Teachers learn to make life sciences fun
The first batch is doing a course by overseas experts on teaching scientific concepts to children. The Straits Times, 29th January, 2002 Teachers here are getting new ideas from overseas experts on making the life sciences simple, relevant and fun for students. Some 25 teachers are attending a workshop on teaching the concepts of genetics at the National Institute of Education (NIE). They are the first of hundreds of primary and secondary school teachers who will go through similar training over the next few years. They are taking part in a three-day course conducted by Dr Maureen Munn and Dr Megan Brown of the University of Washington, both former scientists with doctorates in molecular biology and genetics, and experts in teaching life-science concepts to children. The teachers' sessions are free, thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Biomedical Research Council, which supports and coordinates public-sector biomedical research and development here.
