    Aboriginal Claims in Canada
Aboriginal Claims: An Introduction
Treaties
First Nations in Canada have signed agreements with the Crown, called treaties. There are three groups of treaties: Pre-Confederation Treaties, Numbered Treaties, and Modern Treaties (Land Claims). Pre-Confederation Treaties include: King George III's Royal Proclamation of 1763 and those treaties negotiated in Canada before Confederation. Also included are The Robinson Treaty of 1850 (Treaty No. 13) and the additions to The Robinson Treaty which are known as Treaty No. 12 and Treaty No. 14. Numbered Treaties are the Treaties numbered 1 to 11 which were negotiated between 1871 and 1877 with First Nations peoples across Canada. The third group of treaties are known as Modern Treaties , which consist of land claims negotiated according to Canada's Land Claims Policy established in 1973. The Land Claims Policy recognizes two broad classes of claims - comprehensive claims and specific claims.
Comprehensive Claims
Comprehensive land claims are based on the assertion of continuing Aboriginal title to lands and natural resources. Comprehensive claims settlements are negotiated to clarify the rights of Aboriginal groups to lands and resources, in a manner that will facilitate their economic growth and self-sufficiency. Settlements are intended to ensure that the interests of Aboriginal groups in resource management and environmental protection are recognized, and that claimants share in the benefits of development.

Some of the Loggie family history, or the only part of the recorded history is found in court records of the day. They may have been fighting for the correct rightful cause, and that fact not recorded, it depended on who was in power. A William J Loggie Thought to be a Lawyer did some research into the name of Logie. The main reason William J was doing this research was to collect information in an attempt to establish which tartan, if any, the Logie’s were entitled to wear. A summary of the paper, of eight typewritten pages by William J, is that there is no one known Logie tartan, but there are probably a number they could wear, because they were in many battles. Extract from Bain's Index. No date but probably about 1200 A.D.: -

Some Notes on Passenger Ship Lists
Pictou County, Nova Scotia GenWeb Return to Main Page of Pictou County GenWeb
Searching for an ancestor arrival via passenger ship can be a frustrating exercise as few passenger lists have survived to this day. In J.M. Bumsted's book, The People's Clearance, an appendix was drawn up listing the known ships sailing to North America containing Scots between 1770 and 1815. The following statistics are derived from the appendix: Number of known passenger ships carrying Scots to British North America: 113
Number of those 113 passsenger ships arriving at Pictou: 30
Number of those 30 passenger ships for which the ship's name is unknown: 11
Number of those 30 ships for which a passenger list is known to exist: 4 Many lists were drawn up for the purpose of determining passenger fares. For that reason, some lists are organized by age of passenger, and not by familial linkage. Some lists were drawn up from memory. In the case of the Hector which arrived in 1773, the passenger list was drawn up from memory years after the voyage.
