Country List Bolivia Introduction Top of Page Background: Bolivia, named after independence fighter Simon BOLIVAR, broke away from Spanish rule in 1825; much of its subsequent history has consisted of a series of nearly 200 coups and counter-coups. Comparatively democratic civilian rule was established in the 1980s, but leaders have faced difficult problems of deep-seated poverty, social unrest, and drug production. Current goals include attracting foreign investment, strengthening the educational system, continuing the privatization program, and waging an anti-corruption campaign. One of the two inland countries of South America, Bolivia is shut in from the Pacific in the W by Chile and Peru; in the E and N it borders on Brazil, in the SE on Paraguay, and in the S on Argentina. Sucre is the constitutional capital and seat of the judiciary, but La Paz is the largest city, political and commercial focus of the nation, and the administrative capital and seat of government. Despite the harsh conditions the altiplano is the population center of Bolivia. Many sections for want of drainage have brackish lakes and salt beds, notably the extensive Salar de Uyuni in the south. In the north are Lake Titicaca, which Bolivia shares with Peru, and Lake Poopó. This region, world famous for its breathtaking scenery, was the home of one of the great pre-Columbian civilizations. Well known are the ruins of Tiahuanaco. More than half its population is indigenous, although the citizens of European descent (some 5% to 15% of the people) or mixed European and native ancestry (about 25% to 30% of the population) maintain economic, political, and social hegemony. The predominant native languages are Aymará and Quechua; they and Spanish are Bolivia's official languages. A few indigenous groups have remained isolated from European culture. Most of the population is Roman Catholic, although many people of indigenous descent retain the substance of their pre-Christian beliefs. A small but extremely active Protestant minority also exists. There are eight universities in the country.

Pablo Regalsky , an Argentinean now living in Bolivia, runs a non-government organisation working with indigenous highland communities in the Andes. Recently he became the joint director of a postgraduate programme on intercultural education in Bolivia. After recently completing his full time MPhil on "Ethnicity and class in the indigenous movement in Bolivia" in Geography he is now keen to pursue a PhD on "Indigenous notions of jurisdictional space in the Andes". Due to work and funding commitments he will initially start this PhD part-time with the support of a one-year bursary he has been awarded by Geography. In the future he hopes to find other sources of funding to convert his programme to full time study. In 1995, Boris Pajkovic gained an MA in European Studies from the Central European University, Prague (now in Budapest, Hungary), where his studies were supported by a scholarship received from the Open Society Foundation. He then came to Newcastle University to pursue an MA in International Political Economy.

, the coastal area, is semi-arid to arid. It stretches the Pacific coastline from north to south. Most parts, except for the entire north, consist of desert ,and rainfall is very low in this area. However, many rivers from the Andesflow through the region towards the Pacific, thus creating fertile rivervalleys. The capital Lima is situated inthe coastal area.

Bolivia is a very diverse country, both in its geography and culture. Its territory ranges from the dense low land jungles of the Amazon to the perpetual snow covered mountain ranges of the Andes. The Bolivian people come from a mixture of cultures from the old Inca empire, Aymara tribes, Guarani tribes, Amazon people, Europeans, and immeigrants from all over the world. Because of its location and the kindness of its people, Bolivia is refered to as the heart of South America. The following links show a glimpse of this wonderful and diverse country.

    Physical geography
Bolivia is situated in the centre of South America. It encompasses 424,194 square miles and has borders with Brazil to the north and east, with Argentina to the south, and with Peru to the west. On the southeast of Bolivia lies the border with Paraguay, while to the southwest lies that with Chile.
    Climate
Although all of Bolivia is located within the Tropic of Capricorn, the country enjoys the full spectrum of existing climates. The temperature is not only regulated by geographical location, but also by the altitude above sea level; temperatures are lower at higher altitudes and higher at lower altitudes.
Due to its proximity to the Equator, the four seasons are not marked with much differentiation in contrast to other continents. The variation of temperatures between winter and summer is less than 10 degrees C.
    Economic geography
Until 1986 the production of minerals such as tin, gold, silver, zinc, lead and others constituted the economic basis of Bolivia. However, the drop in prices in the international markets obligated the state to close important mining companies for the purpose of levelling its balance of payments. Currently, Bolivia's economy thrives on minerals, livestock and agro-industrial riches.
Bolivia also has rich petroleum deposits and refineries which meet the country's needs. It uses natural gas to generate energy, which it sells to the Republic of Argentina, and it also has agreements to export energy to Brazil and Chile. In the agricultural sector, due to the distinctive topographic characteristics of the country, there is an extensive range of different products from the tropical regions, the valleys and the high mountains.

Field trip in the Andean Cloud Forests of Bolivia
Expeditions in July, August 1997, February / March 2000 and August 2002
In these tropical mountain forest areas we investigated land use patterns and soil erosion, especially between 2500 and 3500 m above sea level. Establishing a Geographic Information System (GIS) and using satellite images (LANDSAT TM) as well as aerial fotos, Nicole Allet and Lars Waser realized a first field trip in 1997. By drawing large scale maps, they developed detection methods which allowed to make preliminary interpretations. In the study area, many human impacts were evidently caused by wood exploitation and burning for agricultural needs or by constructions of roads and hydroelectric installations. Further results were obtained in February and March 2000 in the MSc thesis from Christian aMarca and Giar Lunghi. In theirs MSc thesis maps of vegetation in the years 1975 and 1996 were generated.
In our future studies we plan to get more details about the vegetation cover, i.e. the different forest communities, and about the intensity of precipitations and natural hazards. The project, including the organisation of the field studies in Bolivia, is coordinated by Prof. Kurt Graf, Dept. of Physical Geography. On the other hand, the technical support with satellite imagery is guaranteed by Prof. Klaus Itten, Dept. of Remote Sensing.
