Who Are You? Prospective Students Accepted Students Advisors/Faculty Parents ... Requires free Adobe Acrobat Reader Stretching from the tropical Amazon to the soaring Andes, Bolivia's diverse landscapes and populations offer amazing contrasts as well as significant challenges to development. While the increasingly influential Quechua and Aymara peoples make up the majority of Bolivia's population, an urban-based mestizo minority remains the dominant power in Bolivian society, resulting in economic policies that often exclude many Bolivians. Your program explores the key role played by cultural processes, identities, and resources in defining who "develops" and how. Field excursions to the tropical lowlands and the altiplano, including spectacular Lake Titicaca and the world’s highest capital city, La Paz, give you opportunities to observe social and cultural life in both urban and rural Bolivia. Visits to development agencies and seminars on the history of Bolivian social movements enhance your understanding of this predominantly indigenous developing nation.

    Bolivia
    Culture
Musical traditions within Bolivia are distinctly regional: strains of Andean music from the desolate Altiplano are suitably haunting and mournful, while those of warmer Tarija, with its compliment of bizarre musical instruments, take on more ebullient tones. Dances such as the cueca auqui-auqui and tinku hold a reverent place in popular culture. Other forms of folk expression include spinning and weaving, which display regional differences but have changed little over the last 3000 years. Bolivia's food is dominated by meat dishes, accompanied by rice, potatoes and shredded lettuce. Sometimes llajhua (a hot sauce made from tomatoes and pepper pods) will be used to add spice and flavor to a dish. Bolivian beer, wine and chicha (industrial-strength maize liquor) are all good but be warned: if invited to drink with locals, be prepared as the alcohol is strong and Bolivian drinking habits lusty.

    ANCESTRY: RELIGION, DEATH AND CULTURE
Master of Fine Arts Show, Spring 1994
    University of California, San Diego
    by Belinda Di Leo
The paintings in Ancestry: Religion, Death and Culture document my own native culture of Central Appalachia. The work portrays a sense of place and character, as well as spiritual conviction, all reinforced by a repetition of visual imagery. Through the juxtaposition of a variety of images, the paintings explore the interrelationship between religion and the inevitability of death. In this series of work, I began a visual exploration of Appalachian culture with paintings of the self-supportive farm in southwestern Virginia. The farm originally came into my family as a portion of a Revolutionary War Grant. Several hundred acres had been divided with each generation. As a result, neighbors within the local farming community had descended from common ancestry.
    Part I: Appalachian Imagery
The Place of the Ancestors, O/C 4' x 5', 1993 The landscape is a view from the hillside where these ancestors are buried. The scene is of life: the vegetable garden, rolls of hay, and weathered buildings for the raising of livestock. For the ancestors, continuity was through their descendants whose existence was in turn sustained by the land. Family Cemetery O/C 42" x 42" 1993 To me, the land was a sacred place. There, I could form a relationship with people not physically alive, but whose presence could be felt nevertheless. Having this connection to family history reinforced the knowledge that my own existence was merely a link between past and future. I was reminded that the choices I make will effect the lives of people who will never know me. In Family Cemetery, one sees the image of a gravestone marking an ancestral burial site. Across the top of the painting I have added "One day I will be one of the ancestors."

With elevations ranging from sea level to over 21,000 feet, the Bolivia landscape offers a mind blowing array of complex ecosystems and stunning scenery. Bolivia is also home to the largest indigenous population in the Americas. With over 50% of it's population maintaining traditional lifestyles and beliefs, Bolivia is a cultural treasure that is only now being appreciated, discovered and studied. Approximately the size of France and Spain combined, Bolivia can be broken into five geographic regions - the stark Altiplano, the lush Yungas, the fertile highland valleys, the scrubland of the Chaco, and the impenatrable Amazon Basin. Most of the population lives on the Altiplano and highland valleys. It's on these windswept plans and high valleys where the birth of Andean culture can be found. In archological sites like Tiahuanaco near La Paz and Quechua villages like those near Hacienda Candelaria, visitors can feel the ancient spirits of the Andes and begin to understand the rich cultural heritage that is Bolivia.

Country Info Bolivia Introduction Bolivia General Data Bolivia Maps Bolivia Culture ... Bolivia Time and Date Bolivia Culture Back to Top In dress, language, architecture, and lifestyle, the large Native American population follows the ways of its ancestors with a mixture of modified Spanish traditions. Clothing is colorful and suited to life in high altitudes. For example, many Bolivian women wear brightly colored Native American clothing and stovepipe or derby hats. Holidays and religious festivals are celebrated by dancing and festivities. The Spanish-speaking population, which is largely European in ancestry, has adopted some of the Native American customs but generally follows Western traditions. The daily dress of highland Indian women in both the urban and rural regions remains traditional: very full skirts (polleras) and colourful shawls. The latter are usually stuffed with goods being taken to market for sale, as well as with fresh purchases, extra clothing, and a baby, all in a carefully balanced bundle on the back, leaving both hands free. Hats always complete the outfit, their shapes varying with the different regions of Bolivia.
