UCSF Fresno carries out its training and patient care charge through a network of affiliated partners. Residents have the opportunity to work in a variety of primary training sites with an impressive list of specialists at major hospitals, health agencies and programs, clinics, and individual physician's offices. In addition, Fresno County is the center of health care between Los Angeles and Sacramento. Acute care hospitals, the only Level 1 Trauma Center, a regional burn center, and numerous non-hospital programs serve a young and culturally heterogeneous population. University Medical Center (UMC) University Medical Center (formerly known as Valley Medical Center) has been a major teaching hospital in the Central Valley for more than 80 years. More than 40 percent of the physicians now practicing in the region received some internship or residency training at UMC. With the establishment of the UCSF-Fresno Medical Education Program in 1975, the hospital became formally affiliated with UCSF. UMC continues its long history and rich tradition of quality involvement in medical education. This large medical center provides inpatient and comprehensive outpatient services to people of all ages. Annually there are more than 10,000 admissions, about 4,500 major surgical procedures, 1,800 deliveries, and 200,000 outpatient and emergency department visits. Special hospital services at UMC include the highly acclaimed Regional Burn Center, a high-riskk maternity program, a center for chronic renal dialysis, and the only Level 1 Trauma Center located between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. UMC is the site for nearly two-thirds of UCSF-Fresno program post-doctoral training. A substantial volunteer clinical faculty augments its full-time physician faculty. | |
