West Nile Virus Facts Robin Rowland, Amina Ali and Gary Graves The West Nile virus hitting Canada and the U.S. is a more lethal and infectious strain than anticipated. Last summer, doctors thought all but the frail and sick could fight off the infection. Now they're on the lookout for a "polio-like" condition called sudden limb paralysis. It can appear in otherwise healthy adults who may be infected with the virus. West Nile virus is carried and spread by mosquitoes and can cause fatal inflammation of brain (encephalitis) or the membranes covering the brain or spinal cord (meningitis) in more than 100 bird species, and nine mammals, including humans, horses and gorillas. It is closely related to St. Louis encephalitis virus, found in North America. There is currently no vaccine against West Nile virus encephalitis. West Nile virus was discovered in the West Nile area of Uganda in 1937, then spread to Mediterranean and temperate parts of Europe. In 1960, it was observed in horses in Egypt and France. Between the 1950s and 1999, there were sporadic epidemics in Israel, South Africa, Romania and in Russia. Scientists in North America had assumed we were facing a strain that exists in Africa. Then birds across Canada and the U.S. started falling from the sky. That pointed to Israel, where the strain can cause more dangerous results than the traditional encephalitis symptoms.

Axel Munthe Each zoo facility differs in size, number of animals, number of staff, hours of operation, and even whether they are accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). In fact, only a handful of Canadian Zoos are accredited to this organization whose stated purpose is, "to promote the welfare of and encourage the advancement and improvement of zoology, education, conservation and science." Despite the best efforts of zoologists, zoo environments remain artificial with many not even coming close to the animals natural habitat. Zoo habitats are usually very small and inhibit or preclude natural behaviors like flying, swimming, running, hunting, climbing, scavenging, and partner selection. Relative to the space afforded to these animals in the wild, zoo environments are pitiful. For example, a tiger's range in the wild is anywhere from 8-400 square miles, depending on the plentitude of food. At the San Diego Zoo, the self proclaimed "largest zoo in the world", 4000 animals share 0.156 square miles - including the tigers! In addition to their small living space, zoo animals are on nearly constant public display, and their schedules are completely controlled by humans. They are essentially prisoners with very well decorated cells. Zoo visitors are not learning about an animals' natural behaviour when visiting a zoo. They are seeing and learning how animals behave in captivity. Many zoo animals have been observed exhibiting stereotypic behaviour such as bar biting, head-bobbing, swaying, and pacing - these are all signs of psychosis due to confinement. Information about the animals' NATURAL habitat and behavior is rarely read and each visitor only observes an animal display for 8-60 seconds. Children are learning that it is acceptable to capture and confine wild, exotic animals; put them on display; and profit from their misery. Very few ever develop a true empathy for these animals and even fewer help with habitat conservation efforts.

Activity Based Costing of "Alinta’s Creatures in the Night" 1. Introduction The Environmental Engineering Design class on behalf of its Client, the Perth Zoo, has prepared an Interim Report. The objective of this report is to provide an update on the current status of the Sustainable Resource Management Plan. It is also designed as an opportunity for the client to provide input on the direction of the project. Appendices Appendix 1.2: Activity Based Costing of "Alinta’s Creatures in the Night" Finance (top) Appendix 1.0: Financial Analysis Admission revenue for the period 1994/1995 to 1999/2000 is illustrated below (Figure A1-1). Over this 6 year period revenue has increased from $1 763 600 to $3 695 773, an increase of 110%. There has been an increase in admission revenue every year, except in the last period where it fell by 3.5%. This can be attributed to a drop in admission numbers, as the price of entry has not been lowered in any year. Figure A1-1: Admission Revenue The greatest increase in revenue occurred in 1995/96. Revenue increased slightly over 50%, from $1 763 600 to $2 647 617. This resulted primarily to the fact that admission charges increased in accordance with the endorsed five-year Business Plan. Attendance Numbers have fluctuated slightly on a year-to-year basis, with no evidence of clear trends or rising attendance numbers. Attendance has remained fairly constant, which is clearly evident by the trendline. This is illustrated in Figure A1-2: Figure A1-2: Admission Numbers Total Revenue (Figure A1-3) has remained rather stagnant over the last few years, particularly after 1996/97. Prior to this time it is evident that the implementation of the 5-Year Management Plan had a strong flow-on effect to increasing revenue for 94/95, 95/96 and 96/97.

Potbellied and other miniature pigs belong to the family of domestic pig called the Sus Scrofa Domestica. They are often referred to as the "Canadian mini-pig." The Vietnamese potbellied pig became almost extinct during the WWII famine in China. Some of the refugees brought pigs north with them and then in the 1950's, some were brought into Europe for zoos. They were systematically bred in Sweden in the mid 1960's because they created good laboratory size animals with organs and vital functions similar to humans. Then in the 1970's, Keith Connell went to Europe to import unique pigs for the Canadian zoos. Then later they came to the United States and became household pets. Because of the strict import laws in the United States, our gene pool for the potbellied pig is still relatively small compared to their cousins the farm hogs. The Vietnamese Potbellied pigs soon became the pet of the 80's called the Yuppy Puppies. But with new types of miniature pigs moving in, the prices have been dropping off for the potbellied pig and the focus has changed. Many believe that the era of the pet pig is over, but as we travel around the country, we tend to see a different picture. The potbellied pig may not be as expensive as they started out to be, but still people love pet pigs. Now we are getting quite a variety of miniature pigs in the US and other countries. Chinese Miniatures, South Pacific Nesting Pigs, and Kune Kune to name a few.
