A Word From the President
What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?
And yet I worry that many students are still relying on luck to lead them to the "right field" because they feel as much on their own in choosing their specialty as I did. Most schools still lack adequate resources to provide truly comprehensive career counseling services, even though the need is arguably greater now than it was in my day. The array of career options, both within and outside the conventional boundaries of medicine, is rapidly expanding. And today's students rack up record-breaking debt just to get through school, making the stakes of choosing the "right" field for them higher than ever. In an effort to help both students and their school-based counselors access more robust career planning tools, the AAMC developed Careers in Medicine (originally "MedCareers"). Launched in 1999, this program is designed to equip medical students with the tools and information they need to assess their spec- ific talents and values, to explore the various specialty options of interest to them, and to assist them through the residency application process. The only program of its kind, Careers in Medicine is structured so that students can begin benefiting from it as early as their first year of medical school and subsequently use it to support their individual decision-making processes as they progress through their four years of education and training.

Academic Affairs
Student Affairs The Student Affairs Office has responsibility for overseeing the academic progress of students, the grading and evaluation system, the advising and career counseling systems, the support systems, special research programs and opportunities, and the financial aid program. Below are highlights of information related to these areas of student programs for medical students.
Evaluation Of Student Performance
The awarding of the Doctor of Medicine degree is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all graduation requirements, which include academic and non-cognitive areas of assessment. As such, student evaluation is based upon the faculty's observation of the student's behavior and conduct as well as academic performance in the basic science and clinical coursework, completion of the Independent Study in Medical Science research paper, and passage of both Steps 1 and 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Grading System : Beginning with the class entering in 1996, the School of Medicine has an official (transcript) grading system of Honors, Pass, and Fail for the HuBio curriculum and Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail for the clinical curriculum. An internal level of assessment, Evaluator Concern, is included on the grading form, but is not an official transcript grade. The School's goal is to provide a curriculum that defines the competencies to be achieved by the student at each level. With the grading system, there is no class standing or grade point average assigned.

He has also done graduate work in Counseling at Boston State College. Since coming to Boston University as a Career Development Counselor in 1974, he has been extensively involved in providing services covering all facets of the career development process. He is particularly interested in encouraging early use of career services by freshmen and sophomores as well as in increasing the number of local, regional, and national employers who recruit Boston University graduates on campus. Deborah Halliday Deborah Halliday, Assistant Director of Career Services, joined the Boston University community in December 1998. She brings a background in business administration, and was previously employed as an Assistant Vice President at State Street Bank, where she was responsible for analyzing and re-designing business operations and developing training and education programs for staff. She holds an MBA from Suffolk University, an MA in American Studies from the University of Massachusetts, and a BA in Sociology. Debbie is excited about what Career Services has to offer students, from practical job-hunting advice, career fairs and employer visits, to help with thinking about majors, careers, and how it all fits into "life." Most of all, she hopes that students will come visit, take advantage of all that the Office has to offer, and give the staff their feedback and suggestions as to how we can serve them better.

    Introduction
School Guidance studies at Goddard provide special opportunities within our Teacher Education program . The graduate concentration in School Guidance is designed for working adults, combining intensive, eight-day-long residencies with supervised independent study and a written dialogue with a Goddard faculty member. Leading to a master's degree with licensure in School Guidance, this 48 credit-hour program usually requires four semesters for completion.
While all students will need to develop competency in most of the study areas listed below, the sequence and manner in which they do so will depend on their particular interests and abilities. Below, under "Sample Program Sequence" is an example of one possible sequence of studies.
    Program Vision
We believe that counselors and teachers (along with administrators, parents and students) must work together to structure and facilitate learning experiences. We conceptualize the school counselor's role as follows:
Guidance in the school is for all students. Its purpose is to work with all members of the school community to help the school to maximally facilitate personal development and interpersonal competence. This concept of "comprehensive developmental guidance" includes deliberate psychological education, human relations training, preventative mental health education, and more traditional forms of individual and group counseling and assistance with career and academic planning. More specifically, the school counselor should be prepared to perform the following roles:

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career decisions and problems. Their duties depend on the individuals they serve and on the settings in which they work. Educational, vocational, and school counselors Elementary school counselors observe younger children during classroom and play activities, and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate their strengths, problems, or special needs. They also help students develop good study habits. They do less vocational and academic counseling than do secondary school counselors. School counselors at all levels help students understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they occur, and to enhance personal, social, and academic growth. Counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs, and classes that teach students to handle conflicts without resorting to violence. Counselors also try to identify cases involving domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student's development. Counselors work with students individually, with small groups, or with entire classes. They consult and work with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, school nurses, and social workers.

    • More than 4 out of 10 psychologists are self-employed, about 6 times the average for professional workers. A doctoral degree usually is required for employment as a licensed clinical or counseling psychologist. Opportunities for employment in psychology for those with only a bachelor's degree are extremely limited.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Research psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Psychologists in applied fields provide mental health care in hospitals, clinics, schools, or private settings. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Research methods vary depending on the topic under study. Psychologists sometimes gather information through controlled laboratory experiments or by administering personality, performance, aptitude, and intelligence tests. Other methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys.
