Sea Grant Publishes Guide To Marine Science Careers
COLLEGE PARK, MD. Does your son or daughter want to be a marine biologist? Do you want to know if that's a good career choice? A recently produced Sea Grant publication can help you and your child find the answers. Marine Science Careers: A Sea Grant Guide to Ocean Opport unities describes the fields of marine biology, oceanography and ocean engineering as well as other closely related fields and offers some insight as to what the future holds as far as career opportunities go in these fields. In addition, the guide contains question and answer profiles of 38 marine scientists and other professionals from around the country. These men and women talk about how they got into their careers, what they do, what they like and dislike about their wor k, what they see for the future in their fields, and much more. The guide is being distributed by Sea Grant, a national network of 29 research and education programs dedicated to the wise use and conservation of our marine and Great Lakes resources for the public benefit. Individual copies cost $5 and can be ordered from Sea Grant Communications, Kingman Farm, University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H. 03828-3512 (checks payable to UNH) or from Sea Grant Communications, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 193 Oyster Pond Rd., CRL 209, Woods Hole, Mass. 02543-1525 (checks payable to WHOI).
REVIEW COMMENTS OF NEW SEA GRANT CAREER GUIDE:
A guidance counselor from Milwaukee, Wisc.: "What I like most about Marine Science Careers is its comprehensiveness. Not only does it give job information and where to learn more, but it also gives students real life feedback from workers in the field. I wouldn't change a thing. It is too rare that we guidance counselors are given concise, relevant information on specific careers to give our students."

90. About Marine Biology | Marine Science Institute

http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/academics/about_marinebio.htm
About Marine Biology
What is Marine Biology?
  • Marine biology is the study of marine organisms, their behaviors and interactions with the environment. Marine biologists study biological oceanography and the associated fields of chemical, physical, and geological oceanography to understand marine organisms. Marine biology is a very broad area, so most researchers select a particular area of interest and specialize in it. Specializations can be based on a particular species, group, behavior, technique, or ecosystem. Molecular biology is a related area of specialization in marine biology. Researchers apply molecular techniques to many environments ranging from coastal marshes to the deep sea and to various organisms such as viruses, plants, and fish.
Why is Marine Science Important?
  • As growing global population stresses the ability of our society to produce food, water, and shelter, we will continue to look to the oceans to help sustain our basic needs. Advances in technology, combined with demand, will improve our ability to derive food, drinking water, energy sources, waste disposal, and transportation from the ocean. It will be up to this and future generations to build upon our existing knowledge of the ocean and its potential to help meet the needs of the world and its inhabitants.

91. Marine Biology Career Questionaire
SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT A marine biology CAREER. It was in graduateschool that marine biology took over as my primary interest.
http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/marinebio/mycareer.html
SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT A MARINE BIOLOGY CAREER 1. What, in your opinion, are the disadvantages of being a Marine Biologist? Don't see any real disadvantages at all. Can't complain about freedom (a fair amount), opportunities (lots in everything from government to teaching to popular book writing) 2. What, in your opinion, are the advantages of being a Marine Biologist? Advantages include doing what you love to do; travel, often to fascinating and lovely places; interactions with interesting folks. 3. If you could do it all over again, would you have chosen this field? Why? Maybe, but maybe not. Who knows why? Life is complex. I started wanting to be a writer, but found that I loved geology and majored in this in college and in graduate school. It was in graduate school that marine biology took over as my primary interest. 4. I heard that it is hard to get a job as a Marine Biologist because of the few job openings. Was it hard for you? I was lucky as jobs were relatively accessible in the early 1970s but one should not enter a field without a realistic understanding of the job market. Govt. jobs and academic jobs are very competitive but still available. I have had 16 students get Ph.D.s and all are employed or on the way. I am optimistic. 5. What do you find the most satisfying part of this field?

94. Marine Biology
Required qualifications Usually, at least a BSc. (Bachelor of Science)in biology, marine biology, Zoology or another biological science.
http://www.btinternet.com/~Jess.Jones/marbio.htm
Definition: The study of plant and animal life in the world's oceans, rivers and lakes. Required qualifications: Usually, at least a BSc. (Bachelor of Science) in Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology or another biological science. Course lengths vary, but in the UK undergraduate courses in science usually last 3-4 years. In general, a Masters degree is the first opportunity students have to specialise in marine mammals.
  • In the UK: To gain entry onto a biological science degree course usually requires A Levels or equivalent in Biology and Chemistry plus one other subject, preferably Physics or Maths. The required grades vary depending on which university you apply for. In the US: A broad range of subjects, with good grades, is essential for your high school studies.
Other skills: Good background in all the sciences, plus good IT skills and mathematics skills. Languages skills can also be useful depending on where you are working around the world. Salary: Varies, but the starting salary is usually about £15,000 ($30,000 approx.), going up to £30,000 ($60,000). The better your qualifications, the higher your salary! Marine biology is the study of all animal and plant life that lives under water - both in the sea and in rivers and lakes. This ranges from tiny, single-celled organisms, to coral, to marine mammals such as whales and dolphins. Marine biologists try to find out more about how marine organisms survive - such as hunting and feeding techniques; defence against predators; courtship and mating rituals; and how they interact with the surrounding environment. The actual job is usually a combination of field work and lab work, with large amounts of time also devoted to writing up reports.
