Areas Computational Science and Engineering This research activity deals with the design and implementation of parallel algorithms for solving large sparse linear systems that arise in computational fluid dynamics, computational nanoelectronics, and computational nanomechanics. The research also deals with the development of efficient parallel algorithms for (i) the singular value decomposition, and (ii) symmetric and nonsymmetric eigenvalue problem solvers, for those large sparse matrices that arise in methods for model reduction of large-scale dynamical systems.

John L. Hennessy
(Stanford University) has been a member of the Stanford faculty since 1977, where he teaches computer architecture and supervises a group of energetic Ph.D. students. He is currently Chairman of the Computer Science Department and holds the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professorship in the School of Engineering. Hennessy is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received the 1994 IEEE Piore Award for his contributions to the development of RISC technology. Hennessy's original research area was optimizing compilers. His research group at Stanford developed many of the techniques now in commercial use. In 1981, he started the MIPS project at Stanford with a handful of graduate students. After completing the project in 1984, he took a one-year leave of absence from the university to co-found MIPS Computer Systems, which has since merged with Silicon Graphics. Hennessy's recent research at Stanford focuses on the area of designing and exploiting multiprocessors. Most recently, he has been involved in the development of the DASH multiprocessor architecture, one of the first distributed shared-memory multiprocessors. David A. Patterson

General Information
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
is a broadly based academic unit offering instructional programs and carrying on research activities in mathematics, computer science, and statistics. Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science degrees are offered.
Areas of research specialty among the faculty include applied mathematics, human-computer interaction, programming languages and compilers, software engineering, biostatistics, combinatorics, computer algebra, expert systems, functional analysis, number theory, numerical analysis, scientific computing, operations research, parallel processing, probability and statistics, special functions, supercomputing, symbolic computation, analysis of algorithms, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Master of Science Program
The M.S. degree is available in mathematics and computer science. All programs are professionally oriented in the sense that they are primarily intended to prepare students for employment as practicing applied mathematicians, computational scientists, mathematical statisticians, computer specialists, or software engineers in business, industry, or government. Courses are designed to emphasize applications and computational methods as well as appropriate theoretical aspects. Requirements are sufficiently flexible to permit students to select coursework appropriate to their individual goals and interests.

Search our Site Interactive Walkthrough of Large CAD Models Principal Investigator: Dinesh Manocha
Funding Agency: Office of Naval Research
Agency Number: Abstract
We propose a design and an implementation of a system for interactive walkthrough of large CAD models. The system will be interfaced with the immersive hardware and used for applications like immersive modeling, design evaluation, simulation and training. Our emphasis is to develop better algorithms, software systems and demonstrate their applications. The set of problems include:
  • Hierarchical and multiresolution representation of models for fast display.
  • Fast techniques for visibility culling
  • Use of textures for representing geometry and radiositized meshes.
  • Interactive display of large polygonal, sculptured and solid models on current graphics systems.
  • Interactive collision detection between geometric models and collision response using haptic interfaces.
We expect to integrate the systems with the graphics and immersive hardware and use them for immersive modeling and design evaluation of submarines and ship models. The goal is to create an environment where the user will explore a model of a submarine or a ship in the same way as he would explore a real one by walking around it. Eventually such systems will also be useful for experiential training, crisis management and integrated damage control training technology.
