Burma Revisited
by Atholl Sutherland Brown
Nostalgia is in most ways an inappropriate word for the emotions that drew me back to Burma in February 1997. I had spent 1944 at airfields on the Bengal-Burma frontier as a pilot in the RCAF with 177 Squadron RAF. We flew Bristol Beaufighter twin-engined ground attack fighters with 901 Wing of the Third Tactical Air Force engaged in interdicting the railways, roads and rivers of Burma as well as attacking the Japanese-held airfields. We ranged at low level all over Burma (Myanmar) and northern Siam (Thailand) and, for our small numbers, had a devastating impact on the supply and reinforcement of the Japanese armies. Histories of the Second World War generally ignore the importance of the Burma campaign in which, nevertheless, the largest land battles against the Japanese took place, saving India from the trials of Burma, and liberating Burma itself so that it soon gained independence after hostilities ended. As D-Day veterans return to Normandy I returned to Burma with the added interest of the availability of its vast archaeological treasures, the charming otherworldliness of the people, the pleasing climate of its cool season and for a view of a country in transition.
It is difficult to find advice in Canada for travel to Burma. Our Department of Foreign Affairs seems to following the American State Department in recommending no trade or tourist travel to Burma because of human rights abuses and authoritarian government. This in spite of both nation's enthusiasm about travel to China or Indonesia where human rights abuses are of a different order in numbers and kind. Happily, I came across a brochure in Britain for

Well, eyebrows raised and scholars scoffed. Then our overworked minister further slipped on his tongue in a letter to the National Post referring to Canada's moment of First World War glory at Vimy Ridge as Vichy, the Nazi-occupied town in Central France. Care for a side of vimyssoise with your plate of crow, John? Some people reacted generously to McCallum's gaffes. McGill-Queen's University Press extended an educating hand by sending him a bushel of books on Canada's military endeavours. This fit of sympathetic largesse was thought up by MQUP publicist Dan Werb after the initial Dieppe admission. "I couldn't believe our Defence Minister knew nothing of Canadian military history," says Werb, adding, "It makes sense - he's been a banker for years. "This gift of books is then both a tool for the minister as well as a symbolic gesture to remind Canadians of the importance of understanding and exploring Canada's history and culture," says Werb, adding that, "to know your past is to be able to move towards the future."

Canada's Regions and the War
The West, Ontario, the Maritimes, Newfoundland Quebec
The West, Ontario, the Maritimes, Newfoundland
Canada's federal and regional nature has prompted a number of useful examinations of the war. For Nova Scotia, the explosion of the munitions ship Mont Blanc in Halifax harbour, killing over 1 600 outright and maiming and blinding thousands more, was perhaps the defining event of the war. Newfoundland was not yet a part of Canada and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's experience, first at Gallipoli and then being virtually wiped out at Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme, provided a unique facet of the war. Joy Cave's book examines the impact of such catastrophic losses on the tiny Newfoundland outports. Armstrong, John G. Canadian Reflections

It's easier to understand Canada today if you know something of our past, something of how we got to the present. This series of articles by various writers recounts chapters of our heritage in a very readable fashion.
Celebrating Canada

Believing that too often we take too much for granted in Canada, Legion Magazine's editors created this series to explore the nature of this grand land. From people to places, from business to industry, we chronicle natural wonders and significant achievements.
He who ignores history is said to be doomed to repeat it. In our memoirs, participants tell their stories of events big and small. And in pilgrimages, we recount Canada's military achievements through visits to our overseas battlefields and memorials.
Military Matters

We keep tabs on the Canadian Forces today in a budget-conscious era where there is a constant struggle for enough defence dollars, the right equipment, realistic taskings, and adequate pay and benefits.

Imperial Austria: Treasures of Art, Arms and Armor from the State of Styria

Ruled by the Hapsburg dynasty from the Late Middle Ages to the early twentieth century, Austria has long been one of the great cultural and political centres of Europe. As a gateway between East and West, this strategic region was often forced to defend its land, its culture, and its religion against outside invaders. Canada and Submarine Warfare, 1909-1950
An essay exploring the influence of submarine warfare on the development of the Canadian forces prior to 1939, the impact of earlier experience on Canadian participation in the Second World War, and in turn how the course of that conflict shaped Canada's maritime forces in the post-war era The Salvation Army
War and training for war are draining physical, psychological, and emotional experiences. For those Canadians serving overseas or in Canada, the Salvation Army tried to establish a degree of civility - a 'touch of home', perhaps - amidst the loneliness and dehumanizing conditions of war. To a remarkable degree, the Salvation Army formed an integral part of Canadians' military experiences during two world wars. NATO: A Pledge for Peace
Twelve nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Pearson noted that Canadians felt that the treaty is ''a pledge for peace and progress''.
