Teaching teachers to teach Braille

Maxine Beck was just a little girl growing up in Talladega when she discovered she had a special place in her heart for blind people. Now, as a case manager for the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind’s Helen Keller School in Talladega, Beck has realized a career that enables her to have impact in the lives of visually impaired children every day. Her work at the Helen Keller School includes interviewing students’ parents and providing information that aids in the services and assistance the students receive at school. “Along with those things, I ask for the parents’ concerns and questions about their children, and write a reference for anyone who interacts with the children at school,” Beck said. She travels to students’ homes all over the state, collecting information that includes what the children’s’ responsibilities are at home, how parents discipline their children and any medical or behavioral concerns. Beck has worked at the Helen Keller School for 10 years now, and is currently working to complete a master’s degree in special education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received her bachelor’s degree from Talladega College and certification in visual impairment from UAB. Before joining the staff of the Helen Keller School, Beck worked for Cheaha Mental Health.

Have you ever wondered These days, the 69 children who attend the state School for the Blind in Batavia are at an even greater disadvantage. Besides being legally blind, they may also have impaired hearing, autism, retardation or other developmental disabilities. Helping these children sort out their world and feel comfortable and confident in it is an extraordinary challenge. The PEF members and other staff at the school are uniquely qualified by specialized training and, in many cases, decades of experience. "We provide a very essential service. There is a combination of experience, training and expertise here that can’t be found anywhere else in the state. We make a real difference in the lives of these children and their families," said PEF member Kathy Carlsen, an instructor at the school for the past 35 years.

Orientation and Mobility Specialists work closely with people who are blind or visually impaired to help them develop the skills necessary for independent and safe travel. The use of the sighted guide technique, the long cane, and electronic travel aids are some of the systematic techniques by which blind or visually impaired people orient themselves to their surroundings and move about safely and efficiently. Orientation and Mobility Specialists also monitor and support the development of the basic concepts, sensory skills and protective techniques for safe travel.
Daily professional activities of Orientation and Mobility Specialists may include interviewing and making assessments and referrals as well as providing direct, one-on-one orientation and mobility services. Some opportunities are available in low-vision clinics for assessing vision and determining training needs.

Blind contour drawings are practice drawings made up entirely of lines. They are called blind contour drawings because you can't look at your drawing until you are done! Blind contour drawings will help you train your eyes to see the shapes and edges as you draw. Your hand will record every detail slowly and accurately. Remember! No peeking!

Keys Blind contour drawings make look a little strange but they'll help you draw better! 1. When you make a contour drawing you draw only the edges or outlines of the shapes you see. There is no shading. Contour lines show the edges and outlines of shapes. A blind contour is drawn the same way as a contour drawing except you do not look at your drawingyou only look at the object. They might look a little strange but they are not scribbles or even gesture drawings! 2. To make a blind contour drawing, choose an interesting object to draw. Objects with lots of edges, wrinkles, or other details are the most fun.

Although this is not our area of expertise, we get requests for this information often enough that we thought we should provide a few links (just to get you started). Please note that we cannot answer further questions on these topics, it's just not our area of expertise.
We haven't been able to find many links for dogs that are both deaf and blind (or very vision impaired), if you know of more, please let us know! The tips that follow were contributed by members of the DeafDogs list at Yahoo!Groups.
  • - this is probably the best source of information. It's a fairly new list (August, 2001), but already has quite a few members. This list has public archives, so you can read what people have said even without joining (although you need to join to be able to ask questions).

Insufficient training in using computers and standard software is particularly noticeable for blind and partially sighted persons. One of the main reasons is that visually impaired computer users are dependent on complicated assisting devices like Braille displays, artificial speech and screen enlargers. Course vendors usually do not have the necessary expertise to teach students using assisting devices and screen readers. The ECDL (European Computer Driving License) is a standardized course in practical computer usage. MediaLT A/S, Datakortet A/S and several Norwegian organizations for the blind are working together to develop a suitable certification scheme, accessible learning materials and a training model for the visually impaired. The ECDL syllabus is not modified. The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, Microsoft, Telenor and two Norwegian departments. The successful outcome of the first distant education ECDL pilot course, for blind and visually impaired users, represents an important milestone in this work. All four participants were successful in attaining the ECDL. This pilot project, which started in January 2002, has been particularly exciting, as it is one of the first of its kind in which blind and visually impaired students receive online teaching. And the response to the announcement of the pilot project, through The Norwegian Society for the Blind, is yet another illustration of the acute lack of education in computer skills for the blind and partially sighted.

This certificate is also valid for services as a Diagnostic Prescriptive Teacher (DPT) to this population.
  • PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE - valid for three (3) years
  • Completion of an approved program designed for the preparation of teachers of students who are blind/partially sighted within five (5) years from date of application. Those applicants who have not completed an approved program shall present evidence of a minimum of two hundred (200) clock hours of supervised student teaching or intern experience within the context of an approved teacher preparation program for students who are blind/partially sighted, and not less than twenty-four (24) semester hours of courses approved by the Department of Education for the preparation of teachers of students who are blind/partially sighted in the following content areas: Introduction to Education of Students who are Blind/Partially Sighted; Psychology of Students who are blind/partially sighted; Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Eye; Assessment for students who are blind/partially sighted; Curriculum and Methods for students who are blind/partially sighted; Fundamentals of Reading and Writing Braille; Foundations of Orientation and Mobility; Techniques of Working with the Severe/Multi-Disabled; and Behavior Management.
