On its territory are found cohabiting, mingling and intermingling all the major cultures and traditions of sub-Saharan Africa, namely: the Bantu cultures of the forest, highland and great lakes regions, not leaving out those of southern Africa etc, the Sudano-Sahelian cultures of the grassfield savannas, the Adamawa plateaux, the sandy plains and hot regions of the Sahel as well as all the intermediate varieties or "shades" such as the nomadic and pygmy cultures. A quick overview of Cameroon's cultural landscape sprawling from the Atlantic coast to Lake Chad makes it possible to distinguish and better highlight a number of major cultural spheres, each with its own original and specific features. These include the coastal region, the Bantu forest region, the grassfields and the northern region. The coastal or sawa culture Cameroon's coast stretches over close to 400km from Rio del Rey on the western border with Nigeria to Campo near the border with Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and is inhabited by such peoples as the Dualas, Bakweris, Bakokos and Batangas all of whom belong to the coastal Sawa Culture.

Cameroon INFORMATION FOR 2002-03 Dschang Stretching from the fringes of the Sahara in the north to the borders of Congo and Gabon in the south, Cameroon is a striking study in diversity. The country’s four distinct geographic regions encompass everything from lush rain forests to rugged volcanic peaks, from spectacular waterfalls to the cruel beauty of the desert landscape. And Cameroon’s ethnic make-up is no less varied than its geography: The north is populated by Hausa, Fulbé, Sudanese, and Choa Arab peoples; in the west the Bamiléké are the largest ethnic group, followed by the Tiker and the Bamoun; and the area south of the River Sanaga is home to several Bantu groups, among them, Fang, Ewondo, Boulou, Eton, Bassa, Bakoko, and Douala. Lay on top of that Cameroon’s colonial past of German, French, and British occupation and one begins to get a sense of the country’s complicated ethnic identity. The School for International Training’s (SIT) Cameroon Culture and Development Program is based in the small German-founded town of Dschang. The program devotes itself to examining several contrasting influences in this diverse country, including urban and rural sociological factors, colonial and independent historical heritages, Anglophone and Francophone cultural facets, and rain forest and desert geography. Other accommodations include hostels, private homes, small hotels and camping in the highlands of the Fulani. Language prerequisite: 3 recent semesters of college-level French and the ability to follow coursework in French. M ount Cameroon, West Africa's highest peak, stands like a giant sentinel, gazing out over the Gulf of Guinea on Africa's Atlan tic Coast Am ong it's legendary names is "Throne of Thunder," a fitting tribute to the powerful gods that are said to inhabit the mountain's inner core. Our group of ATA members and journalists approached the 'throne' shortly after one of its frequent volcanic eruptions, and the ribbons of cooled lava resembled grey frosting oozing from an enormous layer cake. The lava beds are evident from the main highway to Kribi and a hiking trail winds up and over them. The warning signs advised us to pay respect and to tread gently in this eco- sensitive area. Mount Cameroon's rugged peak is the crown jewel of a chain of volcanic mountains that are strung like a giant pearl necklace along the Cameroon Nigeria border. The range stretches from here all the way to the northern plains of Maroua, gateway to Waza National Park. Each February the popular ' Course of Hope.' attracts aspiring climbers to the area and we're told that, while the ascent is challenging, it's not dangerous or overly strenuous. Many other sights would amaze and impress us that day and in the week to follow. Speaking personally, this trip was by far the most complete tour of any ATA- African host country I had experienced to date. At its conclusion most travelers in our group were tired - and somewhat bedazzled - yet I enjoyed a feeling of solid accomplishment. Cameroon - Culture Overview The boundaries of Cameroon enclose such a variety of ethnic groups and natural environments that the country has been called "Africa in miniature." Cameroon's diversity has been influenced by three different colonial regimes, beginning with the Germans who ceded to France and Britain after World War I. When anticolonialist sentiments began to swell during the 1950s, Cameroonians began to take renewed pride in local customs, and cultural activities expanded in new directions. Official policy in the independent nation has been to avoid potential divisions between different ethnic groups through the deliberate cultivation of national unity. One important example of this effort is the Indomitable Lions, the wildly popular and internationally successful national soccer team that has players from many different ethnic groups and claims that its success is based on the cooperation between these Cameroonians of diverse background. French and English serve as the country's official languages, and competition between speakers of each produces political conflict. Yet Cameroon is an intricate tapestry of cultures in which people identify with societies that are defined by local languages and customs. Over 100 native languages fall into three basic groups: the Sudanic languages of the north, the Bantu languages of the south, and the semi-Bantu languages of the west. In the north the primary ethnic groups are the Fulani and Kirdi, while in the more densely populated south are the Bamileke, Bulu, Bamoun, Ewondo, Beti, Bassa, and Douala. The Douala population also extends into the west along with the Bakweri and Tikar people of the grasslands. Islam claims the allegiance of 15% of the population and the rest is divided between Christianity and traditional African religions.
