A SERENE PARADISE
Arboretum Activities Art In The Arboretum Luminary Walk Ecosystems ... Environmental Education/Visitor's Center
Nestled among mature trees with paths to solitude, the 300 acre Arboretum and Botanical Gardens allows you to lose track of time and forget about the worries of the day.
The Arboretum, located less than a mile west of U.S. Highway 69 on 179th Street, exemplifies Overland Park's vision to remain in the forefront of environmental and ecological initiatives.
Goals to bring educational, recreational and cultural opportunities to the facility support that vision.
Nearly 85 percent of the property will be dedicated to the preservation and restoration of natural ecosystems.
The remaining portion will include traditional botanical gardens, a 16,000 square foot visitors center, an 8,000 square foot conservatory, as well as a maintenance facility. To date, early gardens include the Erickson Water Garden, the Marder Woodland Garden, the Legacy Garden, the Rotary Children's Garden and an authentic Native American Medicine Wheel. All these have been made possible by donations from individuals and local organizations. Coming soon will be WaterDistrict No. 1's Xeriscape Garden and a garden reminiscent of Monet's at Giverny.

The Gardens at Spetchley are amongst the finest in the country. Set in beautiful countryside in the heart of Worcestershire, they extend over 30 acres and include many rare trees, shrubs and plants which are of interest to both the professional and amateur gardener. It is truly a horticultural paradise.
As you tour around the gardens at Spetchley, sights to feast your eyes on include the Kitchen Garden, the New Millennium Garden featuring many Mediterranean plants, the Fountain Gardens, the Conservatory, Rose Lawn and Cork Lawn. Arches, statues, an iron footbridge and a thatched summer house are all features which add to the interest.
Spetchley is predominantly a Victorian garden where you will find most aspects of gardening - the formal and informal, woodland and herbaceous. It is a garden full of secrets, every corner reveals more beauty, exquisite fragrances and treasures of the plant world. The exuberant planting and peaceful walks make this an oasis of tranquility. You will find a rare collection of plants, seldom found outside the major botanical gardens.
The Deer Park, which is host to a herd of red and fallow deer, is wonderful for walking and has open spaces for children to roam and play. It is truly a beautiful setting for the Victorian Mansion which overlooks the lake and enjoys views of the Malvern Hills and Bredon Hill in the distance.

The Northern Horticultural Society was founded in 1946 with the objective of 'promoting and developing the science, art and practice of horticulture with special reference to the conditions pertaining to the North of England'. The Society leased 10.5 hectares of mixed woodland, pasture and arable land at Harlow Hill from Harrogate Corporation and opened the Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens in 1950.The chief aim was to set up a trial ground where the suitability of plants for growing in northern climates could be assessed. The original 10.5 hectares has been extended to 27.5 and the merger with the RHS will ensure that Harlow Carr becomes a premier botanic garden in the North of England.
The Gardens stand on what was once part of the Forest of Knaresborough, an ancient royal hunting ground. Springs of sulphur water were discovered here in 1734 but development of the site as a spa did not take place for over a hundred years. In 1840, Henry Wright, the owner of the estate, cleaned out and protected one of the wells and four years later built a hotel and a bath house. People came to bathe in the warm waters for which they were charged 2s 6d (12.5 new pence). Gardens were laid out around the bath house and in 1861 the site at Harlow Carr springs was described as a 'sweet secluded spot...the grounds neatly laid out, adorned with a selection of trees, shrubs, flowers, walks, easy seats and shady arbours'.

Mission Statement: Under its Congressional charter , the privately-funded National Tropical Botanical Garden administers gardens of extraordinary beauty and historical significance, advancing scientific research, public education, and plant conservation. The National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to the conservation of tropical plant diversity, particularly rare and endangered species. Medicine, food, shelter - the potential uses of many plant species are not known. Yet they are becoming extinct at an alarming rate. Located in the only tropical and sub-tropical regions in the United States, the gardens and preserves of the NTBG are "Noah's Arks" for this threatened plant life. NTBG's work in scientific research, plant exploration, propagation, and education is all supported by contributions from people like you.
