    THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY
    From an Adult Viewpoint....
It often seems that all children do is play! They play until they are five or six, then they go off to school and start to learn. They play until they are big enough to really begin to do things. So it seems to grown-ups.
    From a Child's Viewpoint....
Play takes on a very different meaning. Play to a child IS learning! They learn to play and play to learn. Play is terribly important to a child. It is not a distraction. It's not something they do to take up time. It's the child's life.
At birth the infant is a pioneer setting forth to explore a very new and very strange place. She does not know how the world works. She does not know that when you drop something it goes down, that balls roll, or that things far away look smaller than they really are. Infants are born beginners in life. They have to set about learning everything! And learning everything about everything!!
Not only does the newborn not know these worldly things, she doesn't know that she can learn to do the things she needs to do to get along in the world. She doesn't know that she can learn to turn over, sit up, walk, feed herself, dress herself, ride a bike, be a friend, or even talk.

06:33 PM May. 15, 1998 PT Apple Computer, which has made much of its image as the computer corporation with heart, has terminated the in-house program that helped build that image. But the way Apple pulled the plug speaks volumes about how much its corporate culture has changed since the company's financial woes began, and calls into question Apple's continuing commitment to disabled people. The Worldwide Disabilities Solutions Group, a team of five Apple employees that ensured that each Apple product and accessibility plug-in met the needs of disabled people, was fired on 31 January 1998.

The group, founded in 1985 by Alan Brightman, had been the industry's most active and innovative team. And while group staffers said the pink slips were expected, they were surprised at the harsh treatment Apple gave to their major project, a Web site called Convomania for kids with life-threatening diseases. According to ex-group members and children actively involved with Convomania, Apple initially permitted them to keep the site running on a voluntary basis under the name Convonation, rather than abandon children who had grown accustomed to using it on computers in their homes and hospital rooms.

If you're reading this column, chances are you're giving serious thought to a home-based business. And it's likely you have children in varying numbers and sizes around that home.
Hold on. Does this spell the end of your work-at-home fantasies? Are kids and home-based businesses like oil and water, or politics and polite conversation? By no means. I can attest to that. I've owned a home-based business for 17 years and for roughly half of that time I've had one (and, later, a second) kidlet in the work vicinity. But that's not to suggest that children and home businesses fold together naturally. It takes some planning, flexibility and, perhaps above all, guidelines. Here are some tips to get you started.
  • Break the news that you're in business. First things first: Hold a family meeting to discuss your home-based business. Kim Gordon, author of " Bringing Home the Business: The 30 Truths Every Home Business Owner Must Know "You should cover everything from friends coming over during business hours to whether they can run the vacuum or the dishwasher," she says. "If you don't, these topics can flare up four to six months down the road."

Tech-smart but fickle teens are being taught to expect more from marketing By Eileen Colkin ecolkin@cmp.com ans Inc. is so eager to have teen-agers think of the sneaker company as cool that it builds skateboarding parks for them at major shopping malls. When opening its sixth park last April, Vans' CIO Joseph "Jody" Giles decided to try a live Webcast of skaters doing stunts at the park and promote it to loyal customers via E-mail. The goal was to keep building closer relationships with notoriously ad-wary teens. Somewhat to Giles' surprise, not only did people watchthey also bought. "It was nothing more than 'click here to see the grand opening,' and thousands of people clicked through to watch as my IT guys filmed it on a camcorder," Giles says. "We could see them click through, watch the video, and buy shoes." That success inspired Giles to use the security cameras already in place at company parks to deliver live Web footage so teens can log on to watch their friends or view events such as Vans' amateur skating championship. It's part of the effort to sell to the tech-smart, marketing-wise teen-agers known as Generation Y, so-labeled for their propensity to question everything. "You can't just throw a product in front of their faces," says Giles. "You have to give them something." Born into the Internet Age, today's teen-agers embrace Internet technology the way Baby Boomers did television. But they're skeptical of marketers and prefer to independently research products once they hear advertising promises. They seek relationships with brands that cater to their changing interests. And they have money. In 1999, U.S. teens spent $125 billion, and, more important, influenced household purchasing decisions worth $200 billion to $500 billion, according to a report from Gartner.

As a parent, Bob Evans needs to explain such tough topics to his teenager as sex, drugs and... Enron.
    By Bob Evans
Fourteen-year-old to parent: "So what do you think about this Enron thing?" "Well, it's complicated. What part of it are you asking about?" Long, silent gaze, bordering on both incredulity at the question and suspicion at the dodge. "The part about a few top-level people lying through their teeth and selling their own shares while the price was high and making tens of millions while they were telling all the regular workers to keep buying the stock with all their pension money no matter how the price went." "Well, like I said, it's complicated. A lot of people at all levels of the company made a lot of money, at one time, from Enron's innovative and market-making approaches. And that's not a bad thing. But equity markets are complicated, and it's hard to know when to sell." "Why do you talk to me like I'm an idiot?" "Hey, hey, hey: Why would you say something like that? I tried to answer your question in a reasonable way without making it overly complicated."
