We greet you in the Presence of our suffering God, who is first named in Scripture after hearing the cries of the poor in Egyptian bondage; in the Name of Jesus, God's Only Begotten, who commanded us to accompany him in bearing the cross; and in the Power of the Holy Spirit who promises to sustain life in the midst of death, who oversees the continuing work of redemption and reconciliation until that day when creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay. During this past week, from 2-4 January 2000, we have been participating in the fourth international Baptist peace conference, sponsored by a variety of Baptist organizations and hosted by Whitley College here in Melbourne. We are 141 persons from 26 countries and every part of the globe. Our conference theme, "Hearing the Cry, Acting in Hope," has focused on attention to multiple issues of human rights and reconciliation. For three days we have unfolded our burdens to each other and to God, in discussion and stories, in prayers and songs. We have studied and interpreted Scripture together; we have allowed the pain in our hearts to overflow in each other's presence; we have engaged in strategic thinking and planning, identifying together the sometimes disruptive but always redeeming work of the Spirit in our scattered communities.

Lyndal Osborne: Geographies and Objects of Enticement January 11 to February 24, 2002 Lyndal Osborne was born in Newcastle (New South Wales) Australia. She studied at the National Art School in Sydney and received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin, USA. Since 1971, Osborne has been based in Edmonton, and is a Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta. Osborne has been exhibiting in Canada and internationally since the early 1970s. Her work is represented in numerous Canadian collections, including: the National Gallery of Canada; the Glenbow Museum, Calgary; Edmonton Art Gallery; Art Gallery of Hamilton; University of Saskatchewan; and University of Calgary. The International Dalit Solidarity Network "Working globally against discrimination by work and descent" Discrimination based on descent in Africa 1. Introduction This paper is based upon research of existing materials of an ethnological and anthropological nature, as well as items from the media, papers written by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), websites and submissions to local, national and international commissions. I have restricted the material to cover those forms of discrimination which exist in Africa which rely entirely on the application of the descent limb of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). Without this aspect of the ICERD, the cases discussed below have no recourse to international human rights mechanisms to tackle the discrimination they suffer. The first types of descent based discrimination I deal with are the caste systems that exist in areas of the Sahel , particularly West Africa , but also Somalia and the surrounding areas. These are systems of exclusion based on “occupational specialization of endogamous groups, in which membership is based on ascription, and between which social distance is regulated by the concept of pollution” . This definition can be applied to many of the casted peoples, usually occupational specialists in blacksmithing, potting, barding, leatherworking, weaving and other craft professions, who form a small proportion of some communities across the

Art and Life in Burkina Faso, Land of Upright People

April 3 - May 8, 2002 The art works gathered here come from Burkina Faso, the West African nation formerly known as Upper Volta. In 1984, former President Thomas Sankara (1949-1987) renamed the country Burkina Faso, drawing together words from the languages of the country's major populations, the Mossi and the Dyula. Roughly translated, Burkina Faso means "the land of upright people." Located at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, with national boundaries drawn by the French during the colonial era, many diverse peoples live in this dry, landlocked country, independent since 1960. Burkina Faso's population is made up of more than sixty different ethnic groups. The country's complex cultural diversity is reflected in this exhibition which includes works of art by Bwa, Bobo, Kassena, Lela, Lobi, Mossi, Nuna, Nunama, Toussian, Turka, and Winiama artists. While Burkina Faso is often described as one of the most economically impoverished countries in the world, with an average annual per capita income of between two and three hundred dollars, in terms of cultural traditions, it is one of the richest places on earth. The peoples of Burkina Faso create a wide range of objects, diverse in form, function, size and scale, and employing many different materials and technologies. Within their original contexts, art works are valued not only for their aesthetic qualities, but also for their functional efficacy. In Burkina Faso, art is not just something to look at, but also serves life-sustaining purposes, vital to the well-being of individuals and the larger society.
