Code Of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
Everyone working in the Biology Department is exposed to chemicals. Some of those chemicals are potentially very harmful but only if the dose received is significant. Fortunately because of the nature of work in our department, nobody need be exposed to harmful amounts of any chemical. Attention to personal protection and hygiene combined with good laboratory technique should ensure that all work can be conducted without significant risk. This code of practice aims to provide advice on general steps necessary to handle and control exposure to chemicals. This code represents the minimum required for work in a general laboratory and would be sufficient for most work using category A chemicals, many category B chemicals and some category C chemicals. Each individual laboratory should have its own protocols for handling specific category C chemicals which may need special handling precautions. All laboratories using category D chemicals must have a written protocol for the use each category D chemical. Storage and Transport
  • Buy only the minimum quantity of the chemical you need, even if a chemical seems cheap.

The energetics lab provides the ability to measure the energy content of biological samples as small as 25 milligrams. Energetics is an important technique in understanding marine systems, particularly in understanding how predator- prey relationships may constrain or alter populations. The technique has been used in the North Pacific in studies of herring population dynamics, returns to salmon fisheries, seabird studies, killer whale - Steller sea lion interactions, and many more. Faculty at Alaska Pacific University are using the technique to study habitat selection of the Giant Pacific Octopus.
Equipment includes a Parr Semimicro Bomb calorimeter, pellet press, drying oven, a -40 C freezer, and scales.

Sterilizing with Sound: Acoustic Technique Could Disinfect Medical Instruments Without Heat or Harsh Chemicals
An acoustic phenomenon previously studied for its effects on submarines could be the basis for an improved disinfection technique able to rapidly kill microorganisms on medical instruments without high temperatures or harsh chemicals.
Ken Cunefare holds test chamber used to demonstrate the ability of enhanced transient cavitation to kill bacterial spores. The technique could provide an alternative to existing heat and chemical treatments for disinfecting medical equipment. Georgia Tech Photo: Gary Meek 300 dpi JPG version Preliminary studies by scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University showed the technique killed more than 90 percent of bacteria in a test vial that also contained a mild solution of isopropyl alcohol. Results of the work were presented December 5 at the First Pan-American/Iberian Meeting on Acoustics in Cancun, Mexico.

by Kathleen M. Haywood, Catherine F. Lewis (Contributor) I'm a newcomer to the sport of archery. I could not have selected a better book to start with. I read the book completely before buying my bow and other gear. This helped immensely in knowing somewhat what I needed and wanted. The lesson plans and activities are easy to understand and very useful. I refer back to the book often. I highly recommend this book.

Never before have such detailed instructions been available for the home craftsman, with information on how to make fine bows and arrows from natural materials. The authors thoroughly explain every facet of the process, from choosing wood to applying finishes, making constructio

To Netnews Homepage Previous Next Index ... Table of Contents From Intellect to Intuition - Chapter Eight - The Universality of Meditation CHAPTER EIGHT The Universality of Meditation "To every man there openeth
A Way, and Ways, and a Way.
And the High Soul climbs the High Way
And the Low Soul gropes the Low;
And in between, on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.
But to every man there openeth
A High Way and a Low,
And every man decideth
The Way his Soul should go." John Oxenham We found that these illuminated men, right down the ages, testify to the same truth, and that they claim for this universal method that it brings them certain results that might be enumerated as follows: [178] First: They achieve direct experience of divine realities, of transcendental truths and of the supernatural world. These appear, when contacted, to be as much a natural process and as vitally a part of the evolutionary development as are any of the processes to which the sciences of biology, of physics or of chemistry bear witness. Just as these three great sciences are occult to, and practically unattainable by, the average grade school student, so the higher metaphysics is occult and unattainable, even to the academician who lacks the needed open-mindedness, the definite training and the equipment. Second: Another development is the unveiling of the Self. Through the mental and spiritual education which advanced meditation practices confer, the problem of the psychologists as to the nature of the Self, the soul, the psyche, is solved, and the word can be resolved back into its original meaning - Psyche, the name of the soul. The process has beep that of a gradual unveiling, and of a sequential approach nearer and nearer to the soul. The psyche emerges in its true being.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR): A Simple Technique that Helped Revolutionize Molecular Biology
Friday, November 22, 2002, 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, November 23, 2002, 8:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. This two-day workshop is designed for teachers who have some basic, background understanding of the structure and function of DNA. The PCR concepts and laboratory experiments that will be presented are most applicable to high school Biology, AP Biology and Biotechnology classes. However, middle school teachers may glean useful information and experience from this workshop as well. This workshop will be offered in partnership with Fotodyne Incorporated and will demonstrate the use of Fotodyne equipment, which can then be borrowed by teachers to use in their classrooms. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) provides a quick method of amplifying (duplicating) sections of DNA from just a few molecules of DNA. This technique is the basis for most of the DNA fingerprinting done today in forensics and paternity cases, as well as the confirming technique for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other viral testing. During the lecture sessions of this workshop, participants will learn about the principles and applications of PCR and gel electrophoresis. In the laboratory sessions, you will set up several PCR reactions, using different conditions for various applications, and analyze the results on different types of gels.

The Recombinant DNA/Protein Resource Facility
Purpose:
The purpose of the Recombinant DNA/Protein Resource Facility is simply to facilitate and stimulate research by OSU scientists into the molecular bases of life processes. Knowledge gained by such research will be used to improve humankind and its environment. The Recombinant DNA/Protein Resource Facility provides the latest technologies relating to molecular biology and encourages and supports the use of these technologies by OSU scientists. One of the ways in which research institution have carried out these purposes is to assemble the expensive, sophisticated instrumentation required to carry out these goals (i.e. automated DNA synthesis and sequencing, automated peptide synthesis and protein sequencing) into a centralized facility that has the technical expertise to properly operate and maintain the instrumentation.
Function:
The Core facility assumes a number of important functions through providing services, access to equipment, training, and access to resources pertinent to molecular biology:
1. Services:

© by the Utah State Office of Education. Biotechnology Mark Dickson (Dixie High School) INTRODUCTION Advances in the understanding and manipulation of proteins and DNA have revolutionized the field of biology. Consequently, the study of biotechnology is essential to understanding the changes taking place in the health professions, agricultural industries, law enforcement and environmental sciences. The nearly completed Human Genome Project and related research is leading new, safer drugs and the possible elimination of genetic disease. New crops and livestock are being developed that produce more with less resources and are disease and pest resistant. DNA fingerprinting is leading to better law enforcement and solving criminal cases that were previously unsolvable. Genetic manipulation may save endangered species or bring back extinct species and is increasingly becoming a part of managing the limited resources of the biosphere. All of these exciting advances and possible solutions to problems created by the human population will change our society, making it necessary for all students to be familiar with the associated theory, techniques and issues.
