Living in the Canadian Technology Triangle
The Region of Waterloo, population 406,090 (/96 census) includes the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, and the townships of Woolwich, Wilmot, Wellesley, and North Dumfries. Together with the city of Guelph, the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge form Canada's Technology Triangle (CTT). Waterloo Region's continual economic growth is in part due to its large number of advanced science and technology industries-many of them spin-offs from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. Over 350 high-tech and advanced technology firms are located in the CTT. With a wide spectrum of employment opportunities, a low average cost of living (Feb/97 CPI 137.3), excellent value and availability of housing, low residential realty taxes, full complement of amenities, diversified dining choices, recreational opportunities, cultural events, health care facilities, and universities (over 17,000 students increase the population annually), citizens of Waterloo Region enjoy an enviable quality of life. Innovation at Work for Canada
Industry Minister Alan Rock
Industry Minister Allan Rock to the House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology May 7, 2002 (IRAP) began work to consider its future directions and goals. IRAP's existing strategic plan was nearing its end - the goals established in the mid-1990s achieved or in need of change in light of new opportunities. During this period, NRC itself was considering its vision and strategic directions, and in early 2002 introduced its Vision to 2006. NRC's Vision and its five key principles provided IRAP with an enriched framework for focusing its efforts to achieve excellence and leadership in support of Canadian SMEs to innovate locally, but compete globally. At the same time, over the past year especially, the Government of Canada was assessing how to improve Canada's innovation performance. This too has affected the context within which IRAP was developing its strategic plan - emphasizing the need to consider how best to use IRAP's mandate and achievements to mobilize national action.

Canadian Nuclear Society Ottawa, November 17-19, 1999 Program The Climate Change And Energy Options Symposium will be organized into four sessions. An opening session introduces the Kyoto Protocol and the process initiated by Canada's Climate Change Secretariat to establish options for consideration to meet Canad a's commitment to the protocol. It will also discuss Canadian and world energy needs in the context of gradually depleting fossil fuel supplies. The next session will establish the potential of various alternate energy sources that are free of greenhouse gas emissions, in a coordinated effort to reduce Canada's GHG emissions. Papers in this session will discuss the potential of solar, wind, hyd ro and nuclear energy in turn, and the scope for substitution of Canada's fossil fuel based energy systems. The magnitude of energy supply and GHG reduction potential will be estimated, taking into consideration supporting technology needed and land-use t o expand their utilization. The subsequent two sessions will cover introduction of GHG-free energy, issues related to the implementation of these energy technologies, and improvements made to fossil fuel-based energy technologies. Specific applications of these technologies, and research and development initiatives to improve performance and decrease costs will be addressed. Speakers from a wide range of technology including developments in solar, wind, fossil fuel, and nuclear energy as well as supporting or "cross-cutting" enab ling technology in transport, fuel cells, oil production, hydrogen production, etc. will present their views. CANADIAN TECHNOLOGY TO REWRITE RULES OF MARINE DATA GATHERING Image Available Technology currently under development by a Canadian high tech firm will rewrite the rules of field data gathering in the ocean science community. For example, an arctic scientist in a laboratory in Winnipeg will be enabled to communicate, via wireless Internet, with his seabed mapping device on a ship sailing Baffin Bay. The technology will increase the operational capacity of ships engaged in marine science activities, while the scientist will be assured of higher quality environmental information over larger areas and at less expense. First deployment of the technology is scheduled for September 2001 when a vessel studying the habitat of turbot in the Labrador Sea will have a seabed mapping device controlled remotely. The scientist will place an order for a data set via the Internet. The mapping system will be activated via a satellite link and report daily on its activities and its location.
