A garden is both an asset and a valuable source of relaxation and recreation. A well designed garden creates a personal space that enhances privacy and complements the surroundings. With a knowledge of the climate, soil and local conditions, a well-designed garden will almost take care of itself, with healthy plants resisting weeds and disease, and requiring minimal maintenance.

Bonsai
Presenter: Jerry Coleby-Williams [24/1/2003]
Plants grow in some very hostile places, on mountaintops, rock faces, coastal dunes and cliff faces. An array of woody plants can be found that are naturally gnarled, stunted and deformed in any landscape. From their exposure to extreme environmental conditions including animals and humans, these plants develop a different appearance to their counterparts that inhabit more protected areas.
It is easy to see where the inspiration comes from for the creation of bonsai. We can create a similar effect to nature by using simple horticultural principles, such as careful pruning of branches and roots and in some cases wiring the specimen into a desired shape.
What is a bonsai? Bon-sai is Chinese (same in Japanese) for potted tree. Although bonsai is defined as the art and science of growing miniature trees and shrubs in decorative pots, simply having a tree in a pot does not necessarily make it a bonsai. A bonsai is an artistic replica of a natural tree/s in miniature form and exists only in a pot or container as a work of art with expert care and manipulation of the plant. The Chinese first practiced the art of growing miniature trees. These are handed down as prized family heirlooms, so some are extremely old and very valuable.
The aim of bonsai is to create a picture of how we see nature on a miniature scale, using living plant material that has been carefully trained and pruned. Bonsai is as much a visual art as is painting or sculpture. It must have all the aesthetic requirements of a painting - composition, balance, perspective, depth, texture, colour etc. Visual impact on the viewer is important. If it looks like a real tree, expressing its true beauty and majesty, then the bonsai artist will have succeeded.

Katie Caring For Bonsai

by Ellen DuBois
I have several Bonsai trees of various varieties and have learned through trial and error that their care is very involved. Out of the many aspects of care, the one that people ask me about the most is Shaping. I am no expert in this matter, but I do have experience which has proven to be successful. I have also done a tremendous amount of research on the subject not only out of a love of the Bonsai, but to protect my investment as well. These small trees are not inexpensive! When you look at a well shaped Bonsai, what do you see? A flowing form that captures the eye. To obtain this, you don't simply begin pruning and snipping away with no plan in mind. This is where the "Rule of Thirds" comes into play. I found this information while conducting my research, and it's proven very helpful. Simply put, the Rule of Thirds is an aid to designing the shape of your Bonsai. Take the total space of your plant and its container and divide it into thirds both horizontally and vertically. This gives you the proper "division of space" before you prune and allows you to get the results you desire: a properly shaped miniature tree. You always want to look at the front, back, and sides of your Bonsai before touching it. Also, look at its roots so you can connect them with the areas of the tree's growth.

"If you get too many, you cannot take care of them like you should," says Richard, a member of the Virginia Bonsai Society. When selecting plant material to create a bonsai, Richard suggests looking for a tapering trunk, well-defined root system and a leaf size proportionate to the tree you want to create. Bonsai plants need excellent drainage and the right potting medium. Richard uses a mix of bark, poultry grit and turface, which Richard says is a fired clay that retains water. Osmocote is his choice of fertilizer. A garden-variety juniper is an excellent choice for your first bonsai plant, says Richard. It can be trained in all styles and sizes of bonsai and can be kept indoors in a sunny window or left protected outdoors during winter. "You start bringing them down in size, then develop fine branching," says Richard. "You take what Mother Nature gives you and go from there."

80. Bonsai - Golden Acre Gardening Guide
bonsai does not refer to a type of plant but rather describes a method of pruningand shaping to create an illusion of a very old tree in miniature.
http://www.goldenacregarden.com/houseplants/bonsai.htm

Choosing A Bonsai Plant

Bonsai does not refer to a type of plant but rather describes a method of pruning and shaping to create an illusion of a very old tree in miniature. It is placed in a small pot which further restricts root growth and therefore plant size. A bonsai can be created from any plant which develops a woody trunk and tolerates pruning well. Bonsai can be created from tropical plants, perennials with woody stems, deciduous shrubs and evergreens. There are several forms, such as formal upright, cascade, forest and windswept. The easiest bonsai to care for, if you are a beginner, is a tropical plant. A weeping fig , for example, grows well in our homes, so will continue to do so after it is pruned and repotted. Also suitable are boxwood (Buxus), Fukien Tea (Carmona), myrtle (Myrtus), Natal plum (Carissa) and Tree of a Thousand Stars (Serissa). Deciduous shrubs and woody perennials need a cold, dormant period in the winter, just as if they were growing outdoors. Plants such as white or paper birch (Betula), crabapple (Malus), Siberian elm (Ulmus), Cotoneaster, and pygmy caragana form attractive bonsai. During the winter they need to be kept in a cold but frost-free place and need little light after they have lost their leaves. Close to but not touching a cold window in a cool room is suitable. A garage heated to just above freezing, or a root cellar, may be appropriate, or the plant may be buried in the ground to just above the pot rim and mulched well over winter. They can't be kept outdoors in a pot above the ground during the winter, as the soil temperature fluctuates dramatically during our weather changes.
