    http://www.boydell.co.uk/afstore/boy1010af/
Myths and Legends of the British Isles RICHARD BARBER THE BRITISH ISLES have a long tradition of tales of gods, heroes and marvels, hinting at a mythology once as relevant to the races which settled the islands as the Greek and Roman gods were to the classical world.
The tales drawn together in this book, from a wide range of medieval sources, span the centuries from the dawn of Christianity to the age of the Plantagenets. The Norse gods which peopled the Anglo-Saxon past survive in Beowulf ; Cuchulainn, Taliesin and the magician Merlin take shape from Celtic mythology; and saints include Helena who brought a piece of the True Cross to Britain, and Joseph of Arimathea whose staff grew into the Glastonbury thorn.
Tales of the British Arthur are followed by legends of later heroes, including Harold, Hereward and Godiva. These figures and many others were part of a familiar national mythology on which Shakespeare drew for Lear, Macbeth and Hamlet, creating the famous versions that are known today. Here the original stories are presented again.

    Studies in Christianity and Culture
    ABSTRACT
The Imagined Crusade: The Church of England and the Mythology of Nationalism and Christianity during the Great War
by Shannon Ty Bontrager The Church of England being the state church of an imperial nation of diverse peoples and creeds had to contend with provocative controversies in the early twentieth century leading up to the First World War. Perhaps the greatest was secularization, which gained momentum in the previous century. The last fifty years of the nineteenth century proved threatening for church leaders. Horace Mann’s 1851 religious census in England and Wales, although controversial, insinuated church attendance was much lower in Great Britain than previously perceived. Causing more anxiety, the State Church consistently lost authority over many of its traditions, including administering burial grounds and the last rights ceremony. Additionally Ecclesiastical courts gave up authority to the civic courts of British society. This study looks at wartime articles from Anglican journals the Church Quarterly Review and The Quiver status quo antebellum definition of English national identity was an attempt to regain cultural power and political influence from secular forces. As the end of the war drew closer, the crisis-phase climaxed and church officials abandoned their strategy focusing instead on asserting their conservative influence in the postwar world. In this the post-crisis phase, any leverage gained was quickly lost. In the aftermath of war, secularization dominated and the Anglican conservative revolution failed.

This list should provide a sampling of the poetry deemed worthy of inclusion in the library of a man or woman of letters in the mid-19th century. (How many today have the works of Thomas Tickell on their bookshelves?)

The beliefs of ancient man had a major effect on his behaviour and actions and is therefore of great use in understanding anthropological and archaeological data. Mythical Lands BRITISH (CELTIC) At the centre of all Celtic mythology was the Earth Goddess, a symbol of life and fertility. Much of the ideology was based upon the concepts of Earth power, a system of lines and nodes upon which monuments and temples were built. The few written records are contained in the Irish 'Book of Leinster' and 'Book of the Dun cow' and the Welsh 'Mobinogian'. GREEK AND ROMAN The early Greeks worshipped the Earth (Ge or Gaia) as a symbol of life and fertility. Her husband was Uranus, the heavans. Their children were called the Titans. The height of the religion was at about the time of ancient Greece when the Olympians emerged along with many other minor dieties. These beliefs were absorbed into the Roman empire in the 2nd century BC and adapted to match their own.

This point in particular, attracted many a foreign invaders to lay hands over this nation - known for her rich culture, wealth as well as tradition. India has always seen a variety of religions taking birth in different parts of the country an as a result, a natural tolerance grew for different groups following different religion types. However, as evil follows good, rifts took birth too. And one has been seeing bloodshed over matters of religious bias time and again. India has seen a variety of rulers including Persians, Greeks, Chinese nomads, Arabs, Portuguese, British and other raiders all of whom conquered over the local Hindu kingdoms who invariably survived their depradations, living out their own sagas of conquest and collapse.

David Frum's Guide to Mythology, Part II
    L
ast week we looked at Mr David Frum , and we found him so incredible and fantastic that we felt we'd have to come back and look at him some more this week. Our initial interest in him was excited by this stray Canuck being inflicted on right wing British newspaper-readers as a guide to all things relating to US foreign policy. We were suspicious; we had a good long stare at his terribly naughty fib Britain and Europe think the United States is in the grip of some phantom 'Jewish lobby'. There were three other 'myths' that Mr Frum affected to believe we on this side of the Atlantic are prey to: that the war is 'about oil'; that it is a 'Bush family vendetta'; and that, the US is a 'rogue state'. And then, ever so daringly, Mr Frum produced a neocon rabbit out his mooseskin hat: 'America is subverting the Middle East'. Paper tigers, each and very one of his myths, but the rhetoric that handles them out into public view is worth examining, and, most importantly, we have to see what David Frum is boasting about as regards current US foreign policy. Whether his crowing is more wish-fulfilment than accurate summary remains to be determined.
