Welcome to the Beat Bulimia website. I'm Judith Asner, M.S.W. I specialize in treating people suffering from eating disorders, especially bulimia nervosa. Bulimia (bulimia nervosa) is defined as periods of uncontrolled eating. The person eats anywhere up to 10,000 calories in a sitting. The binge eating is followed by purging behaviors, i.e., vomiting, laxatives, excessive exercise or sleep. Bulimia is not a pretty disease. It does not bring the admiration of peers, as starving does. Writer's have spoken about "the moral superiority" of anorexia nervosa. Being able to starve is an "art" because it involves self-control. One feels so morally superior! Society admires starving women. Not so with purging out-of-control women! There is no moral superiority in throwing up your food after stuffing yourself. But all-in-all, it is a way of avoiding feelings by focusing on food and thinness. Therefore, many people with this illness hide in shame. On the Beat Bulimia site, we'll be talking about the causes of bulimia, what you need to do to recover from bulimia, and how your family and friends can help. Our goal here is to bring bulimics out of hiding and form a virtual community where we can help each other.

bulimia: more than "ox hunger" It is estimated that one in four women in college have bulimia. One in four. It has become so common that some schools have been reported to have posted signs in the girls' bathrooms that say something along the lines of - "Please stop throwing up - you are destroying our piping system and backing things up!" (The acid that comes up from purging was eroding the schools' pipes.) I've also noticed that among the complaints of having to share a room on campus with someone, that one of them was dealing with a roommate who hogged the bathroom because he/she was throwing up or on the toilet constantly from laxative abuse. Once a problem that was "too gross" to imagine has practically the whole country affected. When did throwing up "here and there" become so acceptable? When is this ever going to end? words.of. experience: amanda Since the age of six I've had bad body image. I was always NOT RIGHT. Something was always fucked up with me. Either it was my hair or my feet or my nose, or my weight. I figured that if I could just be thinner, things would be better. If I could just lose some weight, I would be a different person with different friends and some different glamorous life. And so it started. I didn't become immediately immersed in the idea of throwing up. Around that time I had gone off and on diets from the age of about 7 to 11, even though at that age you consider a diet really just telling people you are on one while never really changing your eating patterns. But one day I overheard some people talking about how they vomited what they ate just to keep their weight steady, and I figured that was a good idea. If food never fully went "in," I couldn't put anymore weight on. It was disgusting for me to imagine making myself vomit, but... I put my whole life into being the best, the thinnest, the winner, and if this made me drop some weight...

Everybody eats. We do so both because we need to and because we enjoy it. However, as with all human behaviour, there are huge differences between people. Some eat more, some eat less, some put on weight easily, others do not. And some people go to such extremes that they harm themselves, by eating too much or too little. As a result they may harm their health and come to the attention of doctors. This leaflet deals with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Although it is easier to talk about them as different conditions, individual patients often suffer from symptoms of both. Indeed, it often happens that bulimia develops after a period of months or years of anorexic symptoms. Women suffer from these disorders 10 times as often as men, and so this leaflet refers to the sufferer as 'she'. Although often thought of as adult problems, these disorders most often start in the teenage years while the sufferer is still at home Anorexia Fear of fatness
Under-eating
Excessive loss of weight
Vigorous exercise
Monthly periods stop
Anorexia usually starts in the mid-teens and affects 1 fifteen-year-old girl in every 150. Occasionally it may start earlier, in childhood, or later, in the 30s or 40s. Girls from professional or managerial families are perhaps more likely to develop it than girls from working-class backgrounds. Other members of the family have often had similar symptoms.

Bulimia has been reported in male patients (38,42,44,69). Herzog et al. (38) noted an incidence in males of approximately four to five percent of a total population of bulimic patients. Gwirtsman found that ten to 13 percent of male students met DSMIII criteria for bulimia. The mean age of onset ranged fro 21 (38) to 24 (42) years. Duration of illness prior to treatment ranged from six years (42) to 7.4 years (38). This duration is significantly longer than the 4.2 years' duration of illness prior to treatment for bulimic females (38). Approximately two-thirds of bulimic males had a history of being overweight as compared to one-third of bulimic females. Socioeconomic classes were equally distributed in one series (38). Mitchell's (42) study noted that patients were employed, that they were functioning well, and that eleven of twelve were married. The clinical manifestations of male bulimia are comparable to female bulimia. Preoccupation with weight control and associations with the cultural pressures of professional life regarding personal performance (especially in sports, fashion, and musci) have been related to the onset of bulimia in some male patients (44).

These are my children below... aren't they beautiful? My husband is great too!
I never would of believed it possible, to have children... to be normal and have a family after all the damage bulimia anorexia eating disorders did.
It's been 9 yrs now that I'm totally free. Hard to believe huh? Ah-huh. You see, with God all things are possible.
For the ten yrs I practiced this horrible eating disorder bulimia that controlled my life and almost took it at the same time... I knew Jesus but I was so set on finding myself in a world of vain images and seductive appetites, I started at age 14. The vomiting, the binges, bulemia the secret sin that nobody knew until it was too late.
What to do. If Jesus could heal, why didn't he me? I asked Him so many times to take this monster out from within.
The journey I had to go on was worth the lessons I learned about God, healing and recovery. GOD's healing is permanent. All Things Are Possible with God. Free of bulimia because of Jesus, His Healing is FREE.

    Bulimia Nervosa
The most common element surrounding ALL Eating Disorders is the inherent presence of a low self esteem
Men and women who live with Bulimia seek out binge and purge episodes they will eat a large quantity of food in a relatively short period of time and then use behaviors such as taking laxatives or self-induced vomiting because they feel overwhelmed in coping with their emotions, or in order to punish themselves for something they feel they should unrealistically blame themselves for. This can be in direct relation to how they feel about themselves, or how they feel over a particular event or series of events in their lives. Those suffering with Bulimia may seek episodes of binging and purging to avoid and let out feelings of anger, depression, stress or anxiety. "... the shackled anger I am accustomed to... reflecting on myself... and with every tear there are a thousand more that need to follow so I may climb from the darkness... " Men and women suffering Bulimia are usually aware they have an eating disorder. Fascinated by food they sometimes buy magazines and cook-books to read recipes, and enjoy discussing dieting issues.
