Geography
Ranking third among the U.S. states in area, California has a diverse topography and climate. A series of low mountains known as the Coast Ranges extends along the 1,200-mi (1,930-km) coast. The region from Point Arena, N of San Francisco, to the southern part of the state is subject to tremors and sometimes to severe earthquakes caused by tectonic stress along the San Andreas fault . The Coast Ranges receive heavy rainfall in the north, where the giant cathedral-like redwood forests prevail, but the climate of these mountains is considerably drier in S California, and S of the Golden Gate no major rivers reach the ocean. Behind the coastal ranges in central California lies the great Central Valley , a long alluvial valley drained by the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. In the southeast lie vast wastelands, notably the Mojave Desert , site of Joshua Tree National Park. Rising as an almost impenetrable granite barrier E of the Central Valley is the Sierra Nevada range, which includes Mt. Whitney , Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park , and Yosemite National Park . The Cascade Range , the northern continuation of the Sierra Nevada, includes Lassen Volcanic National Park . Lying E of the S Sierra Nevada is Death Valley National Park Sacramento is the state capital. The largest cities are

4 units The course is organized around major themes in California geography: conquest and settlement, agriculture and resource extraction, industrial location and urbanization, and regional politics and schisms. Race and ethnicity run all throughout. The state's geography takes in a broad sweep of peoples, from the First Californians to a wide variety of immigrant and hyphenated Americans: Europeans, Middle Easterners, Asians, Mexicans and Central Americans, Africans. We look at the ways these many peoples have participated in the making of modern California over the last century: the using of its land, the shaping of its cities, the molding of government, and the creating of its industry. We also look at the ways industry, agribusiness, urbanization, and the state have used and abused people. To teach California as American cultures is not to change the story of the Golden State, but to get it right. READINGS R EQUIRED TEXTS

The History
Perhaps the most famous geographic myth is California shown as an island. The earliest maps of North America showed California as a peninsula, based on the reports of Francisco de Ulloa who explored the Bay of California in 1539. The famous maps by Gerard Mercator and Abraham Ortelius showed a correct depiction of California in the late sixteenth century, but that was to change early in the following century. In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino sailed up the California coast, and Father Antonio de la Ascension wrote a journal of the voyage. Ascension claimed that California was separated from the American continent by the “mediterranean Sea of California.” It is not clear where Ascension got this notion, but this claim led to the mapping of California as an island beginning in 1622 with a small map on the title page of Antonio de Herrera’s Descripcion de las Indias Occidentales . The first folio maps to show this myth were by Abraham Goos’ in 1624 and by Henry Brigg’s in 1625. However, it wasn’t until the more important commercial Dutch publishers accepted the insularity of California that this notion achieved universal acceptance. The first of these influential insular renderings was by Jan Jansson, whose map of North America from 1636 graphically displayed this myth, and this was soon followed by all other major publishers such as Nicolas Sanson, Guillaume Blaeu, Pierre Duval, and Herman Moll.

Destruction of the western American environment is the topic of a talk and slide show on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. by Richard Orsi, longtime writer and teacher of California history. His presentation, "The Rape of Eden: The Environmental Destruction of the American West," will examine the demise of the buffalo on the Great Plains of the western United States along with how environmental ideas and practices have been impacted by movement in the region. Orsi, for many years the editor of the quarterly magazine California History and a specialist on the state’s past, is a professor emeritus at Cal State Hayward. "Changing Geography of the California Wine Country" will be presented on Wednesday, March 6 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. by Herb Eder, a professor emeritus of geography for the university. His talk will focus on important changes of the last 20 years in the wine industry, including the rise in the quality of California wines in the context of changing relationships between the state’s and the world’s wine industries. Admission to the SCHOLAR lecture series is free. Parking permits purchased from dispensers are $1.50 for each lecture.

Check out my new website about California Geography. About CA Geography When you look in an encyclopedia or a book that shows California geography, look at all the regions that California has. California has a lot of regions, doesn't it? On the right is a picture of my relief map. We made these maps at the very beginning of the year. I hope you like it! The Regions of California When you look at my relief map, think about the different colors. Yellow=Desert Region, red=Pacific Coast, dark purple= Mountain Region, black=other, and finally, green=Central Valley region. This relief map is all about California geography.
On the right is a picture that I drew. It shows the four regions of California. The plants and the fruits represent the Central Valley region. The ocean represents the Pacific Coast region. The picture of the desert represents the Desert region, of course. The mountains represent the Mountain region. Please enjoy this web site. If you like games, look below. Welcome to the CA Geography Game Show that shows that you actually learned something. We want you to learn something, and you probably want to learn something yourself. Don't you?
