Curriculum Outline
Central Connecticut State University does not have a "pre-med" major. This is not required, nor preferred, for admission to health professions schools. Most students major in the sciences although this is not required either. For most professional schools, there is a basic set of courses that are required as follows:
  • General Biology I,II (1 year) BIO 121, 122
  • General Chemistry I,II (1 year), CHEM 121, 122
  • Organic Chemistry I,II (1 year), CHEM 311, 312
  • General Physics (1 year, need not be calculus based) PHYS 125, 126 or 121, 122
  • Calculus I and II, MATH 125 and 126 or 122 and 221
Most professional schools require these courses. However, the required courses for admission to professional school can vary from school to school. This is especially true for veterinary medicine. This requires early and careful curriculum planning with the aid of the Chief Health Professions Advisor. The courses listed above are the minimal amount that prepare you for the MCAT or other professional school admissions test you need to take. However, it is to your advantage to take more courses in the sciences and we highly recommend that you do.
Course Schedule
We have listed below a suggested schedule for the courses needed for admissions to a professional school or for preparation for an admissions test. Note that you will need to add courses as required to fulfill your major, minor and the general education requirements. Also, depending on the type and actual professional school you plan on attending, there may be other requirements that substitute for the suggested courses below. The Chief Health Professions Advisor can discuss these topics with you.

110 Fundamentals of Mathematics (3)
(Credit in Math 110 does not satisfy the General Mathematics requirement. If a student has credit in any other mathematics course, he may not enroll in MATH
110). Basic skills are emphasized: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions; rules of exponents; solving linear and quadratic equations; graphs;
"word" problems. [Return]
111 College Algebra (3)
(Credit in MATH 111 is not allowed if student has credit in MATH 122). A basic study of logic, structure, and foundations of algebra. Major topics include
functions, inequalities, equations, roots, radicals, and exponents. Every student taking MATH 111 must have had Algebra I and II in high school. Students who do
not meet the above requirements should take MATH 110. [Return]
112 Trigonometry (3)
A study of trigonometric functions, derivation of formulas, the solution of right and oblique triangles with practical applications, solving trigonometric equations, and verifying trigonometric identities. Other topics include vectors, complex numbers, and logarithms. Prerequisite: Proficiency in algebra and geometry.

Alabama General Studies in Mathematics
This document expands on and clarifies the AGSC Guidelines and Criteria for Courses Submitted in Mathematics The courses described below have been designated by the Articulation/General Studies Academic Discipline Committee for Mathematics as being the mathematics core curriculum
  • Courses submitted for approval as General Studies should conform to one of the descriptions below. If possible the title and course number should be used. Other titles and course numbers may be used, but the equivalent title and number from this list should be indicated. Schools may offer coursework in other than the courses described in this package; however, the school must make it clear that such coursework may not transfer to another institute of higher learning in Alabama. The Mathematics Discipline Committee will consider innovative mathematics courses that are proposed for General Studies designation but do not appear here. Schools submitting such courses must clearly indicate how transfer credit should be treated.
  • Honors courses in these topics may be submitted. It is assumed that these courses will have a greater emphasis on concepts, theory and proofs, but cover the same topics. They would transfer to schools without Honors programs as the non-honors equivalent.

Mathematics (MAT)
This is a foundational mathematics course for students underprepared in mathematics. It includes an extensive review of the arithmetic of real numbers and a thorough treatment of beginning algebra, as well as topics from number theory, discrete mathematics and geometry. Problem-solving strategies and applications are emphasized. Prerequisite: Satisfactory placement. Three lecture.
Practical mathematical skills needed in a wide variety of trade and technical areas. Course includes a review of fractions, decimals, percents, measurement, basic algebra and a brief overview of geometry and trigonometry. Prerequisite:
Instruction and practice in the mathematics of fundamental business operations. Percentages, payroll, the mathematics of buying, selling and inventory, interest computations, loans, investments and taxes. Prerequisite:
Reviews the nature and uses of modern mathematics for students in the arts, humanities, social sciences. It is not intended for science or technical students, but is designed to meet the math requirements for an AAS degree in selected majors. ( See Section IV Prerequisite:
This course is an introduction to algebra for those who have not previously studied it or for whom it has been some time since doing so. It is the first class in a two-semester course in Algebra. It is assumed that after completion of this class, you will finish the remainder of this algebra sequence by enrolling in MAT 112, Algebra II: Intermediate. This course examines the fundamental ideas of algebra and presents basic laws, properties and operations. Techniques for handling algebraic expressions and solving linear equations and inequalities are covered in depth. Problem-solving strategies and applications are emphasized.
