Lawrence Weschler [FN1] January 7, 1999, marked the twentieth anniversary of the demise of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, a genocidal regime that killed an estimated one-third of the Cambodian population in less than four years of rule. [FN2] Two decades later, the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge have yet to be examined by an impartial authority [FN3] and Cambodian politics remain turbulent, impeding the peaceful development of Cambodian civil society. These two phenomena arguably are linked; until the Cambodian government and the international community develop a policy to repair the damage inflicted by the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodian people will be unable to live in a peaceful society. In order for Cambodian society to heal, the full truth about the Khmer Rouge regime must be examined and disseminated, creating a history that Cambodians can teach to their children. [FN4] While a strong case can be made for the need to prosecute the members of the Khmer Rouge, [FN5] an international tribunal for Cambodia may be most effective if limited to the prosecution of top leaders. Cambodia's Main Page
Cambodia's History Returning from abroad, a Khmer prince declared himself the ruler of a new kingdom during the 9th century. Known as Jayavarman II, he started a cult that honored Shiva, a Hindu god, as a devaraja (god-king) which then linked the king to Shiva. He also began the great achievements in architecture and sculpture while his successors built an immense irrigation system around Angkor.. His successors (26 from the early 9th to the early 15th century), built a tremendous number of temples - of which there are over a thousand sites and stone inscriptions (on temple walls).
By the 12th century, Cambodia had spread into other areas, now known as Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Malaysia (the peninsula). There is actually still evidence of Khmer inhabitance in Thailand and Laos to this day. The 13th and 14th centuries were not as successful for Cambodia, some believe it was due to the increased power of (and wars with) Thai kingdoms that had at one time paid homage to Angkor. Others believe it was due to the induction of Theravada Buddhism, which was totally contrary to the Cambodian societal structure at that time. After this time historical records are rather sketchy at best regarding Cambodia and it is considered the "Dark Ages" of Cambodian history. Cambodia was ravaged by Vietnamese and Thai invasions and wars up until the 19th century, when new dynasties in these countries fought over control of Cambodia. The war, that began in the 1830's almost destroyed Cambodia. King Norodom signed a treaty that enabled the French to be a protectorate, thus effectively stopping the Viet-Thai war within. For the next 90 years, France in essence ruled over Cambodia.

This invented passage from a student's essay uses MLA documentation to attribute quotations and paraphrases. Examples are given in red. At the end are links to Web pages with examples of citation for most items you will encounter (books, articles, reference works, online sources). Know you MLA format, as I will grade down for errors of citation. For decades, analysts of American foreign policy have debated the victories that communist insurgents operating in Southeast Asia enjoyed in the 1960s and 70s. One by one, it seemed to observers in the mid 70s, the nations known then as "the Asian Dominoes" were turning communist, even after the United States and France had fought costly wars to prevent that very outcome. There was no shortage of bravery among US allies; Albert notes that the ARVN troops fought well in many battles and were often more motivated to defend their homeland than the foreign soldiers who fought beside them . This came to naught, in the end; journalist Tex Marley

Not Just Victims
Conversations with Cambodian Community Leaders in the United States
Edited and with an Introduction by Sucheng Chan
Interviews Conducted by Audrey U. Kim
Not Just Victims contains twelve oral histories based on conversations with Cambodian community leaders in eight American citiesLong Beach, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, and the Massachusetts towns of Fall River and Lowell. Unlike the dozens of autobiographies published by Cambodians that focus largely on their victimization, these narratives describe how Cambodian refugees have adapted to life in the United States. Sucheng Chan's extensive introduction provides a historical framework; she discusses the civil war (1970-75), the bloody Khmer Rouge revolution (1975-79), the border war during the Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia (1979-89), and the additional travails faced by those who escaped to holding camps in Thailand. The book also includes an essay on oral history and a substantial bibliography. "

THE KILLING FIELDS (1984)
Historical Context: Print Video Online The Killing Fields [1] The historical facts behind The Killing Fields , a film first and foremost about the relationship between the journalists Dith Pran and Sydney Shanberg, can best be relayed by exploring the circumstances under which Pran and Schanberg met, namely, the Cambodian War. Sydney Schanberg Dith Pran [2] The roots of the Cambodian Revolution date back to 1840, when France first expressed interest in colonizing Cambodia – a goal eventually realized in 1884. France's placement of the young Prince Norodom Sihanouk on the Cambodian throne in 1941 (a man they believed would not pose a threat to their political power, but who eventually gained independence from France in 1953) played a key role in the development of the Cambodian Revolution. Sihanouk’s commitment to remaining neutral in regard to the Vietnam War, combined (oddly enough, considering his neutrality) with his tendency to fluctuate between “left” and “right” political positions and actions, essentially split Cambodia, and fostered the Khmer Rouge’s ability to obtain dedicated communist followers. [3] In 1970, while Sihanouk vacationed in France, Lon Nol (Sihanouk’s Prime Minister) launched an anti-Communist and anti-Vietnamese campaign to counter Sihanouk’s inconsistencies. On March 18th, Nol staged a coup d’etat, thereby gaining recognition from America and the global community as Cambodia’s new leader. Lon Nol’s first goal while in rule was to rid his nation of the Vietnamese “sanctuaries” that Sihanouk, for monetary reasons, allowed to exist. President Nixon and Prime Minister Kissenger embraced this objective and, without Nol’s consent, planned a 60-day invasion of Cambodia to begin on April 30, 1970.
