How Satellites Track Threatened Birds and Animals

'Vodka' is an endangered Siberian Crane tracked by the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, which use satellites orbiting over Earth to monitor migration routes of endangered species. A wildlife-tracking satellite looking down on a wide area of the globe from its high vantage point is a useful tool for biologists, naturalists and conservationists working with animals, birds and fish in their natural environments.
Data collected through satellite tracking helps us understand and protect the endangered and threatened species of the world.
Scientists have attached tiny transmitters to wild animals for years, tracking their radio signals with receivers nearby on the ground. Now they track wildlife ranging over much wider areas with receivers high above the ground.
A receiver in an orbiting space satellite can hear a transmitter attached to an animal. Even if the animal is out of sight over the horizon from a tracker on the ground, a satellite high in space still can hear the transmitter and repeat its signal down to trackers on the ground.
How Animals Are Tracked
To track a bird or animal on the ground or in the air, scientists strap a tiny radio transmitter to the animal, bird or fish. Information collected from the animal, bird or fish is impressed on a signal sent from the transmitter up to a NOAA weather satellite orbiting far above Earth.

Bird Population Modeling
Applied Biomathematics has several current and recent projects related to the ecology and conservation of bird species. These projects involve data analysis on the dynamics of endangered and threatened species, developing models for extinction risk assessment, and performing population viability analysis with habitat-based metapopulation models linked to geographic information systems.
If you are not familiar with these concepts, you can read short introductory material in the following pages:
The following links point to the summaries of our bird studies.
California Gnatcatcher is a federally threatened subspecies inhabiting the coastal sage scrub community in southern California. The coastal sage scrub is a distinctive plant community that has declined due to extensive agricultural and urban development in this area. Our project involved an analysis of the dynamics of the California Gnatcatcher in central and coastal Orange County, California. For this analysis, we first developed and validated a habitat model for the species, using GIS data. We then used this habitat model as a basis of a metapopulation model, which included demographic data such as fecundity, survival, as well as variability in these demographic rates. California Least Tern is federally listed as an endangered species. Its nesting habitat has been degraded, and many colony sites are vulnerable to predation and human disturbance. In this study, we developed a metapopulation model for the California least tern that can be used to predict persistence of populations along the Pacific coast and the effects of various management actions.

Birdlife International's (2000) Threatened Birds of the World lists 1186 species as Endangered, Threatened, or Vulnerable. These include several (like Guam Rail Gallirallus owstoni or Socorro Dove Zenaida graysoni ) that are "extinct in the wild" but captive breeding populations exist and there is hope for eventual re-introductions into native habitat. Although a few birds are included that are almost surely extinct (e.g., Javanese Lapwing Vanellus macropterus , Imperial Woodpecker Campephilus imperialis , Ivory-billed Woodpecker C. principalis , Oahu 'Alauahio Paroreomyza maculata , Bachman's Warbler Vermivora bachmanii ) this does mean that over 10% of the birds in the world are threatened with extinction in the near future, almost all of them due to the destruction of habitat by man. Another 747 are more briefly summarized in an appendix as Near-Threatened; yet 79 more are considered "data deficient" to permit evaluation. Together this means that almost 1 out of every 5 species is slipping away from us. From a world birder's perspective, these lists bring together most of the great and fabulous birds on earth. These birds are the stuff of dreams. I thought it might be fun to do a series of web pages on those that I've been fortunate enough to encounter. As the concept for this series did not occur to me until April 2001, some of the pages linked below were written more as short "trip reports" on various adventures. Others are summarizes of occurrence (usually in California) or even identification discussions.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the first urban National Wildlife Refuge established in the United States, is dedicated to preserving and enhancing wildlife habitat, protecting migratory birds, protecting threatened and endangered species, and providing opportunities for wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study for the surrounding communities. As of 2002, the Refuge spans 23,000 acres of open bay, salt pond, salt marsh, mudflat, upland and vernal pool habitats located throughout south San Francisco Bay. Located along the Pacific Flyway, the Refuge hosts over 280 species of birds each year. Millions of shorebirds and waterfowl stop to refuel at the Refuge during the spring and fall migration. In addition to its seasonal visitors, the Refuge provides critical habitat to resident species like the endangered California clapper rail and salt marsh harvest mouse. Today, hundreds of thousands of people visit the Refuge each year to enjoy its diverse wildlife and habitats, The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is part of a complex made up of six other wildlife refuges in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1974 and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, It was renamed Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in 1995 in recognition of Congressman Don Edwards' efforts to protect sensitive wetlands in south San Francisco Bay.

The Board revises the list of protected species every five years and completed its most recent revisions in 1999. This following list relects those revisions. The next list revision will be completed in 2004. 1999 ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SPECIES LIST DEFINITIONS ** Federally Endangered Species: Any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. * Federally Threatened Species: Any species which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Illinois Endangered Species: Any species which is in danger of extinction as a breeding species in Illinois. State Threatened Species: Any breeding species which is likely to become a state endangered species within the foreseeable future in Illinois. CRITERIA FOR STATE LISTING A species shall be included on the official list of endangered and threatened species when one or more of the following criteria exists: (1) Species included in the Federal list of Endangered or Threatened Species, (2) Species proposed for Federal Endangered or Threatened Species which occur in Illinois, (3) Species which formerly were widespread in Illinois but have been nearly extirpated from the State due to habitat destruction, collecting, or other pressures resulting from the development of Illinois, (4) Species which exhibit very restricted geographic ranges of which Illinois is a part, (5) Species which exhibit restricted habitats or low populations in Illinois, or (6) Species which are significant disjuncts in Illinois (i.e., the Illinois population is far removed from the rest of the species' range).
