2000 Years of Change – Evolution of Portuguese Language
Vocabulary and False Cognates
1. Abstract 2. Development of the Portuguese Language We know very little about the languages of the peoples that inhabited the Iberian peninsula prior to Rome's invasion. Due to the limited historical records and lack of written manuscripts, it is difficult to determine that impact these prehistoric languages may have had on the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Western part of the peninsula and subsequent influence on the development of the Portuguese language. One exception to this is the ancient Basque language spoken on the peninsula before the Roman Armies, a few words of which are found in modern Portuguese, such as cachorro (dog). Experts agree that the influence of these languages on the development of the modern Portuguese lexicon was insignificant, and that "Latin became established in the peninsula and finally replaced the native languages" (Camara 8-9). For over 500 hundred years Rome occupied the Iberian peninsula, occupied by Spain and Portugal. With its soldiers, Rome also sent its citizens to inhabit the land. As a general rule, the farther the country from Rome, the more informal the daily speech. The Portuguese language, which evolved from spoken Latin, developed on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula (now Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia) included in the province the Romans called Lusitania. According to Bueno, Roman manuscripts from Portuguese part of the peninsula show a greater number of vulgarism than those from the Spanish part (Bueno, 16). The fact that so many languages developed from the Vulgar Latin is a testimony to the force of that language, and to the human and linguistic interaction within the Roman Empire. It is however the immense size of the Empire and the primitive means of communication that sets the stage for the development of several distinct Romance languages, including Portuguese.

African Union — The African Union (AU) should play a centre-stage economic role to help African countries move rapidly towards social progress, the Egyptian Ambassador to France, Ali Maher Al Sayed said in Paris, on 23 May . Al Sayed, who is also the dean of the African diplomatic corps in Paris, emphasised that only a strong economic and political union of African States can help the continent surmount the current challenges. «I remain deeply convinced that through unity, all 53 countries of the continent will be able to make important accomplishments for themselves and for their peoples,», he said. The Egyptian diplomat described NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) as an initiative that would enable Africa to organise its priorities better and make external contribution more efficient. Africa is not looking for charity from the rest of the world, Al Sayed observed, saying that development partners who accept to be involved in NEPAD «will be helping themselves».
