IN 1970, a timid little boy stepped gingerly off a steamship at Brunei Town, as it was then called. Propeller-driven aeroplanes did land in this little town, but there was no direct flight from Kuala Lumpur at that time. Ships were the preferred mode of travel then, and noisy little motorised sampans ferried people to various points around the town itself. He walked with his parents past the harbour-master's office and across the road to the 3-storey Brunei Hotel. The fabled water-village or Kampung Ayer was visible on Brunei Bay. Not far away stood the pristine Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, landmark symbol of Brunei, Realm Of Peace. The narrow streets were busy with pedestrians dodging the vehicular traffic that consisted of Hillmans, Vauxhalls, Singers, Austins, Morrises, Wolsleys and other venerable British car-marques. On a scenic hill overlooking Brunei Bay stood the stylish new Churchill Memorial: the only museum of its kind in the world, dedicated entirely to the life and times of a charismatic and controversial foreign politician.

Muara, the deep-water port, offers direct shipping links to Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, and several other Asian destinations. There are plans to extend Muara’s quay length from the existing 250 meters to 580 meters, more than double the current capacity. As a supply-driven facility, Muara Port is expected to better serve as a regional hub serving ports of Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan in Malaysia, and West Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan, China, and Australia in the future. The ongoing expansion of the Brunei International Airport is expected to meet the needs of 1.5 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo by 2003. Brief History History of the Department of Civil Aviation
Commercial air transport in Brunei began in 1953, with the establishment of air service links connecting Bandar Seri Begawan with Anduki in the Belait district. Initial flights to Malaysia were made to accommodate travellers from Labuan in Sabah and Lutong in Sarawak. Airport services were operated from the Berakas area at an old runway site built by the Japanese during World War II. It was known then as the Brunei Airport.
The growth in popularity of air travel in the '70s resulted in a significant increased in the civil aviation movement. Suddenly, the old airport was swamped with activity, operating beyond its capacity. This prompted the Government to scout for a new site to build a modern airport, in order to cater to the needs of the growing number of users, and simultaneously utilising modern technological development.
A new airport was constructed in Mukim Berakas in the Brunei-Muara District. The choice of the site proved a wise decision. It has the advantage of a strategic location - easily accessible from all areas of the country. The airport became operational in 1974. Its inauguration marked an important date in the history of civil aviation in Brunei. The airport opened Brunei to the world. Aptly, the new airport was named Brunei International Airport.

    HISTORY
Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate, which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century and later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was subjugated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence. The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan, Bolkiah (1473-1521), who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured Manila; and under the ninth sultan, Hassan (1605-19), who fully developed an elaborate Royal Court structure, elements of which remain today. After Sultan Hassan, Brunei entered a period of decline, due to internal battles over royal succession as well as the rising influences of European colonial powers in the region, that, among other things, disrupted traditional trading patterns, destroying the economic base of Brunei and many other Southeast Asian sultanates. In 1839, the English adventurer James Brooke arrived in Borneo and helped the Sultan put down a rebellion. As a reward, he became governor and later "Rajah" of Sarawak in northwest Borneo and gradually expanded the territory under his control.

Country Info Brunei Introduction Brunei General Data Brunei Maps Brunei Culture ... Brunei Time and Date Brunei History Back to Top In the early 16th century Brunei was a sultanate with nominal authority over the whole of Borneo and some parts of the Sulu Islands in the Philippines. It was first visited by Europeans in 1521, by the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián del Cano. After this encounter, trade with Europeans, as well as piratical activities directed against them, developed quickly. The Spanish captured the capital in 1580 but were soon compelled to evacuate it. Brunei's early history is obscure, but it was known to be trading with and paying tribute to China in the 6th century AD. It then came under Hindu influence for a time through allegiance to the Majapahit kingdom in Java. When the ships of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition anchored off Brunei in 1521, the fifth sultan, the great Bolkiah, controlled practically the whole of Borneo, the Sulu Archipelago, and neighbouring islands. Toward the end of the 16th century, Brunei was torn by internal strife. A gradual decline in power continued through the 19th century, notably with the cession of Sarawak to the English adventurer James (later Sir James) Brooke in 1841, the expansion of Sarawak by additional grants to Brooke, the cession to Britain of the island of Labuan in Brunei Bay, and the final loss of what is now Sabah (eastern East Malaysia). Brunei's fortunes began to revive, however, when petroleum was first produced in 1929.

Travel Warning History During the 15th and 16th centuries, Brunei was considered as one of the regional great powers, controlling Borneo and substantial parts of the Philippines as well. The Spanish and the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive, but it was the British, who arrived in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries, who began to erode Brunei's influence. Sarawak was ceded to the British in the 19th century and a series of 'treaties' were forced on the Sultan as James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, consolidated his power base. In 1888, the sultanate became a British protectorate.

From the 14th to the 16th centuries Brunei Darussalam was the seat of a powerful sultanate extending over Sabah, Sarawak and the lower Philippines. Thus, the current Sultan represents one of the oldest continuously ruling dynasties in the world. By the 19th century, the Brunei Darussalam Empire had been whittled away by wars, piracy and the colonial expansion of European powers.
In 1847, the sultan concluded a treaty with Great Britain and in 1888 Brunei Darussalam officially became a British protectorate. In 1906, the Residential System was established in Brunei Darussalam. A British Resident was nominated as a representative of the British government to advise the sultan in all matters except Malay customs, traditions and Islamic religion.
The 1959 Agreement established a written constitution which gave Brunei Darussalam internal self-government. In 1971, the agreement was amended and revised to assert full internal independence except defence and external affairs.
In 1967 His Highness Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien abdicated in favour of his son Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah. On January 1, 1984 Brunei Darussalam resumed full independence and the Sultan took office as Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Home Affairs Minister, presiding over a cabinet of six. In October 1986, the cabinet was expanded to 11 members, with His Majesty relinquishing the portfolios of Finance and Home Affairs and taking over the Defence portfolio which his late father had held since 1984. In 1988 another reshuffle brought about the elevation of the deputy minister to a full minister and the creation of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources designed to boost the country's development.
