Admissions and School Programs Grievances and Enforcement Return to Table of Contents The California State Education Code, the U.S. Constitution, the United States Education Act Amendments (Title IX), and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title IV), generally provide the basis for the legal rights which require equal opportunity for men and women in all aspects of education . These laws cover all public schools, including elementary schools, high schools, community colleges, vocational and professional schools, California state colleges and the university of California system. Laws prohibiting discrimination in educational opportunities also apply to any private school or university , if the institution or its students receive funds from the federal government. For example, if students participate in federally-funded student grant programs, or the science department receives federally-funded research grants, then all of the programs and facilities at the institution must provide equal educational opportunities to all students.

VII. CONCLUSION Summarize program strengths and weaknesses that have been highlighted by the responses to the self-study questions posed above. AREAS OF STRENGTH
  • There is general agreement among the faculty that the variety of courses included in the CSUS General Education pattern is a significant strength of the program. However, for most of the faculty, the strength of this "variety" seems to lie more in the distribution of units in the program than in the enormous selection of courses approved for GE. In the various Areas and sub-areas 452 separate courses were offered in the General Education pattern in the Fall of 1999. AREAS OF WEAKNESSES and CONCERN Transfer students (who make up about 70% of the CSUS student body) pose a particularly thorny set of problems to our efforts to provide CSUS graduates with General Education meets its current goals and objectives. For instance, the Advanced Study questionnaire revealed that 67% of the respondents (mostly seniors and juniors) had taken their freshman English courses at a community college (Appendix N.1).

General Education Requirements (GE) Home Undergraduate Program Advising Booklet Career Opportunities ... Field Placement FAQs In the 1999-2000 academic year, the university introduced a major revision of the General Education (G.E.) Program. These revisions facilitate transfer of coursework completed at California community colleges. All students who enrolled in the university as first-time freshmen during or after the fall 1999 semester are required to complete this new General Education Program. Transfer students may or may not be required to complete the new G.E program depending on which catalog year they may claim. Transfer students should consult their faculty advisor to determine their catalog year options. The new General Education (G.E.) Program is divided into four sub-categories and requires students to complete a minimum of 51 semester units. This includes 39 units in Foundation and Breadth 12 units in FOUNDATION which must be satisfied with a "C" or "CR" grade or better in all courses

English Education majors complete what is called the single-subject waiver program, which consists of ten core courses plus one of three breadth-and-perspective patterns. This program has been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialling as providing the necessary course work for entry into a credential program at the completion of the major. Beyond completing the General Education and Major requirements, students wishing to earn a credential at Chico State must complete classes that are prerequisites for the credential program .
