of Physical Sciences offers both professional training and general education in the Departments of Chemistry, Earth System Science, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. The faculty, active in research and graduate education, are at the same time vitally concerned with undergraduate teaching. Curricula of the School are designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students ranging from those with little technical background who seek insight into the activities and accomplishments of physical scientists to those seeking a comprehensive understanding that will prepare them for creative research in physical science. Over the course of the past century and a half, physics, chemistry, and mathematics have evolved into interdependent but separate intellectual disciplines. This development is reflected in the departmental structure of the School of Physical Sciences. In the same period, these fundamental disciplines have moved into domains of abstraction unimagined by early scientists. This trend to abstraction with its concomitant increase in understanding of the physical universe provides the major challenge to the student of the physical sciences. Mathematics, physics, and chemistry, while providing the foundation of the technology that dominates contemporary civilization, underlie to an ever-increasing extent the new developments in the biological and social sciences. Earth system science is grounded in the traditional physical sciences while breaking new paths in the quantitative study of changes in the global environment.

We, the faculty of the Division of Biological and Physical Sciences, have two primary missions. The first and most important is to provide excellent teaching through courses that are designed to support the various programs offered within the division. The second mission is to provide a variety of quality undergraduate research experiences that enhance the development of students as scientists and that prepare them for post-graduate careers. To support these missions, each faculty member is provided with a teaching laboratory and a research laboratory in a modern facility that is designed to support an array of technologies. Each classroom is equipped with multi-media capabilities and connections to the Internet. The University supports our missions by providing funds that have been used to purchase an array of modern equipment, including computers. The faculty members within the division and the University remain committed to raising new funds necessary to maintain this equipment and to support the research of its undergraduate students. Our graduates are very competitive within the job market and in professional and graduate schools.

Liam Gallagher and Stephen Hawking could have more in common than they thought. Individual rankings in pop music and physics follow exactly the same pattern, a study has shown. Jamie Davies, a researcher from the University of Edinburgh, has found that the way success is distributed among best-selling musicians and famous physicists is strikingly similar. In other words, the same proportions of rockers and researchers make long-lasting contributions to their field, enjoy moderate but sustained success and experience occasional glimpses of glory.

    School Overview
The School's undergraduate curricula are structured to allow students many opportunities to participate in small sections with extensive student-faculty interaction. By offering honors courses and programs, research opportunities, and specially designed "majors only" courses, the departments are able to provide smaller classes and more intensive academic challenges to highly motivated students in all Stages of their undergraduate careers. Undergraduate research opportunities are plentiful; typically, about half of the graduating students have engaged in research with a faculty member during their time at UCI. Participation in research can lead to presentations at local and national conferences, and publication in scientific journals, and can significantly enhance a resume or graduate school application. In addition to a distinguished group of senior faculty, including the 1995 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, many of the School's faculty are young, highly productive scholars who are rapidly becoming leaders in their fields. Students who choose to attend UCI have the opportunity to work closely with professors who have received numerous prestigious national and international awards in recognition of their excellence in both research and teaching.
    Academic Offerings
    Chemistry
UC Irvine's Department of Chemistry faculty work at the forefront of knowledge in every major area of chemistry, and a UCI Chemistry major is well prepared to meet the challenges of our modern technological world. Courses are offered at introductory, upper-division, and graduate levels in a broad range of subjects, including physical, organic, inorganic, analytical, biological, atmospheric, and materials chemistry.
