Functional Illiterates in the World Number 855 million
Unicef data indicate that there are around 855 million people that read without understanding what they read. They write their name or even a few phrases yet they are unable to interpret text. They are functional illiterates. According to the Brazilian 2000 Census, the head of the household in one in every three Brazilian families is illiterate. Literacy is the first step to opening up horizons for every human being. The illiterate is not a useless person, but the fact that he or she does not know how to read brings about numerous limitations and frustrations. These elements affect the illiterate’s personal life and professional life. Reiko Niimi, Unicef representative in Brazil, reminds Brazil that the country celebrates National Literacy Training Day on the 14th of this month. The Ayrton Senna Institute and Nokia are in partnership with the entire country on the Se Liga or Tune In project. This project focuses on students from the ages of 11 to 14 that have a high degree of illiteracy. According to Unicef, there are over 130 million school-age children in developing countries that do not have access to education. Unfortunately, a portion of these children are Brazilian. The illiteracy rate in Brazil is 13.3% for people over ten years of age. This represents the second highest number in Latin America, only surpassed by Bolivia. Although around 4% of Brazilian children from seven to 14 years of age are not registered in school, the illiteracy rate is 20%.

The Brazilian Embassy - Hot Link! http://www.brazil.org.uk/
Infolondres Brazilian Embassy in London website includes a whole range of links and resources including an online version of "Brazil in the School" which was originated and supported by the Embassy, written by two well-known consultants in geographical education, Keith Orrell and Pat Wilson, the resource pack was distributed to all schools in the UK. It is designed to help teachers planning their programmes for Key Stage 3 and for GCSE and for Scottish Standard Grade examinations. It should also be of value as introductory reading for students working for A/AS Level and Higher Grade syllabuses. The site also includes basic information about Brazil with maps and photographs integrated in with text. The site is very useful at providing the Brazilian governments perspective on issues. At the time of writing, for example the site included a press response to a recent WWF report about deforestation levels in the Amazon, from the government's perspective. Access is also provided to an extensive range of statistical data about Brazil. The site is accompanied with Brazilian music.
