BIRDING IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
By Jon Hornbuckle
In June 1999, after four weeks in the Bismarck Archipelago off Papua New Guinea, during which we had been relieved of most of our possessions by some of the friendly islanders of Mussau (see Phil Gregory’s article in Australian Birding vol.5 no.4 pp. 11-15), Neil Bostock, Barry Wright, Keith Turner and I were ready to move east to the Solomon Islands. This group of mountainous islands, stretching some 1000km east to west, is one of the least visited regions in the Pacific, and holds a high number of restricted range and threatened species. We flew from Port Moresby, PNG, to Honiara on the main Solomon island of Guadalcanal. We were soon observing endemic parrots and flycatchers on nearby Mount Austen but were alarmed to hear there was trouble in the hills, with Guadalcanalese killing Malaitan settlers who were of course retaliating. This meant it would be unsafe to go into the mountains to look for the five montane endemics, including gems such as Moustached Kingfisher and Guadalcanal Thrush, unless things improved, which they did not. Everywhere else was peaceful and so over the next four weeks we were able to visit five of the major islands and four smaller islands in the western New Georgia group. We saw all 66 possible endemics and near-endemics on those islands except Fearful Owl, Malaita Fantail and Woodford’s Rail (excluding the probably extinct San Cristobal Moorhen and Thick-billed Ground-Dove). Everything went to plan except on Isabel where the boat we hired to take us to the Woodford’s Rail site capsized, thereby destroying my new camera and causing some other loss and damage. Nevertheless, I can still strongly recommend birding in the Solomons as highly rewarding, with many attractive and little-known birds to be found in a mostly safe and friendly environment.

91. Birding In Colombia
Site guides, photo gallery, books, and links.Category Recreation birding South America Colombia...... This aim of this site is provide an information guide to birding in Colombia. BirdlifeInternational. Good birding (especially in Colombia).
http://www.birding-colombia.com/
Colombia is usually one of those places you've heard mention, probably because of its drug problem, but never considered visiting. In reality the country is a birder's dream; with the highest species count of any country in the World, over 1810, it really is a must for any serious neotropical birder. This huge diversity of species results from the equally diverse range of habitats: three Andean Cordilleras, two inter-Andean valleys, the Amazon, Orinoco, Santa Marta, Pacific and Caribbean coasts, deserts and lakes, and the rich Chocó biogeographical region all help to make it one of the most varied in South America. As for the problems Colombia faces day to day, rarely will these affects the average tourist. My only recommendation is you learn some Spanish as this will make travelling around much easier as few people speak English. This aim of this site is provide an information guide to birding in Colombia. It explains who to contact and and how to get there. Should, once you have read this information, require further information please email me . The aim is to build up a full and comprehensive list of sites. Note: It is important to take local advice before travelling away from the principle tourist areas. If you are warned not to enter an area, under no circumstances go. On too many occasions advice has not been heeded and has resulted in kidnappings. Some good birding areas are guerrilla strong holds or are primary Coca growing areas. Any foreigner will be viewed with great suspicion.

Programs, field trips, and east Texas birding locations.

Tyler Audubon Society is devoted to the enjoyment and natural world. Through participation in birding, education and conservation ventures, we encourage East Texans to join us in our mission. The primary objective of the Tyler Audubon Society is to create an awareness of the natural world's beauty and problems by promoting an appreciation of birds, other wildlife and habitat, to promote an awareness of the environmental problems of the past, present and future, and to find solutions for these problems Notices Next Meeting - APRIL 8, 2003 - T he Butterflies are coming to the Tyler Audubon Society Meeting . The Tyler Audubon Society is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Main Education Building at Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Road, Tyler. Cheryle Beck will conduct a birding class at 6:30 p.m. and will discuss “Spring Migrants -Warblers”. Participants are requested to bring their field guide. Butterflies will be the subject of the evening. Ms. Jean Hedger found herself in an empty nest when her five children were no longer occupying her every spare moment, when she was not busy with her nursing career. Jean became interested in butterflies and started raising them. When two of her children married last year she released butterflies as part of the ceremony. There was a lot of interest and excitement at that event and she now keeps butterflies available for school life science projects, weddings, and other celebrations. She has seen the joy and excitement that butterflies have brought to all ages and has started providing observatory containers with a butterfly for patients in the hospital where she works, and in nursing homes.

var site="s10baldeagle" T he bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) , our national bird , is the only eagle unique to North America. The bald eagle's scientific name signifies a sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with a white (leukos) head. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white," not hairless. The bald eagle is found over most of North America, from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico. About half of the world's 70,000 bald eagles live in Alaska. Combined with British Columbia's population of about 20,000, the northwest coast of North America is by far their greatest stronghold. They flourish here in part because the salmon. Dead or dying fish are an important food source for all bald eagles.
T he U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was proposing that the bald eagle be declared fully recovered by July 2000, but the decision was delayed until they figure out how they will manage the species once it is taken off the list. Even if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removes the bald eagle from the "threatened" species list, it will still be protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act . The Bald Eagle Protection Act prohibits the take, transport, sale, barter, trade, import and export, and possession of eagles, making it illegal for anyone to collect eagles and eagle parts, nests, or eggs without a permit. Possession of a feather or other body part, is a felony with a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment, although federally recognized Native Americans are able to possess these emblems which are traditional in their culture.
