The Book Chain in Cameroon By Rosemary M. Shafack and Kiven Charles Languages and literacy Looking at the book chain in Cameroon it is immediately apparent that a majority of books and other reading materials produced and/or consumed in Cameroon are in either French or English. In 1961, when the former Southern Cameroons (under British trusteeship) and East Cameroon (under French trusteeship) came together as the Federal Republic of Cameroon, the cultural identity of the two former colonies was retained, and thus the bilingual culture was born and has been maintained in varying degrees. Politically and legislatively, all publications in Cameroon for state or governmental purposes must be produced in both English and French. The Cameroon educational system is a three-tier system, with English being the medium of instruction in the anglophone provinces and French being the medium of instruction in the francophone provinces, though any individual or institution is allowed to use either of the two official languages in any of the provinces as the need arises. This is noticeable in the bilingual secondary and high schools that were initially established at provincial level but have now opened at divisional and sub-divisional levels in all ten provinces. Publishing The policy of bilingualism in schools means that all books published for educational purposes are produced in both English and French. There are legislative and regulatory documents guiding the production and distribution of school books. A

Country Info Cameroon Introduction Cameroon General Data Cameroon Maps Cameroon Culture ... Cameroon Time and Date Cameroon History Back to Top The coast of present-day Cameroon was explored late in the 15th century by the Portuguese, who named the estuary to the south of Cameroon Mountain Rio das Camerões (“river of prawns”). Merchants established trading stations along the coast in the 17th century, buying slaves, ivory, and rubber. British traders and missionaries were especially active in the area after 1845. The Germans and British began to explore inland after 1860, and in 1884 the former established a protectorate over the Douala area; the British, taken by surprise, offered no resistance to their claim. After World War II ended in 1945, the mandates were made trust territories of the United Nations (UN). In the following years political ferment grew enormously in the French territory, where more than 100 parties were formed between 1948 and 1960. The campaign for independence, intermittently violent, gained steady momentum during the 1950s, until the French granted self-government in December 1958; full independence was achieved on January 1, 1960. Ahmadou Ahidjo, prime minister since 1958, became the first president. The new republic was admitted to the UN in September 1960. When Cameroon became independent, President Ahidjo’s government was faced with a rebellion incited by the Cameroonian People’s Union, a pro-Communist party. By 1963, however, the revolt had been suppressed, and Ahidjo soon established the authority of his regime. In 1966 the six major parties merged into the National Cameroonian Union, which was declared the only legal party in the country. In 1972 Ahidjo sponsored a national referendum that changed Cameroon from a federal to a unitary state, called the United Republic of Cameroon.

Sounds of Silence
Where do elephants come from?
That question has mystified African wildlife watchers for centuries. These people were not wondering about elephant reproduction, mind you. They were questioning the uncanny "luck" elephants seemed to have in popping up at just the right time and in just the right place.
In fact, at times, elephants almost seem clairvoyant when it comes to synchronizing their social activities. Anecdotes abound about their psychic timing. In one report, a researcher watched a young bull stride confidently down a trail, then suddenly whirl around and vanish into the bush. Minutes later, a large, rival bull charged over a distant hill. Another group of scientists reported trailing a small herd of female elephants for weeks, never seeing hide nor tusk of a male. All that changed as soon as one of the females entered estrus, and bulls came pouring in from all directions. In other accounts, whole families seemed to choreograph their movements with the precision of synchronized swimmers. One researcher watched a line of elephants plod forward in single file. Suddenly, they all stopped, raised their ears and turned their heads in unison, as if bound together by invisible strings. With precision, the entire group then spun around and ran off in a new direction.
People lucky enough to see these odd happenings usually respond in one of two ways. Some pooh-pooh the events as mere coincidence. Others suspect, whether they admit it or not, that elephants possess some kind of supernatural power. It turns out that neither of these explanations is correct. Coincidence has nothing to do with the movements. Elephants can and do coordinate their activities over incredible distances. On the other hand, elephants do not rely on telepathy to orchestrate these movements over time and space.
