General Description:
The University of Chicago London Program provides students in the College with an opportunity to study British literature and history in the cultural and political capital of England. In the course of this autumn-quarter, ten-week program students take four courses. Three of these are literature and history courses , each compressed into approximately three weeks and taught in succession by Chicago faculty. The fourth course, on the history of London, runs throughout the term at a less intensive pace. London itselfEngland's glittering capital, with a history dating from Roman times, once the metropolitan hub of the British Empireis central to the mission of this program, and it is expected that program participants will make a serious project of exploring its corners. Toward this end the program includes a number of field trips both within and in the vicinity of London (possible sites, varying from year to year, include Bath, Canterbury, Cambridge, etc.). Program headquarters is a facility operated by the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in the Bloomsbury section of London.

Education Literature Datasets Agreement
Note: At the request of JISC the CHEST/Education Literature Datasets Agreement has now been extended to run until 31st July 2003. The Agreement Overview has been updated to reflect the changes in the Agreement Period and Price. All other details remain the same. Sites wishing to continue to have access will be required to sign a new licence (Schedule 4) - see below. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION These pages cover the Education Literature Datasets agreement with Ovid Technologies Incorporated for the British Education Index (BEI) and Education Resources in Education (ERIC). ERIC is a bibliographic database that indexes over 775 periodicals covering the subject of education. Targeted at teachers, administrators and other educational professionals, ERIC combines information from two sources, namely Resources in Education (RIE) and the Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). BEI is compiled and edited at the University of Leeds, and offers a valuable complementary resource with a stronger focus on British literature. The BEI indexes over 350 British education and training periodicals, with developing coverage of national report and conference literature. The Index also includes references with direct links to texts in the Education-line database which is produced by the BEI office and is freely accessible over the internet. The indexing vocabulary used by the BEI is closely modelled on ERIC practice to facilitate searching across the databases.

General Numismatic Bibliography
Compiled for NBS by Larry Mitchell
Email: numislit@yahoo.com
Last Updated on August 3, 2001 This bibliography is a work in progress. Our goal here is very simple: to identify major English-language references in a variety of numismatic disciplines. Please note: most standard references are written in the language of the country with which the reference is concerned (e.g., the major standard references on German numismatics are written in the German language, not in English). Moreover, many of the standard references on ANCIENT and MEDIEVAL numismatics are written in German or French, not in English. Finally, due to demands on the compiler's time, the bibliography which follows covers only BOOKS, even though many of the standard references in ALL numismatic disciplines are ARTICLES that have appeared only in periodicals. Accordingly, if you are an advanced collector, or if you are seeking references in a language other than English, you are strongly encouraged to visit the LIBRARY CATALOG search engine of the American Numismatic Society

The University of Virginia
September, 2002
The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library acquires printed books, manuscripts, maps, broadsides, photographs, prints and drawings, sheet music, sound recordings, digital images, artifacts, and other formats in support of the Library's mission to serve the undergraduate and graduate teaching and research programs of the University.
This is the Special Collections Library's general policy that documents major collections and guides collecting in targeted areas. The current list of priorities covers areas in which we have fund support for purchases. Gifts in all areas are sought and considered.
COLLECTING RATIONALE
The Special Collections Library acquires materials that support teaching and research at the University and builds on existing strengths. In addition we actively seek new initiatives and acquire new collections in anticipation of or response to changing academic needs and interests. We are also committed to developing unique and distinctive collections in areas which have little coverage elsewhere.

Courses offered by the Department of English seek to develop students' understanding of important works of literature written in English, to provide a historical awareness of the range of thought and experience that has found expression in the English language, and to enlarge students' personal horizons by reflection upon cultural, social, and aesthetic experience. The development of this kind of knowledge also means a development of students' ability to express themselves effectively in speech and in writing. Courses in English instruct students in becoming more observant, thoughtful, and articulate in response to what they read.
Students who graduate with a major in English pursue careers as writers, lawyers, journalists, librarians, academic and governmental administrators, and publishers, to name a few. Large businesses, for example, publish "in-house" newsletters and magazines, as well as material for the general public. Newspapers seek copy editors able to write clear, accurate prose. The legal profession requires people skilled in the language arts. Many English majors go on to graduate or professional schools to educate themselves for professional careers.
    The department regularly offers courses in creative writing (EGL 285, 286, 385, 386), Journalism (JRN 287, 288, 387, 388, 389, 390, 394, 395), and secondary education leading to provisional New York State certification (EGL 398, 451, 452,454).

Graduate Degree Requirements The following areas are available: Master of Arts in English Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing, Gateway Writing Project Admission Requirements
A candidate should have a bachelor's degree, with at least 18 hours in English courses.  Normally only students with a grade point average of at least 3.0 in undergraduate English courses and with an overall undergraduate average of 2.75 will be considered. The graduate coordinator of the English Department with the advice of the graduate committee will use the undergraduate record and the scores of the GRE general test as the basis for a decision. We welcome letters of recommendation from the applicant's former English instructors, but they are not required. Applications to the MA in English are considered at all times. However, because spaces in graduate courses are limited, it is strongly advised that prospective students submit their applications well before the semester begins in order to gain admission into their appropriate classes. Teaching Assistantships
A number of teaching assistantships are available for qualified applicants. In addition to the undergraduate record and the scores on the GRE general test, applications should include two letters of recommendation from former English instructors. Applications should be submitted to the graduate coordinator of the English department no later than March 15 preceding the academic year for which the appointment is desired.
