Staff Associates Students Research ... Publications The Centre for Biodiversity and Ecology Research was established in 1999 by the Department of Biological Sciences under the School of Science and Technology at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. Its aim is to facilitate an integrated approach to research in to biodiversity and ecology, to provide consultancy and advocacy services, and to educate. The director of the centre is Associate Professor Bruce Clarkson . An advisory committee of 5 members comments on policy issues. We are pleased to welcome Professor David Hamilton and his family to Hamilton. David has taken up the Environment Bay of Plenty Lakes Chair. A Ph.D. Scholarship is available to study "Nitrogen dynamics in the Rotorua Lakes". The scholarship is for $15,000 p.a. and payment of student fees. Click here for details.

Ecology, habitat, species extinction, biodiversity? Are these important?
Actually, as a practical matter, almost everybody ignores these fundamentals. It really doesn't seem to matter what you say about ecology if you aren't a scientist. If you are a scientist you're so far out of it that nobody listens either. Those pesky scientists have spent the last century and more explaining in exquisite detail. But ecologists have talked to themselves and the few concerned individuals who've taken a sincere interest have talked to themselves as well. On November 18, 1992, the Union of Concerned Scientists, representing over 1,500 of the world's leading scientists (including 99 Nobel laureates) issued an "Urgent Warning to Humanity," that implored all peoples of the world to halt the accelerating damage to Mother Earth's life support systems. The scientists warned us that, "we may have as little as ten years to avert the environmental disasters that now confront us." "The human world is beyond its limits. The present way of doing things is unsustainable. The future, to be viable at all, must be one drawing back, easing down, healing." If correction is not made, a collapse is certain "within the lifetimes of many who are alive today."

ecology, biodiversity and mapping of the coastal ecosystem the ecology, fishery and population dynamics of commercially important marine invertebrates interactions and anthropogenic impacts on the ecosystem (fisheries, aquaculture and coastal developments) technological improvement of environmental monitoring methods and information systems to support decision making for integrated management of the coastal zone
Overview The department carries out basic and applied research using an integrated approach to the study of ecosystems. This approach involves a wide range of disciplines including chemistry, physics, geology, biology and statistics, relating fauna to environment and vice versa, both within the seabed and the overlying waters. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of modern methodologies and underwater technologies, using equipment such as towed video sled, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), sediment water interface camera, side scan sonar and bottom discrimination sonar.
The department participates in activities of the European Topic Centre for the marine coastal environment of the European Environment Agency and has been involved as partner or coordinator in numerous national and international projects concerning marine science and technology.

Biodiversity and Mathematical Ecology
Professor Hugh Possingham We are a diverse group with interests ranging from the social sciences, ecological theory, fisheries and pest management to applied mathematics and simulation modelling. We are bound by a passion for conservation, quantitative and theoretical ecology, and mathematical tools for population management. We are currently funded by three Large ARC grants, two Large SPIRT grants (with Western Mining Ltd and Environment Australia ) and various contracts. The group is spatially disconnected across the campuses of The University of Adelaide, interstate and internationally, so we do much of our work by Email. Every week we try to meet at the Waite campus as PHLEM - the P ossingham ... odelling . Fieldwork has been conducted since 1986 within a 100 km. radius of Pattani in southern Thailand in collaboration with ecologist Nukul Ruttanadakul, botanist Samporn Juntadach, and other colleagues in the Biology Section of Prince of Songkla University. Description Spiritual Ecology: Buddha Statue at park near Narathiwat Nukul Ruttanadakul and Poranee Natadecha-Sponsel interviewing a monk about some 50 medicinal plants he maintains in his temple Sacred Places: One component of spiritual ecology is sacred places which range along several continua (natural to anthropogenic, biophysical to sociocultural, prehistoric to recent, etc.). These places are special because of some extraordinary attributes that stimulate feelings of power, mystery, awe, transcendence, peace, and healing. The same sacred place may be recognized as special by individuals from very different cultures, religions, histories, and ecologies, although they may interpret it quite differently. Many sacred places, particularly in nature, may promote environmental and biodiversity conservation, since local communities recognize them as special and prescribe certain behaviors in relation to them.

Structural biology and proteomics Biotechnology Fish Biology Plant growth and development ... Biodiversity and ecology Biodiversity and Ecology Southeast is a mega-biodiversity regions of our planet, therefore, the biodiversity research is very critical in this region especially with accelerating habitat loss. The biodiversity program in the Department is centred on the newly formed Raffles Museum for Biodiversity Research (RMBR), a faculty research centre. The current research program of the RMBR is broad-based and can be divided into the following seven broad components: 1) basic taxonomy and systematics, 2) phylogeny and biogeography, 3) molecular systematics, 4) community ecology, 5) ethology, 6) conservation biology, and 7) functional morphology. Taxonomy and systematics Phylogeny and biogeography Molecular systematics This is a fast growing area in biodiversity research, and its primary strength is its ability to strongly complement classical approaches to evolutionary biology, biogeography, taxonomy and ecology. The ability of molecular tools to further more conventional research is important to develop. Currently, the work done in the department in this field is being developed further.
