CANADIAN CULTURE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS TORONTO, March 22, 2001 – Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today inaugurated the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), a unique gateway featuring innumerable stories and treasures entrusted to Canadian museums. Thanks to this Internet project made possible with the help more than 600 participants, scanned works of art will be more accessible than ever to all Canadians. The inauguration of the VMC took place at the Art Gallery of Ontario. “In the 21st century, the most powerful broadcasting tool at our disposal is the Internet. We can use it to preserve, make known, and pass along our Canadian heritage,” declared Minister Copps. “This virtual museum will assist museums in their mandate by facilitating access to their collections. It will create, broadcast and educate. One click and we will be able to explore exhibits, visit the Websites of hundreds of Canadian museums, gain access to an activities calendar and to a gallery containing over 200,000 images.” Among other things, this gateway will allow museums to provide teachers with a turnkey tool to inform students about the extent and richness of Canada’s heritage. Among the exhibits proposed by the VMC for its inauguration are: Hockey: A Nation’s Passion; Inuit 3D; Champlain: Travels in the Canadian Francophonie; Yukon Photographers: The Gold Rush Era, 1897-1900; Athena’s Heirs; Remembering the Black Loyalists, Black Communities in Nova Scotia; and exhibit games such as Dinosaur Prospector and the Cariboo Gold Rush Adventure Game.

Debate over whether it was Skookum Jim or Carmack himself who made the initial discovery rages today. Carmack claims he made the first discovery, while the Jim and Charley state he was sleeping and that they found the gold. However, it was George who traveled to Fortymile to register the claims for all three men. An earlier discovery in Alaska proved there was gold in the north, and many former fur traders The bevy of activity brought William Ogilvie to the area in January 1897. Ogilvie was a government surveyor who eventually established the boundaries between Canada and Alaska; it was his job to ensure that each claim fell within legal limits of 500 feet, and that each were mapped and measured correctly. Utterly aware of the fever surrounding Bonanza and its tributary, Eldorado, Ogilvie, on more than one occasion, tried to warn Ottawa of the situation. But it wasn't until "Klondike" became a household word that the Canadian government realized the complexity of the situation.

THE CANADIAN NORTH
All sorts of images come to mind when one thinks of the Canadian North. Once the domain of a few Aboriginal communities living in extremely difficult living conditions, those Territories have attracted many adventurers and missionaries over the years, followed by an entire non-Aboriginal population from southern Canada, lured here by government jobs and the rich gold mines near Great Slave Lake. Far to the north, above British Columbia, is a region where glaciers lie nestled between high peaks. Here, the great Yukon River originates in inland Tagish Lake, and seems to take sly pleasure in turning its back on the sea, heading north before forking off to the west, into Alaska. Fed by waters from many tributaries along the way, it finally flows into Bering Strait after travelling almost 3,200km. Aboriginals called it the "great river," or Yukon , in their language. Approximately 35,500 people live in the Yukon, mostly in the southern part of the territory. The native community is comprised of about 7,000 people. English is the most common language. Over 23,000 Yukonites live in the capital, Whitehorse. The three other major towns in the territory (1,500 to 3,000 residents) are Dawson, Watson Lake and Faro. The rest of the population is dispersed among some 20 towns and hamlets, some of which are no more than a cluster of buildings. The Yukon's modern history begins in 1825 when John Franklin explored its north shore. The Hudson's Bay Company proceeded to set up fur-trading posts around 1840. Canada affirmed its sovereignty over the territory in 1895, sending in a Mountie detachment just in time to keep the Americans from doing likewise. The gold rush began in 1896, following the discovery of gold in the Klondike. This led to a demographic boom which lasted until 1904. Once the frenzy subsided, however, the total population dropped to under 5,000 inhabitants until the construction of the

Romanian gold rush By Gabriel Nitulescu The words "gold rush" resemble for many the images in the American movies with crowds of adventurers rushing towards California or Alaska. Most of them never fulfilled their dream of becoming incredible rich and, on contrary, became poorer than they were when they left for the gold mirage. However, they had accomplished something: they put the basis for towns that subsequently prospered and became world metropolis. The Romanian golden rush is different. It began 2000 years ago and does not fit these Hollywood patterns. Decebal, Habsburgs, and the gold price Revival through joint ventures The other state-owned mining companies like Minvest Deva (the former Copper Autonomous Administration of Deva) had foreign offers, too. With 1.8 millions tons of ore, the annual gold and silver output (about 3.6 tons of useful metal), this was a company larger than its sister in Baia Mare. In fact, the two state-owned companies were dividing among themselves the scanty resources. None of them had the necessary financial resources for investing in equipment and geological prospects. Because of old equipment and processing methods, and also because of overstaffed work, Minvest had overall expenses of 8,000 lei for each 1,000 lei as output in 1998. From the point of view of the foreign investor, Minvest was valuable because of its infrastructure: roads, galleries, utilities (water, electric power). Under these circumstances, it managed to attract two investors: Gabriel Resources (Australian - Canadian company) and Castel Europa (which is Canadian, despite its name).

"It was a super-human effort to transport those thousands of pounds up that narrow, slippery, rocky trail of the Pass, through boulder-strewn canyons, across swampy bottomlands."
Martha Louise Black, Stampeder. The twenty-six mile trail over Chilkoot Pass was steep and hazardous. Most stampeders who gave up did so attempting to cross the mountains. In the winter, stampeders struggled in blizzards, snow, frigid temperatures, and avalanches. The trail shot up about 1,000 feet in the final half mile. Stampeders climbed the "golden staircase," 1,500 steps cut in the snow and ice, and used a guide rope for support. Circa 1898. Detail from Cantwell 33. Robert Henderson (1857-1933)
The discovery of placer gold in the Klondike a century ago set off one of the world's greatest gold rushes and forever changed the history of the Yukon Territory and Canada. Though controversy still exists as to who made the discovery, it is agreed that four men sparked the stampede: George Carmack, the son of an American forty-niner; his Tagish Indian partners, Skookum Jim Mason and Tagish Charlie; and prospector Robert Henderson of Nova Scotia.
In the summer of 1896, Carmack and his native partners were at a fish camp at the junction of the Yukon and Klondike rivers. None could imagine that events to follow would transform their tranquil wilderness into a booming city of 30,000 in just two years.
During a visit to the camp, Henderson told Carmack of some promising "colors" he had found while panning in Gold Bottom Creek. Carmack asked if he could stake claims nearby, as was the custom. Henderson replied that Carmack was welcome, but that his Indian friends were not.
A week or so later, Carmack and his partners checked out Henderson's showing, which didn't impress them. During the brief visit, Henderson further offended Jim and Charlie by refusing to sell them tobacco. His prejudices would ultimately cost him a fortune.
