Adding Graphics, Colors and Styles
On the Web, conveying content is the core purpose of a webpage , especially so for the pages of an educational institution like Denison: the single most important reason visitors will return to your page is for current and correct information . Certainly there are some applications in which visual information is critical to the information transfer, for instance in the representation of some arts and artifacts. For most webpages, the addition of graphics, colors and styles should be considered very carefully to enhance, and not distract from, information transfer. However, a visually-pleasing page done properly will make your visitor's research time more enjoyable and give you some personal and creative satisfaction! Many ISPs offer web space to their dial-up customers. Typically this will be less than 5MB, and there may be other restrictions; for example, many do not allow commercial use of this space. http://www.freewebspace.net/ There are also many web space providers (aka presence providers) who will sell you space on their servers. Prices will range from as little as $1 per month, up to $100 per month or more, depending upon your needs. Non-virtual Web space is typically the cheapest, offering a URL like: http://www.some-provider.com/yourname/ For a little more, plus the cost of registering a domain name, you can get virtual web space, which will allow you to have a URL like http://www.yourname.com/. If you have some permanent connection to the Internet, perhaps via leased line from your ISP then you could install an httpd and operate your own Web server. There are several Web servers available for almost all platforms.

    Notes:
  • HTML language , including specifications (what's allowed and what isn't) and current recommendations. The HTML language itself is not case-sensitive; however, XHTML, which is the next standard for markup languages, is case-sensitive, and we recommend that you adopt the XHMTL standard of writing your HTML in lower-case. HTML elements are generally mnemonic; the markup codes use easily memorized words, acronyms, or abbreviations based on the name. The three most common errors in HTML documents are:
    • typos : one small typing mistake can render the rest of your document unreadable. Be sure to include all your angle brackets and other punctuation. Note that quotation marks must surround all values. missing pieces : if you don't include the ending or closing piece of the tag, the browser doesn't know when to stop applying it. For years, web browsers were very forgiving, but newer browsers and newer versions of older browsers are becoming much less so, mostly because the newer standards demand it. nesting errors : if you nest one element inside another, you must close the inner element before you close the parent one (the same concept as applied in the

    Cascading Style Sheet Summary
    Notes:
  • Style sheets allow you to control how HTML elements are presented on the web. Style sheet properties are regulated by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C); their web site has extensive information available on cascading style sheets , including specifications (what's allowed and what isn't) and current recommendations.
    • Design for graceful degradation, and for pages that still look at least readable in non-CSS browsers. Test all pages with CSS turned off. Test frequently in multiple browser environments. For complex uses of CSS (e.g., positioning and dynamic HTML) use an authoring tool such as Dreamweaver or GoLive - but avoid older tools such as Claris Home Page or FrontPage 97 even for simple use of CSS. Add style rules incrementally, testing in between. Styles and HTML elements interact in complex, and often unpredictable, ways. If possible, avoid cascading (e.g., with both institutional and personal style sheets).
    There are four ways to include styles in an HTML document:
    • embedded : in the head of a document, using the style element;

    http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/oa/fedwebguide/web.htm
    II. C. Web publishing Appropriateness Agencies need to decide what types of material should be published on the web site. The web offers new opportunities for including electronic materials and resources never before available. Instead of publishing only documents, agencies can publish movies, sound, software, and electronic data files, and provide interactive experiences. Web publishing may compliment an existing paper publishing process. However, agencies need to consider the new paradigm the web presents in determining how and what to publish. Humans interface with computers in a very different way than they do with paper and ink documents. Mere conversion of paper and ink documents to HTML may not be useful to customers. In addition, hypertext makes many paper and ink conventions obsolete. Because of the lower resolution on monitors, many users are not interested in reading long documents online but will print them and read them offline. Content to be read online requires authors to write short paragraphs using clear and concise prose. Content Delivery Agencies need to establish a strategy for content delivery that provides users with choices. Some content should be viewed, read, or browsed online while other content can best be made available in downloadable files. The choice of file formats used should be based on the following considerations: (1) the intended use of the material by the target audience; (2) the accessibility of the format to the target audience; (3) the type of material; and (4) the level of effort required to convert or prepare the material in the format.

    FTP for Windows - Design HTML Coding and Designing Web Pages
    Web pages are prepared in a special formatting language, HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language). HTML can be written in an ordinary text editor or word processor, but you will need to know the basic HTML codes. Alternatively you can use one of the page-creation programs which do a lot of the work for you. You will need: A text editor (e.g. Mac Write, Notepad, Wordpad) or word processor (e.g. Word) or 'helper' program (e.g. BBedit for Mac, HTML Notepad for Windows). and a web browser for viewing your pages Once you have coded your files in HTML you can add graphics, normally in GIF or JPEG format. Optional extras include audio and video files, download files, animated graphics, Java and Javascript. More information, including the full specification for HTML 4, is available from the World Wide Web Consortium at http://www.w3.com/

Before going any further it is worth mentioning that not all users are going to have browsers that support JavaScript. This means that when the page with the script embeded into it is loaded the script is displayed. To get round this problem you should insert two comments into your script. These extra lines need to typed in exactly as they are on this page to work. The effect of these comments, basically hides everything between them.
