1-27-03: Hot Topics A Theory About Pyramids that Could Change the Way We Write the History of the New World and the Old
By Robert M. Schoch and Robert Aquinas McNally
Mr. Schoch, a full-time faculty member at the College of General Studies at Boston University since 1984, earned his Ph.D. in geology and geophysics at Yale University. Mr. McNally is a writer and poet whose early education in classical Latin blossomed into a lifelong fascination with ancient civilization and mythology. They are the authors of Voyages of the Pyramid Builders (Tarcher/Putnam, 2003). When most of the academics trained in the study of the ancient world look at pyramids on different continents, they see proof of humankind's division into distinct, separate civilizations. We see something quite the opposite: compelling evidence of the underlying unity of civilization.
At its most extreme, the orthodox viewpoint goes something like this. Civilization dates to no earlier than the middle fourth millennium B.C. It began in Mesopotamia, then spread to Egypt, and subsequently throughout the Old World. Other civilizations arose on their own - and much later - in the Americas, where they remained disconnected from Asia and Africa until Columbus piloted his three small ships across the Atlantic. The Old World and the New World each invented civilization independently.
I (Schoch) first came to understand there was something wrong with this view while investigating the origins of the Great Sphinx of Giza. As a geologist, I knew that the weathering patterns of the Giza plateau indicated that the Sphinx was carved in stages. In addition, the oldest portions went back much farther than the conventional 2500 B.C. date given the sculpture; the earliest part most likely predates 5000 B.C.

It was built in the middle of the 12th century as a replica of the Hindu religion. The construction took more than thirty years. Lately, during the 15th century, it was converted into a Buddhist temple. At that time the flourishing Khmer civilization covered much of SE Asia. The Angkorian period lasted from the early 9th century to the early 15th century. Carving of a Khmer woman in black stone
Khmer warriors: Carved stories of ancient military clashes One of the main entrances to Angkor Wat The stone construction of palaces and temples covering an area of more than 60 km required thousands of workers and technicians. It is clear that the Khmer state possessed a significant strong army and had a large central administration. The stone carvings manifest the grandeur of such an ancient Asian culture. The impressive stone buildings were the focus of Hindu and Buddhist religious ceremonies. They had a dual function of both temple and tomb. The Angkor Wat ruins are located about 12 km near the town of Siemreab.

Excavating the Delta By Miriam Stark At twenty-seven hundred miles, the Mekong River is one of the world’s longest rivers. It flows through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and its delta is one of world’s great rice-growing regions. Along the western edge lies Angkor Borei, a town that archaeologists hope may hold a key to Cambodia’s ancient history. An international team of archaeologists at work there has found ancient pots and glass beads, and recently, an ancient cemetery containing forty-five human skeletons that may date as far back as 200 B.C. Many Cambodians consider Angkor Borei the cradle of their civilization. In one Cambodian creation story, an Indian Brahmin priest named Preah Thaong left India for Southeast Asia and arrived at the Mekong Delta. There he encountered the beautiful princess Soma cavorting at the shore. She was the daughter of the king of the nagas, or serpents living beneath the ocean. The princess and the priest fought for control of the region; he defeated her, and they fell in love and married. It is said that King Preah Thaong introduced Hindu customs, legal traditions, and the Sanskrit language to the population. It is also said that he “drank the waters” that covered the land which may have signified draining parts of the delta for farming and gave the people a kingdom that he called Kambuja. The Mekong Delta is flat, low-lying, and prone to flooding; geographers believe that during ancient times it was easily farmed through rice agriculture.

Cambodia Links - Teddy's Journal [ Phnom Penh - Ian's Journal [ Phnom Penh Sick Cambodia Introduction Cambodia was the home of the greatest ancient kingdom in Southeast Asia. The predominant Khmer people ruled most of mainland Southeast Asia about nine hundred years ago. Recently, Cambodia has gained infamy throughout the world for the terrifying reign of Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot. He attempted to turn Cambodia into a "peasant utopia" in 1975, code named "year zero", and his number one task was eliminating all remnants of western influence. This meant bombing bridges, railroads, banks (there was no need for money in a communist society), and most jarring of all the deaths of over 3 million of his countrymen. While most Cambodians who died during this time starved to death, many thousands were executed for having western influence. Workers, docters, diplomats, farmers, foreigners, teachers, engineers, technicians, intellectuals, and even students were all murdered for being "traitors to the revolution." In one grisly incident, Cambodian students who had been studying abroad in Paris were flown back to "help rebuild" their country. When they exited the plane, they were taken to a hanger off the tarmac and gunned down. Wearing glasses, being related to an accused prisoner, or sometimes even having lighter skin meant death and often torture.

by Teddy In 1860, French explorer Henri Mouhot hacked his way through the Cambodian jungle to “rediscover” the ancient temple of Angkor Wat. By 1908, the French had set up a restoration society but in 1972 all works restoring the ancient palace grounds was called off because of the escalating violence of Cambodia’s civil war. Now, in February of the year 2000, us five college guys along with hundreds of other tourists get a chance to explore this monumental stone city. Where do the Cambodians fit into all of this? Even when Mouhot uncovered this “lost city” in the 19th century, the Cambodians were visiting the site as a Buddhist pilgrimage stop. The romanticized story of a white explorer with his pith helmet and team of lackey’s hacking is way through jungle to find an undiscovered civilization is a false representation of history. Due to repeated attacks by Thais, the city was abandoned in 1430. The jungle environment , fed by the six month rain cycle of the monsoon season, quickly reclaimed the clearings that had been made.

http://www.innovasian.com/cambodia/
With a population of ten million people, Cambodia is in the early stages of rebuilding the nation after years of civil unrest. It is a country with a rich history of artistic and agricultural innovation that spread throughout most of Southeast Asia. Bordered by Laos and Thailand in the north, Vietnam to the east and the Gulf of Thailand to the west, Cambodia maintains a warm tropical climate year round. Having officially reopened its doors to tourism in 1991, visitors from around the world can now marvel at the wonders of the ancient City of Angkor. Phnom Penh, the present-day capital of Cambodia, is a city in the process of rebuilding its commercial infrastructure and contains many sights of both cultural and historical significance. The pink sandstone National Museum houses a sizable collection of sculpture and artifacts from the ancient Khmer civilization. Those fortunate enough to tour the Grand Palace will be treated to the brilliant Silver Pagoda and the elaborate murals on the ceiling of the Coronation Hall. Other legendary sights include the Tuol Sleng Museum and the memorial at Choeung Ek dedicated to the people of Cambodia. A short flight from Phnom Penh brings us to the small town of Siem Reap, located on the northern banks of the Tonle Sap Great Lake. Just north of Siem Reap lies the magnificent City of Angkor. Unequivocally one of the wonders of the ancient world, the temples of Angkor cover a vast area of over 25 square miles, considered to have once been the largest city in the world. The Angkor period lasted from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries and Angkor Wat itself is said to have taken 37 years to build with construction completed in 1150.

Archaeological findings prove that civilization existed in Shenzhen, now a coastal boomtown in south China's Guangdong Province, as early as 3,500 years ago.
Chinese archaeological workers discovered 94 ancient graves belonging to the Shang Dynasty (circa 16th Century B.C.-11th Century B.C.) and 300 precious cultural relics of different kinds while excavating Wubeiling Ruins at Nanshan from April to June 2001 and from December 2001 to March 2002.
Cultural relics unearthed from the ancient graves include jade articles, stone implements, pottery, as well as bronze tools for production.
They were recently selected as one of China's ten major archaeological finds of 2001.
The ruins fall within Shenzhen's planned town for universities, said a local official in charge of the administration of cultural relics, who also added they were considering building a museum based on the ruins.

Detailed plans and descriptions unravel the complex reliefs of Angkor Wat and the Bayon, while small but interesting temples not covered in other books are also described. from "Ancient Wisdom for Modern Ignorance."
By Swami B.V. Tripurari. Clarion Call Publishing 1994. Here is a fascinating piece of information about Hindus and Mayans connection. According to Ambassador Poindexter, in his two volume 1930s treatise "The Arya-Incas", called the Mayan civilization was 'unquesionably Hindu' in origin. Alexander von Humbolt (1769-1859) an eminent, European scholar and anthropologist, was one of the first to postulate the Asiatic origin of the Indian civilizations of the Americas. What mysterious pyschological law would have caused Asians and Americans to both use the umbrella as a sign of royalty, to invent the same games, imagine similar cosmologies, and attribute the same colors to the different directions? The Aryan civilization of India is a logical choice for the beginning of the diffusion of our planet's civilization. American historian Will Durant, in his book 'Our Oriental Heritage', described India as the most ancient civilization on earth, and he offered many examples of Indian culture through out the world. He demonstrated that as early as the 9th century B.C. E. Indians were exploring the sea routes, and reaching out and extending their cultural influences to Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Egypt. Most modern day historians prefer to accept ancient Egypt and Babylon, as the most ancient civilization. Because they have no living representation and thereby pose no threat to the status quo.

Ancient History The Khmer or Angkor Civilization came into existence during the period from 802 to 1431 A.D. and stretched as far as the modern Thailand-Burma Border in the west and Wat Phou of Laos in the north during its peak. The centre of the Khmer Civilization is in the Angkor Wat area which is situated on the plain of present-day Siem Reap province north of the Great Lake of Tonle Sap Angor Wat and the other temples were built to represent the power of the empire. Created by a succession of kings, the temples of Angkor Tom (which includes Angkor Wat) span nine square km. Jayavarman VII, the son of Suryavarman II, who built Angkor Wat itself, built most of the temples during his reign from 1181-1220. Angkor Wat and its then surrounding City of Angkor, flourished and the ancient Khmer rulers developed a water irrigation system here using the water from the mighty
