History During the 15th and 16th centuries, Brunei was a considerable regional power, controlling not only most of Borneo but parts of the Philippines as well. The Spanish and the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive, but it was the British, who arrived in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries, who began to erode Brunei's influence. Sarawak was ceded to the British in the 19th century and a series of 'treaties' were forced on the Sultan as James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, consolidated his power base. In 1888, the sultanate became a British protectorate. Brunei was gradually whittled away until, with a final dash of absurdity, Limbang was ceded to Sarawak in 1890, thus dividing the country in half. In 1929, just as Brunei was about to be swallowed up entirely, oil was discovered. British plans to make Brunei a part of the Malaysian Federation were upset by a revolt in 1962. The Sultan suspended the constitution and opted for independence. The country has been under emergency laws ever since and mooted elections have never eventuated. In 1984, Brunei became completely independent, and underlined its new independence from Britain by joining ASEAN. Since then, it has moved towards Islamic fundamentalism. In 1991, the sale of alcohol was banned and stricter dress codes have been introduced.

    Early History
Little is known of the early history of Brunei. There appears to have been trade between the north-west coast of Kalimantan and China as early as the 6th century and Brunei was influenced by the spread of Hinduism/Buddhism from India in the first millenium. Chinese records make mention of a kingdom of Puni, located on the north-west coast of Kalimantan, which paid tribute to Chinese emperors between the 6th and the 9th centuries. Brunei was claimed by the great Javanese empire of Majapahit in the 14th century, though it was most likely little more than a trading/tributary relationship. Brunei became a more significant state in the 15th century with a greater degree of independence from its larger neighbours. When the Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho visited Brunei in the early 15th century, as part of his exploration of Southeast Asia, he discovered a significant trading port with resident Chinese traders engaged in profitable trade with the homeland. Brunei was a small cog in the early Southeast trading networks but well enough known to figure in the records of the major states. The Brunei ruler seems to have converted to Islam in the middle of the 15th century when he married a daughter of the ruler of Melaka (now Malacca in Peninsular Malaysia). The Portuguese conquest of Melaka in 1511 closed it to Muslim traders, forcing them to look elsewhere.

Brunei Darussalam has been known for its vast reserves of petroleum and gas which fuelled the nation’s economy for the past 70 years. The oil and gas became the country’s main source of export revenue. Exploration started in 1899 with the first recorded well drilled close to Brunei town, now known as Bandar Seri Begawan. Enthusiasm was high and six companies were involved in the oil search including Royal Dutch Shell which started operations in 1913 after discovering the Miri field in Sarawak, Malaysia. By 1918, all other companies had pulled out except Royal Dutch Shell which continued to search and found some accumulation of oil and gas in Labi, Belait in 1924. The find was too small to be commercialised. In 1925, the search shifted to the Seria, Belait coastal strip in the west of the state and it was in 1929 when the first commercial find was made by the British Malayan Petroleum Company, owned by Royal Dutch Shell and the forerunner to the present Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn. Bhd. For a long time, the onshore Seria oil field was Brunei Darussalam’s only producing field despite some 48 exploration wells being drilled between 1914 and 1960. It was developed further in 1940 and production had risen to 17,000 barrels per day. Despite the extensive damaged caused by the World War II to the field, the post war production in 1956 has peaked at 15,000 barrels per day.
