Looking to fill that void I got this book and its companion introductory volume, Peter Selby and Steve Slavin's "Practical Algebra: A Self-Teaching Guide", and am extremely relieved to find out mathematical illiteracy can be remedied with the right tools. These books not only taught me the basics of algebra and geometry, but more importantly, gave me a glimpse of how mathematical ideas are developed. Concepts that appeared to me to be mystical elaborations now seem full of reason and purpose, thanks to the self-contained nature of these two books and the step by step construction of ever more complex themes. The authors focus not on mechanical repetition but on understanding, on making sense to the student, so everything fits in in a meaningful way, instead of appearing as a loose aggregation of disjointed bits. I really got a lot of enjoyment out of learning all the material, and finding out what a wonderful world of ideas this knowledge opens up.

Rationale
Mathematics is the study of function and pattern in number, logic, space and structure. It provides both a framework for thinking and a means of symbolic communication that is powerful, logical, concise and unambiguous and a means by which people can understand and manage their environment. Essential mathematical activities include abstracting, providing, applying, investigating, modelling and problem solving. This study is designed to provide access to worthwhile and challenging mathematical learning in a way which takes into account the needs and aspirations of a wide range of students. It is also designed to promote students' awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life in an increasingly technological society and confidence in making effective use of mathematical ideas, techniques and processes. All students in all the mathematical units offered will apply knowledge and skills, model, investigate and solve problems. They will use technology to support learning mathematics and its application in different contexts.

      Information on General Education Courses
General Education Courses Purpose: The Department of Mathematics’ general education courses aim to prepare students to communicate logically, become proficient at quantitative reasoning, and to think critically and analytically. The courses intend to enable students to deal comfortably with the basic notions of number and chance and to acquire mathematical tools to help reach their career objectives. University Level Courses: Mat 101, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, develops students’ understanding of the mathematics needed to teach elementary school. Topics include sets, functions, logic, the real number system, number theory, and problem solving. The course is mainly for early childhood, elementary education, and special education majors. Mat 103, Introduction to Mathematics, is a liberal arts introduction to the nature and beauty of mathematics. Topics include logic, graph theory, probability, and decision theory. An additional topic is chosen from finance, geometry, and statistics.

Student Resources Home Basic Skills Geometry Trigonometry ... Comment on this page The geosciences require a good knowledge of quantitative skills, usually first learned in math or physics courses. These skills can quickly become rusty, half-remembered, or forgotten altogether, at which point a refresher is in order. On these pages we have gathered a selection of online resources with good reference material and quick lessons, with the hopes that it might be what an ailing petrology (or atmosphere, or ecology) student needs to get them back up to speed. Below are general use sites, which cover broad ranges of information with what we find to be the best clarity, illustration, and depth. More specific topics may be browsed using the links on the left side of this page many of the sites below have sections featured on the topic-specific pages.
GeoMaths MathHelp Material. This site provides students with mathematics self-study material which is embedded within the context of the geosciences. The material consists of many MathHelp "notebooks" covering specific mathematical topics related to a relevant geological context, such as plate velocity or cliff erosion. The notebooks contain explanations, illustrations, and examples. A mathematical glossary is also constantly available, providing a brief explanation of mathematical keywords and links to the relevant notebook.

    http://www.bsi.vt.edu/bsi/core_curriculum.html
The BSI has developed a strategy to deal with an issue that faces many beginning students: entering the university knowing that they want to do "biology", but because of limited high school exposure, having no concept of the breadth of disciplines available at Virginia Tech subsumed under this rubric. Consequently, students may enroll in one department, but discover with experience, that they really want to specialize in another area of the biological sciences. Data obtained by the Virginia Tech Office of Institutional Research show that the vast majority of students (81%) who enter the university in "biology" graduate in "biology", albeit in another biological science department. Often, this change requires attendance at the university for more than four years in order to complete the necessary requirements. The BSI has devised a three semester core curriculum that will help students graduate in a timely fashion even if they change majors within the biological sciences.
