Citizens for a Canadian Republic, founded yesterday, issued a blunt if awkwardly timed challenge to domestic monarchists intent on protecting Canada's status as a constitutional monarchy: Get with the times and move beyond the "archaic" concept of peerage and inherited rights in government. Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of Canada and the official head of state; the Queen delegates her power, rooted in symbol rather than function, to the Governor-General of Canada. "We can't select our own head of state. The symbolic implication is significant. It's really the last thread of colonialism," Tom Freda, a founding executive member, said. The Monarchist League of Canada, founded in 1971, has dominated discussions about the role of the Crown in Canada. The new organization, which has yet to establish provincial chapters or hold executive elections, represents the first attempt to pull together anti-monarchist sentiment in Canada. It postponed the announcement last week after the Queen Mother died, but yesterday weighed in on a highly emotional debate. Recent polls suggest Canadians are evenly split over whether to keep the monarchy, except in Quebec, where the majority consistently express opposition to the institution.

Announcements Editorial By Rupinder Brar In this, the 50th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the second, the time has come for the Republic of Canada to rise from the Dominion. Canada is currently a constitutional monarchy. That is, though we govern ourselves, a monarch reigns over us. The simple fact is that the head of Canada is an unelected non-Canadian. Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of Canada, our head of state, because she was the first born to a particular family in a far off land. She has done nothing in deeds or words to receive this job; Canadians did not choose her. This is wrong. For many reasons Canada needs a Canadian head of state, a person not affiliated with any political party or agenda, who represents the people of Canada, where the Prime Minister represents the government. We need someone to represent our values and ideals, our traditions and unique experiences, and our cultural diversity. This task is not possible for a British monarch who is the head of state for 15 other countries, first and foremost Great Britain. In recent years polls have indicated that a growing slim majority (including a huge majority of Quebecers) of Canadians would be willing to cut Canada off from the British monarchy once the Queen's reign is complete. Just over one-third oppose this and the rest simply do not care. Those that don't care need to realize that a Canadian republic would be a valuable goal for all Canadians and Canada as a nation.

THE POLITICS OF MONARCHY: IT'S NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT EXPECT Canadian Forum Magazine April, 1998 Tony Hall The news that powerful forces are at work in Australia to sever ties with the British monarchy has emboldened a few voices in Canada to promote similar measures here. For instance, in his weekly column in The Globe and Mail , editor William Thorsell urges his fellow citizens to just grow up and "cut the apron strings" to the "ridiculous anomaly" that is our Royal Mom - the Queen of England. All that is required of us, he explains, is to replace the Windsors with a made-in-Canada imprimatur, and "presto, we are wholly adult at last." My central fascination with the subject has to do with the importance of maintaining constitutional continuity integral to the renewal of treaties with Indigenous peoples. I view imperial agreements with the First Nations as the only truly legitimate starting point for all non-Aboriginal claims of title and sovereign jurisdiction to the lands and waters of Canada. The debate over the place of the Crown is pivotal because it exposes so clearly how completely most activists on the right wing of politics, including Mr. Thorsell, have renounced the indigenous conservatism whose royalist hues were once so essential to the decorative tones of the Tory Party in Canada, Red, Blue or Purple. The real agenda of this steady assault on the institutions of the Crown, however, was to interate Canada more fully into the American empire and the presidential style of marketplace politics. What motivated Grant and others was this practical recognition that the real threat to Canada's independence was not the British legacy in our constitution but rather the expansionist thrust of Manifest Destiny in the United States. In the early 1960s, WL Morton, the great historian of Manitoba, devoted particular attention to clarifying both the historic and continuing significance of the Canadian monarchy. For the architects of Confederation, Morton argued, the structuring of the new Dominion on the British monarchy was not some "bait for dim-witted Tory voters" but rather "the essence of the scheme".

Such blatant republicanism from a minister of the crown is reprehensible at the best of times and during a visit from our Queen, it is beyond reproach. The apology for his insult came five days too late and was both evasive and insincere. Canada loves Her Majesty but it is her office we stand for, not just her person. The finance minister could not support the woman and could not support the throne.
