Introduction Angkor protect History of Angkor Nobility in stone ... Unesco boat tourism New Clues to Angkor's Secrets Recent discoveries of ancient kilns in the Angkor area are causing a stir among professional archaeologists and amateurs alike. Local villagers may have known about these ancestral sites for centuries, but only now has their existence been brought to the attention of the outside world. One of the first sites was revealed by chance during the construction of a new road, the tractor unearthing layer after layer of ancient pottery shards. A de-mining team, clearing land of mines for farmers to plant rice and build schools, was the first to report other sites to national and international scientific authorities. Though this may be far from the thoughts or planned objectives of development agencies, international founders or private investors, increased knowledge of Cambodia's past may prove to be one of the most important benefits of nascent economic and political stability. What first appeared to be isolated kilns are in fact turning out to be whole centres of ceramic production. At least three different sites have so far been identified to the northeast of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Set amongst villages and rice fields, the kilns themselves appear to the naked eye as simple mounds - nothing more than natural variations in a typical Khmer landscape.

Few textbooks give more than a couple of paragraphs about the ancient Khmers, but this ancient civilization, which was centered in present-day Cambodia, has much to share. Meet rulers such as Jayavarman, Yasovarman, and Suryavarnam. Find out who built magnificent Angkor Wat and why. Discover how the Khmers built their reservoirs and why. Join them in the rice fields as they prepare their crop. Meet an anthropologist who describes how the temple statues provide clues to Khmers daily life. Meet Zhou Duguan, a Chinese diplomat, who left us an eyewitness account of his visit to the land of the Khmers. Learn about the graceful, dancing apsaras and how the tradition continues now today. We'll end with a peak at the excavation work going on today, as archaeologists struggle to save the precious treasures from looting and the ravages of time. See you in Cambodia!

Cambodia: Sanskrit Inscriptions
By J.F. Staal While the newspapers continue to tell us how in Vietnam, and now in Cambodia, people, animals, villages, farms, cities, crops, forests, and even the fish in the ocean are being destroyed, little information is given about the destruction of an ancient civilization. We do not know which temples and monasteries were destroyed and which books and manuscripts, sculptures and inscriptions have disappeared forever. A study of the history of the Sanskrit inscriptions from Cambodia alone may help us to understand a civilization that may soon be altogether lost. BACKGROUND (top) One of the world's sacred treasures, Angkor Wat is comparable in grandeur to the Pyramids in Egypt or the Great Wall of China and is a definite must stop for anyone who may think they have seen it all. In total, there are over a thousand temples, many of which have collapsed over the years with only subtle reminders of their existence. Some of the temples are still completely covered in jungle and are inaccessible. As of now, there are 39 temples that can visited by the public. The actions of King Jayavarman II became part of an honored tradition and when each new king was inaugurated, he would build a mountain temple. Some would build temples and lakes for ancestors as well. The new king would always install his own Devaraja cult and declare himself supreme ruler over the state, soil, people, and law. A good king brought prosperity for the people and ensured longevity for the society. At the same time, there were many women who held important positions in the Angkor period in all levels of government and economy. Angkor became the capital under the rule of Yasovarman I who reigned from 889-900. After this point, it served as the center of Khmer society for the next 500 years. Also during this time, the Thais built up a great mass of people and captured a wide swath of land, which is now modern day Thailand. They were persistent invaders of Khmer territory and, in 1353, captured Angkor. The Khmers ultimately recaptured Angkor but continued to fight with the Thais for the next hundred years.

There are two great complexes of ancient ruins in southeast Asia, one at Bagan, Burma, the other at Angkor in Cambodia. The temples of Angkor, built from 879 - 1191AD, when the Khmer civilization was at the height of its development, represent one of humankind's most astonishing and enduring architectural achievements. From the great citadel of Angkor, the kings of the Khmer empire ruled over a vast domain that reached from what is now southern Vietnam to Yunan, China and from Vietnam westward to the Bay of Bengal. The structures one sees at Angkor today, more than 100 temples in all, are the surviving religious remains of a grand social and administrative metropolis whose other buildings - palaces, public buildings, and houses - were all built of wood and are long since decayed and gone.

Ancient civilizations hold a fascination for many people. I've been hooked since I first set eyes on a National Geographic that had photos from King Tut's tomb. My grandfather also had an extensive collection of arrowheads, which served to remind me that the US also had its own ancient civilizations. Very little is known about the Mound Builders of the Ohio Valley. The Serpent Mound is an incredible sight from the sky, but we can only speculate on why it was built. There are even a few effigy mounds in my hometown. If Indiana Jones inspired you, you're sure to find something of interest below.

Written by: Douglas Isbell, Mary Hardin New evidence of a prehistoric civilization and remnants of ancient temples in Angkor, Cambodia, have been discovered by researchers using highly detailed maps produced with data from an airborne imaging radar instrument created by NASA. Experts say the findings, made possible by the Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (AIRSAR) developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA, may revolutionize the way archaeologists view the ancient city's development. Angkor is a vast complex of some 1,000 temples covering about 100 square miles of northern Cambodia. Little is known of the prehistoric occupation of this fertile flood plain, but at its height the city housed an estimated population of one million people. The famous temples were built from the eighth to thirteenth century AD and were accompanied by a massive hydrological system of reservoirs and canals. Today, much of the civilization of Angkor is hidden beneath a dense forest canopy and is inaccessible due to poor roads, land mines and political instability. "The radar data have enabled us to detect a distribution of circular 'prehistoric' mounds and undocumented temples far to the northwest of Angkor," said Dr. Elizabeth Moore, Head of the Art and Archaeology Department at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. "The site's topography is highlighted by the radar, focusing our attention on previously neglected features, some at the very heart of the city.

The Post-Angkor Period

Introduction The civilization of the ancient Khmer in Cambodia is renowned for its extraordinary art and architecture of the sixth to the sixteenth centuries. Initially a collection of small kingdoms or city-states, Khmer society was increasingly consolidated over the course of the sixth century, when the earliest surviving works of sculpture were created. In the ninth century, Angkor emerged in the north as the capital of the unified kingdom of all "Kambuja," which gradually expanded into an empire encompassing much of present-day Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The three chief periods of Khmer civilization are defined in relation to this capital: pre-Angkor (before the 9th century), Angkor (9th-15th century), and post-Angkor (after the Thai invasion in 1431). The Khmer abandoned Angkor to the Thai in the fifteenth century and moved their capital south, near Phnom Penh, where they nonetheless preserved their cultural heritage. The Khmer empire created one of the world's most glorious traditions of sculpture and architecture. The hundreds of Hindu and Buddhist temples that were constructed at Angkor and throughout Cambodia reflect the strong influence of the culture and religions of India. In sculpture, Khmer artists demonstrated their technical mastery of stone carving and bronze casting, creating profoundly spiritual images of Hindu and Buddhist divinities. Most of the works of sculpture in this exhibition were made for temples and range from monumental cult statues to small offerings in bronze and narrative reliefs depicting scenes from Indian epics.

NASA Radar Reveals Hidden Remains At Ancient Angkor

Today, much of the civilization of Angkor is hidden beneath a dense forest canopy and is inaccessible due to poor roads, land mines and political instability. Like SIR-C/X-SAR, AIRSAR transmits and receives three radar frequencies in both horizontal and vertical polarizations. While both systems use C-band and L-band wavelengths, AIRSAR has the added benefit of P-band, a longer wavelength that can penetrate below the forest canopy. In addition, AIRSAR can be flown in a mode called TOPSAR that allows it to measure topography and create three-dimensional images of the surface.

Vietnam is bordered by the Red River Delta to the north and the Mekong River Delta to the south, the green coast of the South China Sea to the east, and Laos and Cambodia to the west. We will be overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country?s natural setting. With its two-thousand-years of culture and unbelievable recent history, Vietnam is now booming on its way to capitalism. Visitors senses will be thrilled by all the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of a society born of over a century of contact between an ancient civilization and the ways of the West. See recently opened Vietnam; be greeted with smiles by people who are extremely friendly to Americans; discover answers to all of our questions of the incredible recent history. We will still be amongst the pioneers in this land.
Cambodia?s Angkor is one of man?s greatest artistic achievements and still stands in silent testimony to the grandeur of a lost civilization. Angkor Wat is the best to show the huge incredible monument, one of the seven modern wonders of the world. Because of the heavenly heights of its towers, the grand scope and size of its sculpture, the science behind its architecture and construction, and the extraordinarily detailed narratives shown on its bas reliefs, Angkor Wat equals or surpasses just about any monument imaginable.
