    Directory Ecological Agriculture Grant Guidelines "When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." John Muir Wildness, that ideal state in which the processes of Nature function fully and unfettered, must be, in our minds and on the land, a condition ever present, ever vibrant, ever cared for. Evolution in its four billion years of unfolding has been entirely a process and product of wildness. Through wildness we come to understand the marvelous complexity, mystery, diversity, beauty, and stability of the full world in which we live. To that end, to restore the evolutionary process, our foundation places its highest priority on saving wild Nature. "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness." John Muir The surest way to preserve wildness is to protect wilderness. Though the traditional North American models of parks and wilderness areas may not work equally well in all parts of the world, the growing discipline of conservation biology has clearly shown that only large wild areas free of roads and other industrial intrusions wilderness will sustain the full range of biological diversity, the full spectrum of wildness. FDE supports efforts to preserve and restore wilderness throughout the Americas, with the aim of returning these lands to a condition dominated by wildness.

    CHRISTIAN ECOLOGY LINK BIO-DIVERSITY "Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
    let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
    Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
    Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy" (Ps. 96:11-13).
    Bio-diversity simply means the variety of life on earth. ' As the psalmists so eloquently sang, God's glory is to be found in the whole of the vast order of the universe and in the miraculous detail of nature in all its forms', said the Archbishop of Canterbury in July 1997. Out of the 5 to 15 million species of living organisms which live on earth only 1.75 million have been identified. Many will be small and not yet described by specialists, but provide essential food or support for more familiar forms of life. Humans and other animals, plants, fungi and micro-organisms depend on each other. It is estimated that between 1% and 10% of the world's species could become extinct in the next 25 years, mostly as a result of human activities. This rate of extinction is 50 to 100 times the average expected natural rate of extinction and in some areas may rise to 1,000 to 10,000 times that rate due to habitat loss. Overleaf are a few examples of bio-diversity loss, some reflections on why this matters to Christians and what each of us can do to help.

Short for biological diversity, biodiversity means a variety of living things. If the Earth's ecosystems are to remain healthy, they require many different kinds (species) of plants and animals. Every living organism has a role to play in our environment. Although we depend on and use many wild species, our knowledge of the natural world is very limited. We have yet to discover, name and understand the vast majority of the species on Earth. Worldwide, only 1.4 million species have been named, yet it is estimated that there are somewhere between 20 and 100 million species overall. In the Yukon, we are not yet on the downward spiral of rapid loss of species and biological diversity experienced throughout the world. Yukon Biodiversity Awareness Month (YBAM): April Many Yukoners recognize the importance of maintaining biodiversity both here and throughout the globe. They are working hard to ensure habitats are suitable for the widest variety of species.

    Themes
    Projects Staff The primary objective is to gain understanding of biodiversity and population biology of plants as components of agricultural systems through molecular genetic and ecological studies, statistical analysis and theoretical modelling of underlying processes. Secondary objectives embraced within this goal are: (i) to determine the most effective ways of utilising knowledge on diversity and ecological dynamics for improved utilisation and management of crop genetic resources and farmland flora and; (ii) to assess the role and contribution of genetic diversity to ecological stability and/or resilience of species within the agricultural system. The Biodiversity Crisis: Losing What Counts

    by Michael J Novacek (Introduction), American Museum of Natural History, Ellen V. Futter. The Biodiversity Crisis Conservation of Exploited Species
    edited by John D. Reynolds, Georgina M. Mace, and Kent H. Redford. "This book brings together international experts to examine interactions between the biology of wildlife and the divergent goals of people involved in hunting, fishing, gathering, and culling wildlife. Reviews of theory show how sustainable exploitation is tied to the study of population dynamics, with direct links to reproductive rates, life histories, behavior, and ecology. As such theory is rarely put into practice to achieve sustainable use and effective conservation, Conservation of Exploited Species explores the many reasons for this failure and considers remedies to tackle them." Ecosystem Management: Applications for Sustainable Forest and Wildlife Resources
    by Mark Boyce (Editor), Alan Haney (Editor). "Until recently, natural resource management of such commodities as timber and wildlife was driven largely by the desire to exploit these resources. During the past three decades, however, ecologists have warned that this approach to natural resource management could have unforeseen consequences because it ignored how ecosystems function within the landscape. . . . [The] experts agree that management practices must be sustainable: that production of commodities, such amenities as recreation and aesthetics, and biodiversity must not be allowed to decline over time."
