Along with several other slaves, the 13th Army Corps drafted Cathay shortly after the onset of the Civil War. Working as a cook under the Union soldiers, he traveled through cities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Washington, Virginia and later returned to St. Louis, Mo.
Cathay's travels helped him developed a keen understanding and appreciation for the military. This experience would prove to be an invaluable asset in his future endeavors.
Following the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, Congress created six all-black military units. They became known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
It was a name of honor and respect given to them by the plains Indians due to their demonstrated strength, courage and perseverance as soldiers in combat, as well as their ethnic physical trait of short, black and curly hair.
At the time of his enlistment, a physician gave Cathy a limited medical assessment and cited him as being 5'9" with black skin, black eyes and black hair. At the time he was determined fit for duty.

Black Codes
These were laws made in the South after the Civil War that were meant to keep blacks in a segregated, inferior position. Buffalo Soldiers After the Civil War a lot of black men went to the west because they felt that they would have more freedom there. Some were cowboys, some were soldiers, such as the cavalry unit that became known as the "Buffalo Soldiers." They were led by Henry Flipper, the first black graduate of West Point, who has his own tragic story. The Emancipation Proclamation More than any other single statement, this proclamation by Abraham Lincoln can be said to have brought about the end of slavery. Heroes in the Ships: African American Whaling Men African Americans has a major role in the American shipping industry both during and after slavery. This site tells about their place on whaling ships. Life and Writings of Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass was a very great man. His influence began long before slavery ended and lasted long after it was destroyed. Here is a short biography and links to some of his most important writings.

of The Civil War The Civil War began when the Confederate army attacked Fort Sumter(the Union Army's fort) in 1861. The Buffalo Soldiers played a major role war in this war although they weren't allowed in either side's army. The first side to allow black people into their army was the union army. Blacks were used as cooks, laborers, and teamsters. There was a lot of military setbacks and the Union was losing the war, so there was a controversy over the use of Black Soldiers. Eventually, the Congress let the Black soldiers participate in the Armed forces in the Militia Act of July 17, 1862. During the fight, the black soldiers did so well in the battle they used the blacks more. Although they did well in the battles, blacks were still treated lower than whites. They got $10 regardless of their rank, but the lowest rank white soldier got $13. After a debate over pay, blacks got identical pay as whites. The war ended in 1865 and the Confederate army lost. The Confederate army finally enlisted blacks into their army at the end of the war. But at that time they were losing too badly and the black soldiers couldn't help them. If the Confederate army enlisted them into the army earlier, they could have won the war. Indian Wars The Buffalo Soldiers got their name from the indians because of the way they looked. Their short curly hair and dark faces resembled the buffalo, and they also had the spirit of an animal.

Amazon.com: Baseball aficionados know John B. Holway as author of books about the Negro Leagues that rescued from obscurity many of the great black players who could not play in the segregated ranks of major league baseball. Here, Holway sets his sights on another group of heroes: the men of the "Tuskegee experiment"the effort to train black pilots during World War II. Many white officers believed the experiment would be a failure because blacks did not have the skills necessary to become pilots. But the Tuskegee Airmen proved them wrong, and black pilotsin particular those of the 332nd Squadron (the Red Tails of the title)established stellar records in combat. Holway quotes copiously from his interviews with black airmen, and the result is a stunning record of the heroism of black men in all but impossible circumstances

About the Buffalo Soldiers

In the late 19th century, the first African Americans in our nation's history served in the regular peacetime Army. Formed in 1866, two of their regiments - the 9th and 10th Cavalries - were central to the U.S. war against Native Americans in the West. According to legend, these black Army men were called "Buffalo Soldiers" by Native Americans because their tight, curly hair and fighting spirit reminded the Native Americans of the buffalo. The name "Buffalo Soldiers" was adopted by the black soldiers as a sign of honor and respect. Into the 20th century, the name "Buffalo Soldier" continued to be given to the soldiers of all-black military outfits, and these fighters continued to be integral to U.S. fighting forces. Today, Buffalo Soldiers whose valor went unrewarded and unrecognized in their own time are being recognized. In 1997, for example, Gen. Colin Powell helped honor the 54th Regiment, the first black regiment to see battle in the Civil War, in a ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a monument to the 54th. In 2000, the Italian town of Sommacolonia opened the "Fortress of Peace," a park dedicated to fallen Buffalo Soldiers of WWII.

The following article derives from a paper the author delivered at the 1998 Conference of Army Historians in Bethesda, Maryland. Finding the middle, where the truth sometimes rests, requires you to know the edges. When it comes to responsibility for the victory of the United States Army on San Juan Heights, Cuba, on 1 July 1898, the edges are easy to find. On one side, there is the Teddy-centric view, first and most clearly expressed in the writings of Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry Regiment—the legendary Rough Riders. Roosevelt’s memoir of Cuba so emphasized his own role that Mr. Dooley, the barroom pundit created by humorist Peter Finley Dunne, said the book should have been called "Alone in Cuba." Roosevelt augmented his campaign of self-promotion by carrying along his personal publicist. Richard Harding Davis’ dispatches from the front, picked up by many newspapers and magazines, spread the word of TR’s heroics. They also followed a time-honored tradition. George Custer had taken a reporter on the 1874 expedition that discovered gold in the Black Hills, and Nelson Miles had had one along to record his exploits against the tribes of the southern plains. Now Davis, of the

The true story of this country's first black war heroes was shown on several different occasions during Black History Month . The Buffalo Soldiers video was presented to commemorate contributions and sacrifices made by African American soldiers (former slaves), during America's expansion into the West. It was an opportunity to learn about an era of American history not included in traditional history books. Buffalo Soldiers began the legacy of patriotic service in the American armed forces by men of color. The USPTO chapter of Blacks In Government sponsored this informative video, which proved so popular that many employees requested it be shown throughout the year. The Buffalo Soldiers The Buffalo Soldiers - A Brief History The American public was first introduced to the historic account of black soldier integration into the United States military on a broad scale with Edward Zwick’s Academy Award Winning motion picture, Glory This motion picture “officially” introduced us to a very important part of American history that, even in the year 2000, is still not readily taught in our public schools. When the Civil War ended in 1865, there were 166 black regiments consisting of 145 infantry regiments, seven cavalry regiments, 13 artillery batteries and one engineer battalion. At the close of the war, the U.S. Army’s size was significantly reduced. However, it wasn’t long before the government realized it needed more manpower in rebuilding the South and providing support for the westward movement of settlers. In 1866 the Congress of the United States created new regiments in the Army, including two regiments of black cavalry, the Ninth and Tenth regiments, and four regiments of black infantry, the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st. In 1868, the infantry regiments were combined and became the 24
